I recently intalled Fedora 12. After installing, I tried to install update, i received an error message as follow:
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again.
I enabled RPM fusion free and non-free.
I have Kubuntu 9.10 and i cant update anything because I have a proxy set up. and I cant figure out how to turn it off. I did turn it off through synaptic but its still turned on.

I appear to be unable to select individual updates for installation anymore from the Yast Online update screen. I use this to install updates manually on 11.1. But everytime I think I've chosen an update to install, all the updates listed get installed, and not just the one I've chosen. For example I just chose a "Fuse security update" to install and clicked the "Install" button. Nothing further happens until I click "Apply". Then all patches listed under the "All available" listing get applied. How do I just apply the patches that I want to ?

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
When attempting to install updates on 10.4, I get this message:

Whenever I try to check for updates, it will say updating cache, but then it will say Failed to download repository information Check your internet connection.
I'm connected to the internet fine, so I don't know what to do. Also, at the top right corner next to the power button on the top panel, there is a message thing saying "The update information is outdated"

1) I thought linux (or Ubuntu) would tell me somehow when there are new updates I need to install, like Windows does. But I never see any indication. I used this software name "Ubuntu Tweak" to check for update and found 32 new packages. Why wasn't I told about these? Did I accidentally turn something off and I need to turn it back on? Or do I have to configure something special?
2) How can I find out what features or bug fixes these updates provide. For example, one of the files was named "linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic". I'm guessing this is part of the core system. I would really like to know what changed in this and the other 31 updates.
Automatic updates fail because:

Manually updating from yaST gives the same error. However, I cannot find the above packge available for installation. i found the following link in the "Yast2-ncurses broken?" thread, but it doesnt automatically install, and I am unsure whether it will work with ver 11.2:

Ubuntu 10.04 on Asus Eee/901. I am in Italy running through the college network proxy. I have defined the system-wide proxy and everything looks good. However none of the Linux software packages update (Synaptic, Ubuntu centre and for that matter, Thunderbird) they seem to ignore the Proxy and its required authentication - needless to say, I cannot update/download important packages/updates. System Proxy seems OK because Firefox is working but that's the only one.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on my new desktop. After installation all gone well.
The initial upgrades after fresh installation also ran well and I was able to reboot and use the system successfully.This was before three-days.Yesterday night I ran again the Update Manager and installed the available (4-5) updates and then I installed Sun-Java-JDK using Synaptic Package Manager using the packages from the canonical partners.
After installation was done I shut down the system and in the morning when
I restarted the system the login screen is coming up but on entering the login credentials a black screen with some text(unable to see the text) flashes and returns me back to login screen.I tried logging in with both normal and admin type users.But admin type user too encounters the same problem.
I have partitioned my 500GB into 5 partitions and there is sufficient data on each partition.
I assume fresh installation would fix it and the data on logical partitions would be intact but doing this re-installation would require me to install the updates again and do all the settings I did till now again.
if I make a usb key a install key. Can I go in there and updated the ubuntu and then install the new updates when I reinstall the drive.

I recently had windows vista taken off my hard drive and my partitions realigned to create more storage space on my hard drive. I don't now if this is related. I was able to install upgrades previously.
i just finished a fresh install of F14 and ran yum update, but it comes back with no updates? In the past, i've always had tons of updates after an install. Did the updates happen during installation so that I have a fully updated version?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm completely new to Ubuntu and only installed yesterday for the first time. The install worked fine. After booting it asked me to install updates. I did this and now when I boot i get:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: ls /dev)

The only thing that may work if it is explained to me how to do it is in Grub 2 it is looking for a UUID. Now I tried editing this on startup to /dev/sda5 instead and it loads. Only thing is I read that this is temporary and would have to do it each time which means it's a workaround not a solution. I'd like to have a USB stick containing the latest kernel, drivers, packages, etc. I already have one prepared with the 10.10 release, but there have been many updates since then and no 10.10.1 release thus far.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu 10.04 64 bit in April and it has worked flawlessly. However, today I ws prompted to install Kernel updates. Now when I try to boot it continually cycles between a black screen and the NVIDIA logo.
Yes I have been using the nvidia drivers previously but without incident till now.
I have tried crtl-alt-f1 but this does not stop the cycling.
I have noticed that when installing Jessie, the graphical installer downloads updates to packages while installing if connected via Ethernet to the Internet. Remaining disconnected solves this problem. Is there any way to avoid this and install without downloading files other than apt lists?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but...well, I just installed Fedora after using Ubuntu for a while, and everything has been going good, except for installing upgrades. When I open the Update Manager, it says there is 399 updates. When I click install, after about ten seconds this pops up:Code:An internal system error has occuredA problem we were not expected has occured. Please report this bug in your distribution bugtracker wth the error description.

Update Manager popped up today and has a few Recommended updates for my machine. Included in the Recommended updates is a new kernel (2.6.32-25). Next to several of the kernel/header updates is the text "(New install)". What does the "New install" text mean here? Will installing the kernel/header updates do anything destructive to the system?
