Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wont Boot After Latest Install Of Kernel Updates

Jun 7, 2010

I have installed ubuntu 10.04 64 bit in April and it has worked flawlessly. However, today I ws prompted to install Kernel updates. Now when I try to boot it continually cycles between a black screen and the NVIDIA logo.

Yes I have been using the nvidia drivers previously but without incident till now.

I have tried crtl-alt-f1 but this does not stop the cycling.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restricted Modules Not Updating With Latest Kernel Updates Lucid 10.04

May 8, 2010

I have noticed in the recent updates there is a Kernel update 2.6.32-22 but there is no restricted modules included. On my Desktop I have a Nvidia card which I installed the driver using the Hardware Drivers Application. As far as I know these Drivers are ether reinstalled or updated whenever there is a kernel update.

I also have a Laptop with a ATI Radeon card which I did run the updates and ended up (after the reboot) in low graphics mode, after a bit of work I was able to reinstall the drivers and get my desktop back so that's ok now.

I had this problem a few years ago with an old version of Ubuntu, kernel updates but no restricted drivers. The drivers turned up the next day and all was fine. I was just wandering if this is a known issue with Lucid or if anyone else has had this problem, It's been a couple of days since I noticed the Kernel update but still Restricted Modules. Oh I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04

Ubuntu Installation :: Create USB Install Drive With Latest Updates?

Mar 17, 2011

I'm going to be doing some field testing of Ubuntu for compatibility on various laptops. I'd like to have a USB stick containing the latest kernel, drivers, packages, etc. I already have one prepared with the 10.10 release, but there have been many updates since then and no 10.10.1 release thus far.

Is it possible to update my existing flash drive to the latest and greatest...using the software update tool while booted using the drive? ...from within an existing Ubuntu 10.10 installation? .manually?

Ubuntu Installation :: Newer Kernel Updates AFTER 2.6.32-17 Has A Randomness At Boot Time Whether The System Will Completely Boot Or Not?

Jul 26, 2010

I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.

For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24

It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

Ubuntu Installation :: New Kernel Updates Don't Show Up In GRUB Or Boot

Mar 9, 2010

I'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).

However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.

Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?

Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?

How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Hangs After Latest Updates / Resolve This?

Jan 29, 2010

A first for me with Ubuntu. The system has hung. Well almost hung.

After installing the latest automatic updates - I'm sorry, I don't know how to identify which ones they were, but it was on 29 January 2010 - when selecting almost any application the system almost hangs. By almost hangs, I mean, the cursor will move very slightly once every 10 seconds or so, but even if it can be manipulated to a certain point, no action can be taken.

The only way out of this situation that I have been able to find is a hard reboot. (I was used to this type of thing with Windows XP, but had never seen it before with Ubuntu).

Reverting to Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-17-genereic-PAE at the GRUB boot up option screen solves the problem.

Any suggestions on what might be happening, how to fix it, or if it is even worth bothering with? It is working just fine (so far) on the older generic-PAE.

Ubuntu Installation :: Latest Updates Break The Xserver?

Jun 13, 2010

Ubuntu has been great and it is a great Linux distro. Unfortunately, the update of 9.10 desktop edition to release 10.4 failed on a couple of fronts.

1) Xserver is no longer working;
2) An upgrade of grub-pc causes an exception.

The system ran perfectly before the update was performed. The update resulted in Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of MBR. This is a BAD idea. usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and is use is discouraged.

Based on information found at [URL]... an attempt was made to execute the following command. sudo aptitude dist-upgrade But that resulted in E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run sudo dpkg configure ato correct the problem The later launches an upgrade of grub-pc. This routine requests the selection of which devices are to be used to store grub-install. When that was done ... GRUB failed to install to the followed devices: /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd4

Do you want to continue anyway? If you do, your computer may not start up properly. GRUB installation failed. Continue? Questions:
1) Can / should the upgrade of grub-pc be bypassed in order to get the system running?
2) If not, what values should be selected when selecting the devices to store grub-install?
3)Because the computer is a RAID configuration, would someone advise are there special considerations which should be considered?
4) Once grub-pc is resolved or bypassed, should the commands found in the aforementioned article be used to repair xserver.
5) Are there additional measures which will be needed to in order to complete the update to release 10.4?

Here are some helpful details on the system configuration

The computer has four disk drives using RAID 1 and RAID 5.In the following configuration RAID5 Device #0 750.2 GB Sotfware RAID device
#1 750.2 GB ext4
SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) 320.1 GB ATA WDC WD3200AAKS-2
#4 primary 250.1 GB K raid

Ubuntu Installation :: Exporting LATEST Updates (deltas) To File?

Sep 20, 2010

I have Alienvault (which is debian based) running on an offline network. I need to have a repo server on that network in order to provide updates/other installation sources. Currently I have configured Ubuntu Server 10.04 as an apt-mirror on an internet-connected network.

What I need to do is find a way to automatically take the newest updates, and export them to disk. I need to mirror the internet-connected-repo server on the offline-network side. But I don't want to burn all 40 gigs or so every time new updates come out. Basically, I'd like to perform incremental backups of the mirror after the first full backup. Is it possible to automate this daily?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 After Latest Updates Unable To Login To The System

Jul 15, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on my new desktop. After installation all gone well.

The initial upgrades after fresh installation also ran well and I was able to reboot and use the system successfully. This was before three-days.Yesterday night I ran again the Update Manager and installed the available (4-5) updates and then I installed Sun-Java-JDK using Synaptic Package Manager using the packages from the canonical partners.

After installation was done I shut down the system and in the morning when
I restarted the system the login screen is coming up but on entering the login credentials a black screen with some text(unable to see the text) flashes and returns me back to login screen.I tried logging in with both normal and admin type users. But admin type user too encounters the same problem.

I have partitioned my 500GB into 5 partitions and there is sufficient data on each partition.

I assume fresh installation would fix it and the data on logical partitions would be intact but doing this re-installation would require me to install the updates again and do all the settings I did till now again.

Software :: Can't Boot Fedora 12 With Latest Kernel

Jul 18, 2010

I am running the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on an MacBookPro5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gigabytes or RAM.

I updated my system to use kernel 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.x86_64. Now when I try to boot the machine to that kernel, I'm left with a blank screen except for a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner after going through the load progress bar animation that appears at the bottom of the scene when Fedora is booting up.

I have my system configured to use the nVidia drivers for OpenGL 3D acceleration

I have to boot to previous kernel to have a usable system.

What can I do so that the system will boot up properly with the latest kernel?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Boot Failure After Latest Kernel Update (12)?

Mar 14, 2010

Dual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -

I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Updates - No Auto Boot From Grub ?

Mar 27, 2010

I'm remote from my system and so have to wait 2-3 days before I can get access directly, but I've noticed that when the kernel updates automatically (or forced by me), the next reboot stops at the grub page awaiting confirmation of the kernel I want to boot. grub.conf doesnt seem significantly different from that of fedora (my previos distro for this machine) and even has the default lines and times spec'd, so I can't see what's holding it up. Any ideas how I can prevent this so I can have my system auto-updating the kernel AND safe to reboot remotely?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

OpenSUSE Install :: Latest Kernel - What Are The Differences Between 11.4 And 11.3

Mar 20, 2011

Installed 11.4 yesterday and wanted to check i'm running the latest kernel. uname -a brings up (and a little other thing before hand)

2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.

Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.

Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.

Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?

How do I undo the local version of the boot menu so I can see the newest kernel?

General :: Make Grub Keep Its Default Boot Under Kernel Updates?

Jan 30, 2010

I dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).

The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.

I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.
