I went from 32bit Ubuntu 9.10 to 64 bit 9.10 So, originally I had 3x1500 gig hds in RAID 5 (mdadm) worked fine. Now I installed Ubuntu 64 bit, but when I go ti Disk Utility, it sees the previous RAID array but says: Not running, not enough components to start. ALl the hard drives show themself Can you not do 32bit to 64bit or something...?

In 9.10, the raid was working fine. I decided to fresh install Ubuntu 10.04 and I can't seem to start the raid array. In Disk Utility, the array shows up but when I try to start it I get the error "Not enough components to start the array"
I've tried to assemble the array using mdadm and the following:
mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdd1
This returns the following error mdadm: failed to create /dev/md0
I have no idea what to do now, and unfortunately I don't have any backups
My Ubuntu is 10.04 64bit.

I have a strange issue with my RAID5 array - it worked fine for a month, a couple days ago it didn't start on boot with mdadm reporting "Input/Output error" - I didn't panic restarted my computer, same error. Then opened a Disk utility and it reported State: Not running, partially assembled - don't know why, I've pressed Stop RAID Array and started it again, voila - it reported State: Running - I've checked components list and there was nothing wrong with it. So I run Check Array utility, waited almost 3 hours to finish it and it worked since than, till today's morning - I've started my computer, and here we go, same error.

I can see nothing wrong there yet not sure why mdadm fails on boot. I do not really like the windows solution I guess, when I check my array again, it will work fine again, but it then can fail in the same way without known reason.
I had Fedora 12 and windwos 7 installed,today i reinstalled windows, and when i restart i dont get anymore the boot menu to choose between linux and windwos and i tried to reinstalled fedora but i am getting this error Grub Loader error 17,what can i do to solve this problem,i am new to linux
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Windows Vista 32-bit on a RAID 1 array; I'm using the RAID provided by my motherboard so it's fakeRAID. Anyway, I'd like to do some C development under Linux but I'm not exactly sure how to go about installing it on a software RAID 1 array without messing up Windows. I'm not sure which Linux distro I'm going to install, so I'm hoping that information isn't important. Would I just resize my Windows partition and put Linux on the newly created partition? Do I have to worry about where Linux will put its bootloader or will it manage that on its own? I didn't mean software RAID, I meant fakeRAID.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with two hdds. Winsows XP is loaded on the first, and I used the second hdd to play around with linux distros. I had Linux Mint and Zorin installed on the second hdd and everything was working fine. I decided I wanted to go back to Ubuntu 10.10, so I installed it to the second hdd, overwriting everything on it. Everything seemed to go fine, but when I went to restart from the install, I got some sort of I/O error and since then my laptop wont boot at all. I have tried telling it to boot from different hdds n the Windows BIOS. I have also tried 2 different live dvds of Ubuntu 10.10, all to no avail. All I get is a blank screen with a flashing cursor.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a raid5 on 10 disk, 750gb and it have worked fine with grub for a long time with ubuntu 10.04 lts. A couple of days ago I added a disk to the raid, growd it and then resized it.. BUT, I started the resize-process on a terminal on another computer, and after some time my girlfriend powered down that computer!
So the resize process cancelled in the middle and i couldn't acess any of the HDDs so I rebooted the server.
Now the problem, the system is not booting up, simple black with a blinking line. Used a rescue CD to boot it up, finised the resize-process and the raid seems to be working fine so I tried to boot normal again. Same problem. Rescue cd, updated grub, got several errors: error: unsupported RAID version: 0.91. I have tried to purge grub, grub-pc, grub commmon, removed /boot/grub and installed grub again. Same problem.
I have tried to erased mbr (# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=446 count=1) on sda (ide disk, system), sdb (sata, new raid disk). Same problem. Removed and reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 and is now getting error: no such device: (hdd id). Again tried to reinstall grub on both sda and sdb, no luck. update-grub is still generating error about raid id 0.91 and is back on a blinking line on normal boot. When you'r resizeing a raid MDADM changed the ID from 0.90 to 0.91 to prevent something that happend happened. But since I have completed the resize-process MDADM have indeed changed the ID back to 0.90 on all disks.
I have also tried to follow a howto on a similar problem with a patch on [URL] But I cant compile, various error about dpkg. So my problem is, I cant get grub to work. It just gives me a blinking line and unsupported RAID version: 0.91.
I recently (yesterday) did a clean install of 9.1 (karmic koala) on my system. After having struggled with various video driver issues with my 7800GT and getting the proprietary nvidia drivers installed, everything seemed to be working fine. Today I ran some updates and now when the system boots, it crashes down to a text login prompt.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some trouble with my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 so I decided to reinstall the OS. (I have my /home on a separate partition).

I re installed Ubuntu on the partition I set aside for the OS. Ubuntu installed, everything works as it should but now all the contents my Home folder is gone! I did not set any options that would of formatted the /home partition during installation I only set the partition to be used for home selecting [use this partition]. I suspect that Ubuntu set the home folder back to the way it comes out of the box I need to recover this drive, its so important that its life or death! How can I recover this partition and the files that where on this drive?
I just finished my Windows 7 reinstall, and I go to reboot into Linux, and there's not grub loader. I go into a live CD and get into the grub prompt. Here's what I got:
sudo grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
Error 17: Cannot mound selected partition

I tried installing VLC through Synaptic. However, i got the reply "all components could not be installed". VLC does not appear in the menus. All four software repositories have been ticked.
How can I install VLC?
I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04 and I now often get boot messages about a degraded raid.
I'm fairly experienced, but I'm confused which raid it is talking about. I have a raid5 array, but I don't boot of that, and it seems fine when I finally get it to boot. Previously, I didn't have any other raid arrays[1], but now I seem to have two others called md126 and md127, they both seem to be degraded. Where did they come from?
[1] I *do* have two 80GB drives that I was booting from in RAID1, but that was a looong time ago, and I have since only booted from one of them. The partition table indeed shows partitions 1 and 5 are raid autodetect and /proc/mdstat shows they are degraded ([U_]). Could it be that this is causing the problem? If so, why has this only started to happen since the upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04?Anyway, perhaps it is a good idea to add in that second disk to the raid1 array. If so, how to do that? Note that, I've also noticed that when I boot and get to the screen when I select from the different kernel versions, I now get a couple of really old ones too - my thought is that these are from the raid1 disk that I stopped using. If I add it to the array, how can I be sure it will mirror in the correct direction?
It could be that I have fairly recently plugged in that second RAID1 disk, after a long time of not having enough spare sata sockets (I switched my RAID5 array from 8 disks to only 3 disks, so suddenly had a lot more spare sockets).
I have ubuntu 9.10, and installed the latest lampp with default options. Apache/Mysql/Proftpd would start and stop fine. I then did:

I just installed OpenVPN using apt, and it doesn't seem to have components which are distributed with the source, such as easy-rsa. Why would tools like this be excluded from the package? I prefer to use apt rather than compiling from source, to keep things neat and simple.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Unbuntu 11.04 on a Via raid 0. I have windows already setup and it boots fine, but Ubuntu does not see the raid set. Running dmraid -ay (or any valid switch with dmraid) returns :
sudo dmraid -ay -v

ERROR: via: invalid checksum on /dev/sda
no raid disks
mainboard is Asus M2V, with 2x Hitachi 250Gb disks in raid 0 configuration set in BIOS. I have a 3rd hard disk on the onboard Marvell 88SE6121 sata controller but this is not seen at all by Ubuntu either. I was thinking of installing it here if Ubuntu does not work the RAID, but no go it would seem. I do remember installing an earlier version of ubuntu on this very same board using RAID 0 (2x 80Gb drives at that time) and the RAID was reconised and worked fine straight from live cd to full install.

I recently brought home an old Compaq server from work. I was told that it works fine. When I brought it home, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 server from a cd. While it's trying to install, I get the message "Installation step failed. An installation step failed. You can try to run the following item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Load installer components from CD." I turned off the computer and tried it again several times. Each time the same message appears.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an old desktop I've been working to put back together and get working. When I took it apart I was under the assumption there was a problem with the mobo. Now I've begun to question that (the information that led to that belief was very slim).
I'm looking online right now but if anyone knows of a Linux distro I can use to diagnose/ check hardware in that machine. Something that runs live would be preferable. I'm thinking knoppix and am reading about it right now.

I have a fancy new Quad Core Xeon machine here that I'm trying to install F10 x64 on. The installation went fine. When it reboots the first time, though, I get the dreaded Error Loading OS.
So I dug up my bookmark of the awesome Grub HOWTO here and followed the steps to install Grub manually. Alas, I get the same result after installing it. Even tried doing a makeactive (hd0) just in case, but no luck.
I did more searching and searched for "raid install" but didn't find anything helpful. So here I am... hoping somebody has some insight.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am re-installing Ubuntu onto my desktop PC which has Windows 7, openSUSE 11.2 and Fedora Core 12. First I tried Ubuntu 9.10. Near the end of the installation the machine reboots and the monitor shows the following message:
"Ubiquity.components.partman failed - Exit code 10. Further info in /var/log/syslog"
Tried again with Ubuntu 10.04 beta2 with same problem.
How can I view and read /var/log/syslog if Ubuntu fails to be installed and therefore I cannot access this log?
I am attempting to install Maverick on an older pc. It has (2) mirrored 153 GB SATA drives. I set aside 33GB for a linux partition, by shrinking the partition in Vista.
Choosing to "Install along side windows" is not an available option. I can only choose use who disk, or use empty area. I choose use the empty area, and the Ubiquity installer gets hung up when attempting to format the empty space as EXT4. When I scroll up on the output I notice some error messages referencing NTFS. When I use Gparted it shows a possible problem.

I ran chkdsk /r on the Vista partiton, in case there was a problem there. The issue still persists.
I have a Dell PowerEdge SC1425 with two SCSI-disks, that I have tried installing Debian Squeeze on. This machine has previously been running Lenny (with grub 1), and the upgrade was done by booting a live-cd, mounting the root partition and moving everything in / to /oldroot/, then booting the netinstall (from USB), selecting expert install and setting up everything (not formatting the partition).
Both disks have identical partition tables:
/dev/sda1 7 56196 de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 8 250 1951897+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda3 * 251 9726 76115970 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 contain a Dell Utility, that I have left in place.
/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 are members of a Raid-1 for swap.
/dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 are members of a Raid-1 for / formatted with reiserfs.
After installation, grub loads, but fails with the following message:
GRUB loading.

Doing "ls" shows:
(md0) (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1)
I can do the following to get grub to boot:
set root=(hd0,3)

insmod normal

This will bring me to the grub menu, and the system boots.
It appears that grub has only found md0, which I believe is the swap partition, because ls (md0)/ returns error: unknown filesystem. I have installed grub to both sda, sdb and md1, and tried dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and dpkg-reconfigure mdadm, as well as update-grub.
I manually added (md1) /dev/md1
to /boot/grub/device.map, but still no result.
I have run the boot_info_script.sh, but unfortunately I cannot attach the RESULTS.txt, because the forum aparently does not allow the txt-extension. Instead I have placed it here: [URL]. I am tempted to go back to grub-legacy, but it seems I am quite close to getting the system working with grub2.
I am trying to install Ubuntu on a nvidia board which, based on the forums I have perused, is a FAKERaid chipset. Originally I tried to install according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto to no avail. I gave up and am resorting to breaking down my raid setup (thus losing my Windows XP installation) and using Linux's software raid (which seems to be the recommended method) with the Alternate CD install.
I went in to the bios and completely disabled my board's RAID function. I then followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/SoftwareRAID , except it popped up with a window advising me "one or more serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices?" which that page didn't mention. I believe I selected "Yes". Setting up the partitions I made (from beginning of disk to end of disk) a RAID1 200MB /boot partition, a RAID0 / partition (90GB?), free space not set up in RAID (approx 20GB for each SATA drive to later install Windows on [if that's even possible]) & then the SWAP partition 2GB at the end of one of the disks (is it OK that this one wasn't in RAID?).
The installation completed, as far as I can tell, without a hitch. Except also of note: my network card doesn't work in the installer (gives an error message about unable to configure dhcp) so i'm not connected to the internet. Then I restart and the following appears: grub loading: error: biosdisk read error. Followed by what appears to be the Ubuntu loading splash (just a small white shape in the middle of the screen), and then:

When I start Firefox I get the subject error. Suse 11.2. What does it mean, and how can I fix it? It also says "[java script application]" in the task bar when FF launches.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?
