Getting a new computer today, as my usuall box is running karmic, will there be any problems?
Can i just take out, my drive with / and home on it, put it in and away we go or what? also what backup s/w is there to backup onto a hard disk.
ie existing root -> new 240gb root
After I upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, I haven't been able to update my version further and also running apt-get shows error... Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

I just upgraded to Karmic and since then, mouse and sound on my laptop stop working. I fixed the touchpad problem but no sound yet.
My laptop is a Presario CQ60.

I have a dedicated server running Ubuntu-server Jaunty. As you know, this OS no longer has security updates. I'm trying to upgrade it to the latest LTS (Lucid) but first thing's first: I'm having trouble upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic.
Here's the problem. I get the following when I try do-release-upgrade:

force an upgrade to Karmic instead of Lucid? (And no, sadly, re-installing is not an option as this is a server with no direct physical access)
I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 then discovered that, in openoffice.org-writer, the text in the UI is gone. It's strange because the text to be edited is still there. So maybe it's a font or rendering problem but I suspect something related to the window manager is going wrong. I have checked and re-installed openoffice but I haven't been able to fix this so far.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Core 2 Duo iMac that I had set up for triple boot using Fedora Core (probably FC8 )and GRUB, Windows XP Pro, and Mac OS X v10.5. Some time ago, I had to blow out and reinstall my Windows installation because it had developed errors, but this also blew out my GRUB, leaving the Fedora install non-bootable. Since I never really used FC on this machine much, I didn't worry.
Lately, I've acquired an hp Mini 110, on which I'm running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), and I'd like to upgrade my FC partition on the iMac to Karmic, but when I run the installer, it won't let me use all of the existing Linux partition, instead wanting to resize it to accommodate both FC and Ubuntu.
How do I make the installer simply replace FC with Karmic, using the entire existing partition? I'm sure earlier versions of Linux that I've used had a simple "erase all Linux partitions and install" option, and the "Manual" option doesn't appear to read the existing partition information (I was too afraid to go any further).
I ended up quitting the installer, which put me into the Live CD environment, where I used the File Browser to "Format..." the Linux partition, but when I went back to the installer, I ran into the same problem, and it didn't seem to matter if I unmounted the existing partitions or not.
I recently got a Dell Netbook Mini10v with Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled. It does not give the option to upgrade using the normal features in the GUI (as far as I can tell) how should I go about upgrading my system to 9.10?

I kept on forgetting to upgrade my system when a new version of Ubuntu came out and now I am considerably behind. I want to upgrade to Karmic, but I can't find out how to do it without upgrading to Impala, then Jaunty, then Karmic. Is there a possible way I can avoid upgrading three times and only do it once?

NOTE: I haven't updated for quite some time. I may have gotten one or two updates for karmic but that was it. Just thought it might be important....
NOTE: Also not sure if this is important, but karmic installed and did some funny stuff to itself. My desktop no longer exists. It just isn't there. Also, when I try to turn of my computer it gets all kinds of errors and eventually I have to just pull the plug....something about a dev loop0 right after is says its deactivating swap...
I really want Python 2.6, which is not part of the standard Hardy packages. I just tried installing the Python 2.6 Linux distro direct from python.org. While I didn't see any error messages during the installation, I'm still defaulting to Python 2.5, and 2.6 installed to a different folder than 2.5.
A secondary wish: I would also like GROMACS 4.0 instead of 3.3. Again, Karmic has it as standard, Hardy doesn't.
I'm running dual hard drives in a software RAID1 configuration. My system is Linux only, so I have no Windoze compatibility issues to worry about.
Still, I've gathered that upgrading in the presence of RAID is different, and more problematic, than a standard upgrade.
I did an upgrade over the internet and on rebooting after it had completed there was no internet connection. I wired in an ethernet cable and although I can access the router and ping another machine on the network, there is no internet connection.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Lucid (clean install after several attempts at upgrading from Karmic failed), and I have an Intel 8xx video card. I was able to get Lucid installed by adding "xforcevesa" into the command line at startup. Now I would like to try changing my computer away from Vesa and seeing if I can try to get the i915 driver working.
That being said, I cannot figure out where to go to change my kernel boot configurations. Every tutorial I've found refers me to /boot/grub/menu.lst which I cannot find. Ever since I moved from Karmic to Lucid, I've regretted it as it seems like all the How-To documentation is no longer valid, everything has been changed and moved around.
I don't know why it is dumping me onto Vesa, or why my stupid driver was blacklisted; everything was working fine under Hardy, Jaunty, and Karmic. Why problems now? Does anyone know how I can get into my boot setings and replace "xforcevesa" with something that will make the intel driver work?

I seem to be having problems with karmic and perhaps GRUB2 sometimes when the computer boots after the GRUB2 screen I get a flashing cursor (underscore) and nothing happens. I end up having to hard reset. other times I'm using karmic and everything seems ok and then it suddenly freezes. I haven't been able to find a reason. Memtest seems ok too. which log file is likely to show me where things went wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic, but once I loaded Karmic and rebooted, my computer will not complete the boot up sequence and go into any desktop. It starts the initial boot sequence with the mouse appearing and then goes to the screen that looks like it has an atom cloud. After that, the screen goes black and the mouse-arrow turns into that white rotating wheel, but it stays that way. It never actually goes into any type of operation! I tried to go from the command line and find Lucid to overlay it on Karmic and hopefully solve the problem. It just looks like to me that several of the packages I downloaded through my upgrade manager were corrupted. My computer doesn't even seem to be acknowledging my password because it gives me an error 32:must be authenticated.

Everything seemed to be working great until I tried to hibernate; now it just goes into a blank screen and the "crescent" hibernation/suspend blinking LED on my Lenovo X200 just keeps blinking, and I had to force-shutdown the computer to turn it off. In short, hibernation doesn't work for me in 10.10. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade.

Every time when I tried to turn off the computer by pressing the 'shut down the computer' button at the upper right corner of the screen and selecting 'Shut down', it will first appear as if it is shutting down normally, but in less than half minute, it stops at a console-like screen with the last few lines of text

My Windows Vista installation won't start after upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I select it on GRUB2, it leaves a blinking cursor on screen. And I tried doing the whole test disk thing and the boot info script. This is what my Results.txt file says

My computer runs Karmic and has quit booting when it is plugged in. I was told it was the AMP needing updated. How do I do that? I do the updates from the update manager, does this mean I missed the AMP update or is it done differently than through the update manager.

The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

I have run PreUpgrade, and the files have downloaded, it's restarted and now it's asking me to do the Manual TCP/IP Configuration. I have only enabled IPV4. The IP I want the computer to have is 192.168.0.5, my router is 192.168.0.1, my subnet is 255.255.255.0 I don't know what the Name server is for. Do I need to put the above into into any of the fields above? I've tried a few times but with no luck.
I've been having problems with Dolphin hanging on me and I found out that the problem is due to something with dbus 1.2x. So I downloaded the source for dbus 1.3.1 and proceeded to update dbus by incrementally uninstalling and installing all of the packages it requires. Today I noticed that both dbus-libs 1.24 and dbus-libs 1.3.1 were installed, so I went to get rid of the 1.2 version so that yum would stop telling me there was a conflict.

I ran that once and restarted, but I think that something happened the first time because rather than it replacing the 1.2x version with 1.3.1 all that was left was 1.2x. So I did the same process as the last time, but after removing dbus-libs I forgot the path to the RPMbuild so I closed konsole and tried to open Dolphin. Well, obviously that's not going to work. So then I, even more stupidly, restarted... And now Fedora won't boot up. How do I reinstall dbus-libs without a bootable Fedora?

Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? Within Windows?

So, my question is what to do? Should I just push the button for 6 seconds, unplug the power cord, or what? It's been like this for 5 hours, I thought it'd go away, but no. Of course, I'll leave it for night, but there has to be a way out. I don't want to reinstall the whole OS, I have lots of programs (and files, actually, too) in there. So, if you know what's the reason and how to deal with it, please tell me. Thank you. I know there are many geniuses in there. I launched updater yesterday, oct.3, and pushed install button only today.
