I really want Python 2.6, which is not part of the standard Hardy packages. I just tried installing the Python 2.6 Linux distro direct from python.org. While I didn't see any error messages during the installation, I'm still defaulting to Python 2.5, and 2.6 installed to a different folder than 2.5.
A secondary wish: I would also like GROMACS 4.0 instead of 3.3. Again, Karmic has it as standard, Hardy doesn't.
I'm running dual hard drives in a software RAID1 configuration. My system is Linux only, so I have no Windoze compatibility issues to worry about.
Still, I've gathered that upgrading in the presence of RAID is different, and more problematic, than a standard upgrade.

I did an upgrade over the internet and on rebooting after it had completed there was no internet connection. I wired in an ethernet cable and although I can access the router and ping another machine on the network, there is no internet connection.

I am trying to update two 64-bit PCs from SuSE 11.1 to 11.2. Both are having the same problem: On the "Installation Settings" screen, under "Packages" is a message: "Cannot solve all conflicts. Manual intervention is required" If I click on "Packages" a dialog box opens with this message:

Recently I upgraded from my long outdated Kubuntu 6.06 dapper installation to the new LTS, 8.04 hardy. I need to install some packages, but it fails because I previously installed gnome-shell testing, and now have the ricotz ppa packages conflicting with the default packages. See error below.

How do I remove these packages and re-install the default ones, without risking damage to my system?
UPDATE: I have now tried to remove this packages using ppa-purge and the new ubuntu tweaks, but for the life of me I cannot get rid of them.

Short version: I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and need downgrade ASAP from Firefox 3.6 back down to Firefox 3.0. In Synaptic, the firefox-3.0 package cleverly now shows up as version 3.6. How can I downgrade? I'm open to anything. Long version:
I just did a security update on my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) installation. It upgraded Firefox from 3.0.x (x=19, I think) to 3.6.x. This broke an absolutely critical plugin for me, pretty much the one and only plugin I care about, and one that doesn't support Firefox beyond 3.0. More on the plugin below if you care.
But for now I MUST downgrade immediately to Firefox 3.0.x. I realize that The Powers That Be probably forced us to upgrade to 3.6 for a reason (i.e. 3.0 isn't supported anymore, or something like that) but I really can't deal with a 3.0-3.6 sea change right now. I need to get the FF install back down to 3.0 pronto. My work is piling up fast.
If there's no way to do it within the carefully security-controlled world of officially-supported 8.04 LTS, I'm open to steps that will force it. I just need my FF 3.0 to work for a couple more months.
Related question: If I downgrade, what are the chances that FF 3.0 will be able to parse my (carefully crafted) profile, now that the newer 3.6 has gone in there and presumably mucked it up with 3.6-specific things? I can extract the 3.0 profile file(s) from a backup if needed (a snapshot was taken just before the security upgrade!) I'm not going to say what the plugin is, but it's critical to me. I literally can do virtually nothing without it. I will find a replacement for it (one that supports 3.6+) when I tackle the OS upgrade, but NOT NOW
Sidebar 2: I know 8.04 is a little old, but I don't have the time right now to deal with upgrading. It's a massive undertaking for me to do that, and I plan on doing it in the fall (read: not now!) As part of that OS upgrade (wipe and reinstall, actually), THAT is when I would tackle migrating to a newer version of Firefox, including figuring out all the preference adjustments to get it to my liking and, most importantly, get my critical plugin to work. And that's also when I would upgrade to FF 3.6 (or whatever) on ALL of my machines. I have several computers (Linux and Windows), and I keep them all at the same identical level of Firefox, with the same prefs, and that same critical plugin, so I have the same browsing experience and feature set no matter which computer I'm at.
Sidebar 3: While I'd love to sanctimoniously wag my finger at Ubuntu for doing this Terrible Thing to us users, I imagine there were good reasons for it and perhaps was even some debate about forcing a 3.0 -> 3.6 update. I'd love to see that debate, if someone can point me to it (e.g. a bug discussion thread on launchpad).

I've had issues with the later versions of Ubuntu, so in an effort to road-test Firefox 3.5 on Hardy I'd like to change my Karmic/Hardy dual boot to a Hardy/Hardy dual boot, and follow the instructions in [URL] to put the Mozilla build of 3.5 on the new installation.
I can't see any reason why a Hardy/Hardy dual-boot shouldn't work, but does anyone know of any issues with this I might not be aware of?

when my computer was upgrading the packages it crashed with like 30 seconds left. On the reboot, the login screen was blue and it didn't have any accounts listed, I had to click other and sign in. when I hit log in, it freezes at that screen, the desktop environment doesnt launch. I have to click alt + ctrl + del in order to log out.
I've tried going into system recovery, cleaning, repairing packages, and changing graphics dosnt work. Any ideas what I can do, I've tried all kinds of apt-get commands from the root terminal in recovery and dkpg commands too. Additional info: My computer has been freezing recently and I don't know what was causing it.

That sounds simple except that day-to-day, I don't run a stock Slackware kernel. I compile and run my own and always have. As I look back on my history with Slackware, I don't think I've ever upgraded kernel packages once I got a system up and running. When there's been big changes (2.4 to 2.6, for example), I've done a full re-install.
Most recently when I made the jump to 64bit, I did a full install using the huge.s kernel and once everything worked, I downloaded the current source from kernel.org and was on my way. I haven't booted huge.s since that day.
I do, of course, know how to upgrade my own custom kernel, but I like having huge.s installed as a backup. If I upgrade gcc/glibc, compile a new custom kernel and update lilo.conf/fstab without upgrading huge.s, then I will be left with only one working kernel.
So, my question is: is it simply a matter of running upgradepkg on the 6 kernel packages (headers, modules, firmware, generic, huge and source)? or is there more to it than that..ie, what about the system maps and symlinks in /boot?

I just performed a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my flash drive, allocating a 6.5 GB persistence file. Of course, the first thing I did after booting from it was to run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. After a lengthy install process, I was eventually notified that several packages failed to upgrade. I rebooted and tried again, still to no avail. Now, whenever I install a new package or attempt to upgrade with apt-get, I receive the following or a simmilar output:

I heen been running Fedora F11 for a while now. I had been over to the RPMFusion website and enabled some repos for this release.
However, when checking for software updates, the latest release of KDE is always stuck at 4.2.2. Is there a way or a repo that I need give me something more up to date?
Is it because F11 is in freeze that there's been no update to KDE? Currently, the latest stable release of KDE is 4.2.4.

Fedora 11 was being run on a Toshiba Satellite Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.1 with 180 gig hard drive and 3 gigs of RAM. The laptop is encrypted, using Fedora's encryption option when installing 11. Just finished upgrading using the upgrading DVD. Fedora boots and runs fine, when update manager is accessed it says 338 updates available. When updating is attempted there is one unavailable package after another. Have attempted to break the updates down into manageable sections to no avail. There is no repository manager (that can be located). Where to from here?

I have a "not good" habit: I'd love to upgrade whatever suggested by Ubuntu upgrading center every morning.
However, after upgrading some packages for today, my computer won't be able to automatically mount external harddrives, including file systems ext4 and ntfs.
My question is:
1) How can I check what packages have been upgraded just within today?
2) How to make my Ubuntu be able to automatically mount external hard drives whenever I plug in a harddrive as before?

I had a broken URL in my /etc/apt/sources.list file, apparently because the debian-multimedia.org site had some kind of server issue and they had to rebuild the site from the ground up. They must have changed their directory structure, because I began getting 404 Errors when upgrading packages. I eventually fixed the URL last week after it had been broken for three months, then I upgraded and rebooted. After that, sound stopped working, even system sounds. My speakers work, because I plugged them into another machine and they worked. I eventually discovered that the master volume was set to "mute", and so was the master volume in the alsamixer. However, even after changing it to 100% for both, sound still doesn't work. I even made sure to issue a "alsactl -store" command toeep the settings there after a reboot. I removed and reinstalled all the alsa and pulse audio packages, made sure that the emu10k1 driver was installed for my Soundblaster Audigy card, and made sure everything was unmuted. I have also tried a million other things that I've found on Google, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed 64-bit Fedora 12, and everything was working fine. I upgraded a bunch of packages (including, but not limited to, X and Gnome) via yum, and now I'm unable to access virtual consoles. X works fine, but Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc. leads me to a black screen.
How do I get my virtual consoles back?

I upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 yesterday, and now I have no bookmarks, no addons, and my preferences are reset.I figured I just had to reinstall all of the addons, but it's not letting me. It lets me download the addons, but as soon as I click "install addon" from the box that pops up, it goes to the addons dialog.However, it doesn't say "You must restart firefox to complete the installation" like it usually does, and there is no indication that I have installed anything at all. I've tried many times with many different addons, and it doesn't let me install any of them. Is anyone else having this issue?
