Mar 4, 2010if I make a usb key a install key. Can I go in there and updated the ubuntu and then install the new updates when I reinstall the drive.

Mar 17, 2011I'm going to be doing some field testing of Ubuntu for compatibility on various laptops. I'd like to have a USB stick containing the latest kernel, drivers, packages, etc. I already have one prepared with the 10.10 release, but there have been many updates since then and no 10.10.1 release thus far.
Is it possible to update my existing flash drive to the latest and greatest...using the software update tool while booted using the drive? ...from within an existing Ubuntu 10.10 installation? .manually?

Mar 24, 2011For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstalled 10.10 Now Laptop Won't Boot
Apr 13, 2011I have a laptop with two hdds. Winsows XP is loaded on the first, and I used the second hdd to play around with linux distros. I had Linux Mint and Zorin installed on the second hdd and everything was working fine. I decided I wanted to go back to Ubuntu 10.10, so I installed it to the second hdd, overwriting everything on it. Everything seemed to go fine, but when I went to restart from the install, I got some sort of I/O error and since then my laptop wont boot at all. I have tried telling it to boot from different hdds n the Windows BIOS. I have also tried 2 different live dvds of Ubuntu 10.10, all to no avail. All I get is a blank screen with a flashing cursor.

Jul 17, 2011I had some trouble with my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 so I decided to reinstall the OS. (I have my /home on a separate partition).

I re installed Ubuntu on the partition I set aside for the OS. Ubuntu installed, everything works as it should but now all the contents my Home folder is gone! I did not set any options that would of formatted the /home partition during installation I only set the partition to be used for home selecting [use this partition]. I suspect that Ubuntu set the home folder back to the way it comes out of the box I need to recover this drive, its so important that its life or death! How can I recover this partition and the files that where on this drive?

Aug 21, 2011I just finished my Windows 7 reinstall, and I go to reboot into Linux, and there's not grub loader. I go into a live CD and get into the grub prompt. Here's what I got:
sudo grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
Error 17: Cannot mound selected partition
As for additional information, my fstab is listed below:

Jul 7, 2010I'm completely new to Ubuntu and only installed yesterday for the first time. The install worked fine. After booting it asked me to install updates. I did this and now when I boot i get:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/blah blah does not exist. Dropping to a shell Now I've tried searching through the forums and I've seen people with similar problems however none of the solutions suggested to them have worked. The only thing that may work if it is explained to me how to do it is in Grub 2 it is looking for a UUID. Now I tried editing this on startup to /dev/sda5 instead and it loads. Only thing is I read that this is temporary and would have to do it each time which means it's a workaround not a solution. As I explained at the start, first time of using Ubuntu and so far haven't been particularly impressed as I have another problem with the processor being used up by loads of 'udevd

Jun 7, 2010I have installed ubuntu 10.04 64 bit in April and it has worked flawlessly. However, today I ws prompted to install Kernel updates. Now when I try to boot it continually cycles between a black screen and the NVIDIA logo.
Yes I have been using the nvidia drivers previously but without incident till now.
I have tried crtl-alt-f1 but this does not stop the cycling.

May 3, 2010I appear to be unable to select individual updates for installation anymore from the Yast Online update screen. I use this to install updates manually on 11.1. But everytime I think I've chosen an update to install, all the updates listed get installed, and not just the one I've chosen. For example I just chose a "Fuse security update" to install and clicked the "Install" button. Nothing further happens until I click "Apply". Then all patches listed under the "All available" listing get applied. How do I just apply the patches that I want to ?

ALl the hard drives show themself Can you not do 32bit to 64bit or something...?

Installing updates and applications on each takes a lot of time (even though i use a script to install all the updates and software).
So is it possible for me to install lucid on a usb flash drive (unetbootin) apply all the patches & software and then run the installation on each computer from the flash drive.
Will it work?
Or i will have to follow the way i generally do, by a script .

Jul 27, 2011I have a setup with 3 hard drives. The first hard drive has windows 7 and is a solid state, for my fast computing needs. The second hard drive has another copy of windows 7 on one partition and Ubuntu 11.04 on another (and SWAP space).The third hard drive is just storage.Grub is installed on the first(SSD) hard drive, as well as the MBR (master boot record) for the two windows installs (select win7 in grub, then it lets me select which windows install to boot).Now I want to get rid of my solid state drive, and just run from the second hard drive with dual boot.How can I install a new MBR on the second hard drive without having to re-install both OS's?I've tried removing the first hard drive and using bootrec.exe to re-write the MBR and it will not work.I can install grub, and it boots to ubuntu but when I try windows 7 it says there is no MBR.

Mar 26, 2011i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.
