Ubuntu Installation :: Very Slow Apt Network Connection - Can't Narrow Down

Mar 10, 2010

It may have something to do with my recent installation and removal of tor, but I can't narrow down when exactly it began. I'm getting no better than about 5000B/s download rates for apt. This means just a download of the package list takes a good 5 minutes. Other networking seems to run fine, but synaptic and apt are crawling.

CentOS 5 :: Booting Slow With No Network Connection

Ever since the upgrade to CentOS 5.4 the system boots extremely slow and x-windows is virtually unusable unless the machine is connected to a network. It hangs at netstat, cups, httpd during the boot process. I utilize the operating system to create Asterisk servers and sometimes they are not connected to a network ever.

OpenSUSE Network :: Internet Connection Slow In Certain Applications?

May 17, 2011

I have recently moved countries and have finally got my internet connected today after a lengthy wait. I have a pretty fast connection - it's a fibre connection at approx 100Mbps Between my onu (modem) & computer (Lenovo SL510) I have a cisco wrt120N wireless router. I'm using Opensuse 11.3 (also dual boot with Win7)

My problem is . . . When I enter url in firefox (4) I get the message "looking up www. . ." for approx 5 to 15 seconds before anything starts to load. I also have the same behaviour in konqueror, firefox and yast software manager.

If I use Google Chrome the pages load instantly. Even never before visited pages.

A typical webpage such as Stuff.co.nz - Latest New Zealand News & World News, Sports News & NZ Weather Forecasts takes approx 20 to thirty secs to load in firefox and 3 seconds in Chrome. I can see the same behaviour always whether Chrome used first or firefox used first - so cache does not appear to be the issue.

If I boot into Win7 - websites load instantly there also.

I have updated to the latest wireless drivers for my system - but the behaviour is also evident if I attach a lan cable.

Here is a little info

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 60:EB:69:AE:C6:28
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Wifi - But Fast Connection On Network Cable

Jan 22, 2011

I have a strange problem that I cannot diagnose -- slow wifi. About two or three weeks ago, I noticed that my wifi began to slow down dramatically. The problem is the same on my ubuntu laptop and my ipad. But when I connect directly to the router with a network cable, my connection is fine. So it is definitely a problem with the wifi signal itself.

What I have done so far:
(1) I checked all of the MAC addresses connected to my wifi. I identified my tivo box, laptop, and ipad. Nothing else.

(2) I used [I]wifi analyzer[I] on my android phone and selected an unused wifi channel (channel 8).

(3) I changed the username/password on my wifi signal. I also changed the password for my router's admin privileges.

(4) I restarted my router and computer.
None of this helped.

I am using a Netgear WGR614 wireless router.

OpenSUSE Network :: Adsl Modem Acting As A Bridge To My Router Setup - Connection - Internet Went Slow ?

Jun 19, 2011

I have an adsl modem acting as a bridge to my router my setup was working well for more than year now , but then the internet went slow . I set the modem back to PPPoE the problem was with the DNS server of the ISP so using ifup i set the dns t 8.8.8.8 (google) the connection is back , but when i set the modem back as a bridge slow internet does the router know that my dns is 8.8.8.8 or i should set the dns on the router ? I can't see an option to set the dns on the router ( i just enter my username and password from the isp to use PPPoE mode ) by the way i called the isp support they kept telling me to restart , i told them i did but i never restarted my pc . I'm sure if i tell them i'm running linux they will blame the os !

Ubuntu :: Narrow The Cause Down And Fix It?

May 14, 2010

I just installed Lucid (and I am liking it very much). I want to use the Radiance theme, but it seems that something a bit goofy is going on. The drop-down menu has a dark background with a dark text. So close that it is almost unreadable. If I change the font color to a lighter one, then it seems too light in the windows. I know the theme isn't supposed to have a dark menu, so I was wondering what might have caused it to show up dark on my desktop. How could I narrow the cause down and fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Noticed That The Connection Flashed Orange For A Bit And Then Returned To Simply Flashing Slow?

Apr 6, 2011

I just did a new install on a pc chips p23g motherboard based machine. This motherboard has a built in 10/100 connector. When installing I noticed that the connection flashed orange for a bit and then returned to simply flashing slow. Its my understanding that if you have a green steady light and a flashing orange then there IS a connect. If this is true then, for some reason the install didn't find it or didn't install a driver for it. I installed 2 times just to make sure.Oh, when installing, off the dvd (10.4) it said there was a problem but it would give me a desktop so that I could figure it out.I am clueless. There was a box to install and that is what I have been using. Obviously, I am missing something here

Ubuntu :: Random Crackling Sound / Narrow It Down?

Oct 10, 2010

I use a Creative Fata1ity USB Headset for playing games. I use a VOIP Client called Mangler for ventrilo. I play WoW via WINE.

I am not sure what is causing it, but the sound quality will be amazing and then randomly go to this crackling, static, ping, underwater sound for people in Mangler and for the WoW sound.

What I do is go system > preferences > sound and then turn the sound to off and then back to my setting and it is fixed. It will then come back randomly. It could be 5 minutes or an hour.

Anyone have any clue what this could be or how to narrow it down. Makes raiding kind of hard when I have to fix my sound randomly while healing a boss fight.

It did this on 10.04 and then on 10.10

Ubuntu Installation :: No Wireless Network Connection?

Sep 6, 2010

I have been uninstalling, reinstalling, .... for about the past 14 hours and finally I realize I need help. First, I am trying to install the latest Ubuntu 10.04.1 (64-bit) on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion).

I did have 10.04 running for a few months on this laptop but when I recently upgraded to ver. .... 32-24 things started to go wrong. Suddenly, I could no longer even bootup Ubuntu ...32-24. But, I was able to use ...32-23 or ...32-21 which were also on my machine. Then in trying to fix ...32-24 all my installed versions of Ubuntu 10.04 became unbootable. I tried many suggestions (see my postings on this yesterday and today on the Ubuntu forum -- General help) .

I realized that this was hopeless after many attempts. I could not bootup, even from my bootable Ubuntu CD. I then decided to just begin from scratch and install the latest downloadable Ubuntu --- I started with this early this morning. This went rather smooth; but, no matter how many reinstallations I did, I could never make a wireless connection to the network. Note, the same wireless hardware and settings were used as in the previous working versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 (on the same machine) --- I have not made any hardware changes.

I am sending this message from my desktop PC which has Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) and again, I have carefully checked and verified that the setting for my wireless connection to the internet are identical for both (this desktop and my laptop). However, I am still unable to make a wireless network connection on my laptop!

What can I do to get my wireless network working on my laptop with the latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1? It could be that this latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1 does not have the necessary drivers/software for the wireless network. But, it was ok in the previous downloadable --- I had been using it for a couple of months with no problems at all. Is it possible to reinstall 10.04 vers. ...32-23 rather that 10.04.1 vers. ...32-24? I could not find this on the Web.

Debian Installation :: ALX 10a1 Installation Without Network Connection

Oct 28, 2014

Currently my new server pc (Mobo - ASRock H97M-ITX/AC) is not connecting to the network and it seems to be due to the network card alx drivers. I have downloaded the compat drivers and backports associated with the issue in other posts and on other forums but haven't been able to get it running.

When I install a usb drive of any type to try and transfer the drivers over I get the messages "443.057769 sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write though" & "443.057769 sd 7:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page found".

I have been looking around these forums and google for the past week or so and have tried re-installing and alternative hardware etc. with no luck.
