Ubuntu :: 2.6.31-20 Kernel Won't Load In Grub, It Reverts To Dell Boot Screen?

Apr 14, 2010

I tried to update to 2.6.31-20 kernel but I think I messed it up, because when I click on it in the GRUB it starts to load but then it goes back to the dell boot up screen and I have to use the older one in order to get onto ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

General :: Grub 0.97 CLI To Load Kernel - And Boot On OpenSuse10

Aug 29, 2010

I unfortunately remove "some" softwares on my OpenSuse10 (preinstalled on my laptop, without cd driver) cause I was running out of space on hd. Icons starts to dissappear ...

Then I have only the Grub 0.97 shell that appears and to use to solve the problem... tried to boot kernel, but said that it "must be loaded before boot".

In the Grub 0.97 black window I have two lines :

I press "b", to boot with the First line : kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz ... but the window turns blue and said "all data would be lost", so it shut down the system automatically to avoid this.

I press "e" to edit the command in the boot sequence for the same line, but don't really know what to tell Grub to do.

I must get my important datas back on my hd before "Restore to factory settings" (the last option). Any solution ?

Maybe it is a step on a solution ?

From [url] I downloaded linux kernel 2.6.27.27 on a usb memory stick. Could it be useful ? how to ?

Ubuntu :: Broken Grub On Dual-boot System - Get A Flashing Cursor On A Blank Screen When Try To Load

Nov 2, 2010

I installed Win7 after Ubuntu (10.10). I attempted to reload grub so that I would be able to run them dual boot and now I can't load anything.

I followed the guide here: [url] and went threw it a couple of times now to make sure it wasn't user error.

I am using a live cd from 10.04 because it's the only one I have. Any chance that's why it isn't working properly? I wouldn't think so, but I assume that it's possible.

If that is the case; Any way to solve it without using the live cd? I cannot burn a new disk because I have to boot from disk to use my computer right now.

I just get a flashing cursor on a blank screen when I try to load.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel 2.6.28.1 On 9.10 Grub Kernel Load Error

Jan 4, 2010

Over the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:

error: you need to load the linux kernel first.

I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated And Grub - Load Kernel First

Mar 25, 2010

So I have been using Ubuntu for the past couple of months using Wubi, mainly because my parent's are afraid that I'll screw something up on the computer if I partition the hard drive and stuff like that. And Today I installed the latest updates for 9.10, asked me to restart the computer, and now whenever I try to boot using the latest kernel GRUB keeps telling me to "Load kernel first". The funny thing is that I can boot with the older kernel fine, But I would really like to get the lates updates, which I can't using the older kernel.

Ubuntu :: Pae Kernel - Selection From List Appears After Grub Load?

Aug 23, 2010

I am currently running 9.10 ubuntu (gnome). I have a dual core intel chip at 3.00 ghz. My mobo is an ASUS P5ND2-SLI. My mobo will support up to 8gb of ram. Now, as we all know, 32-bit os/kernel will only support like 3.2gb, and 64-bit like 4gb. I'd like to install a pae kernel so I can get the most from my mobo, but honestly, I don't have a clue where to start looking for a pae kernel. I'd like to be able to select it from the list that already appears after the grub loads, and if I like it, be able to remove the rest from the list, or just make it default.

Question, in CPU-G, it says my architecture is i686. I don't know if that's the os/distro, or the kernel itself. it also lists the GCC version as 4.4.1 and Xorg as 1.6.4. my current kernel is Linux 2.6.31-22-generic. Again, I'm trying to find a pae kernel, but I don't know if my os/distro will make a difference, if the architecture is the kernel or os itself. I am still fairly new to ubuntu, and I must say, I've made the switch completely from windows.. which blows...

Ubuntu :: Grub Screen Takes About 20 Seconds To Minute To Load

May 21, 2010

I just installed linux mint a couple of days ago and everything went great but now the grub screen takes about 20 seconds to a minute to load. It's not a huge issue but kind of annoying since the one that ubuntu installed took a second and I was at the menu. I imagine that it has to do with the background picture but i'm not sure if that would slow it down that much.

Ubuntu Installation :: Goes To A Screen That Has GRUB In The Upper Left Corner And Does Not Load?

Aug 16, 2010

I have Windows XP, Vista and Ubuntu (10.04) all installed on my single hard drive. I re-installed XP and then ran the Vista CD to repair the Vista bootloader so that I could boot into XP and Vista. I can't figure out how to boot into Ubuntu now. I tried using EasyBCD (I believe an older version, maybe 1.72) to add Ubuntu to the Vista bootloader but I didn't have any luck. Ubuntu is in the menu, but when I select it, it goes to a screen that has GRUB in the upper left corner and does not load Ubuntu.

If it helps, before I re-installed XP and re-installed the Vista bootloader I was using GRUB for XP, Vista and Ubuntu because Ubuntu was the last thing to get installed.Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot InfoSummary:===============================> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdasda1: _________________________________________________________________________File system: ntfsBoot sector type: Windows Vista/7B

Ubuntu :: Boot Won't Load After Grub-install?

Aug 19, 2010

I messed it up with the grub in Ubuntu Netbook and the grub loader just prompt the "grub console" during the system boot.

However, I can boot manually by selecting manually the kernel:

Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic
boot

But, of course, that is not really practical for an everyday use.

I tried with the update-grub command, but nothing happens, the grub.cfg is there, with all the kernels list, but the grub loader won't load it! It is just ignoring it!

If I load the config file manually it prompts the grub command line again (with the "welcome" message), so, it IS loading the grub.cfg, but it's not working!!!

This is the content of my grub.cfg file:

Code:
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

Ubuntu :: New Dual-boot But Cannot Load Windows7(grub)?

Apr 12, 2011

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.

Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)

General :: Triple Boot - Need To Load Kernel First

Aug 15, 2010

I have installed Linux Mint 9 within Win XP and have installed an additional HDD as a Slave on the same IDE cable as my DVD drive. I installed ubuntu on to the additional HDD using the live CD and when I try to boot the computer I am greeted by two versions of GRUB?! First version appears to be the one that comes with Mint and so asks me to boot either Windows or Mint, when I select Mint I get ubuntu's version of Grub, it asks me to boot one of three OS's; here's where it gets weird:

Top of screen says:
GNU GRUB Version 1.98-1ubuntu5-1mint2
If I select Win, it boots fine. If I select Mint it boots fine however if I select Ubuntu it says:
error: no such device
error: file not found
error: you need to load the kernel first

I pressed "e" within grub and was faced with this:
insmod ntfs
set root ='(hd1,1)'
search --no floppy --fs-uuid --set f6422203421e479
loopback loop0 /linuxmint/disks/root.disk
setroot =(loop0)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.3-21-generic root =dev/sdb1 loop=/linuxmint/disks/root.disk ro quiet splash

Ubuntu :: Grub Screen Changed With Each New Kernel / Why Is So?

Jan 3, 2010

I have been learning about Ubuntu since 8.10. I have my two computers running dual boot (W7 + 8.04 & Vista + 9.10).

Sorry if this is a noob question, but I have noticed that each time there's a new kernel (now I have 2.6.31.16-generic), the grub OS selection screen adds 2 lines:
- One for the new kernel
- One for the new kernel - recovery mode

So, since I installed Karmic (2.6.31.14) Ubuntu Update has added 4 rows and shows code...
What is the rationale behinf this?
Why would I want to boot using the previous kernel versions?

In my laptop, it's GRUB 2. How can I eliminate the unused options?
