Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install Updates - Failed To Fetch
Jun 1, 2011
I'm unable to install updates and new packages. I receive messages such as the following:
W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.161 80]
W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.161 80]
W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.161 80]
I recently had windows vista taken off my hard drive and my partitions realigned to create more storage space on my hard drive. I don't now if this is related. I was able to install upgrades previously.
I just can't get any updates from: [URL] AND [URL] In both cases it says "404 not found" Here's the code out of the terminal after typing "sudo apt-get update"
W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
when I open the update manager, he lists 14 items as recomended updates and when I click on install updates appears a box with this mesage "An error occurred" and makes the following list: Code: W: Failed to fetch [URL] Size mismatch
Lately when I've tried to update my packages many of them don't update. I get nothing out of the ordinary when using the terminal but when I try to update via the Update manger I get this error message:
Code: Error message: Fetch failed: W:Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirror.steadfast.net_debian_dists_testing_main_source_Sources Hash Sum mismatch W:Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirror.steadfast.net_debian_dists_testing_main_binary-amd64_Packages Hash Sum mismatch, W:Failed to fetch http://mirror.steadfast.net/debian/dists/testing/updates/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 208.100.4.53 80]

I've tried several different mirrors but get the same error with every one. Same result with ftp as well. Yesterday I upgraded to Wheezy and every package successfully upgraded, but today the problem started again.
Fail to fetch 2 ppa.launchpad.net addresses and another cause the upgrade to terminate. The error messages suggest some type of network error. Should I wait a week and try the upgrade again?
Problem with my upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. I got the update manager to show the upgrade to 11.04 button - proceeded. It downloaded 1300 files or there abouts then did a failed to fetch http://76.73.4.58/ubuntu/pool/main/g/. I took a screen shot which left the rest out - also did a select all - copy - no paste occurred. - re-obtained. So I'm thinking that the missing files are missing on this server and my current thought is that I will go to another server and try downloading from that one. BTW did the same upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 to be able to upgrade to 11.04 that one worked well I didn't know there was a 10.10 upgrade since I got here; there are a few problems that went away.. This upgrade only showed after changing my status to normal from long term.

When I recently attempted to install Wine onto my computer from the Software Center, after the download bar had filled completely, I received the following error.
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...u8.4_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]
I'm trying to upgrade everything on this computer to the release Lucid, and am getting errors retrieving some files, here's a sample of one of the errors, (the rest are very similar)
W: Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
9.04 has not been updating and is giving these messages. Failed to fetch [URL]...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.170 80] Failed to fetch [URL]...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.170 80] Failed to fetch [URL]...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.170 80] Failed to fetch [URL]...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.170 80] Failed to fetch [URL]...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.170 80] ..... I'm running 9.04 and trying to use the update manager. On checking for updates, I get the error message:W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...ty/Release.gpg Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...tion-en_US.bz2 Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)(more...)This used to work, but now it doesn't. I tried selecting all kinds of different sources in the "Software Sources" GUI. And this seemed to change my /etc/sources.list accordingly. But, whatever the hostname given (above mirror.uoregon...), that same IP address is shown 69.219.... huh? I can browse the web, etc fine from this computer
Currently have 9.04 installed. Wanted to upgrade to 9.10. Down loaded and burned alternate CD. The desktop doesn't have internet access. The upgrade failed and generated an error:
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...0.9.10_all.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
I accessed: [URL]
Is it possible edit/alter a script to point to correct file and get by this error?
I am having trouble upgrading and updating. When updating the file downloads to 99% and then stops. The error message is:
[Code]...
I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?
I upgraded to natty on release day and everything went fine, but about three days ago when I went to update my sources, I get this: Code: sudo apt-get update Code: W: Failed to fetch [URL] Sources 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch [URL] Packages 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I've looked through the forums, but similar problems are always tied to the mozilla repo, not this one. It seems important, so I'm not sure if I should just delete it or what. My sources.list looks like this: Code: # deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release i386 (20101007)]/ maverick main restricted # See [URL] for how to upgrade to newer versions of the distribution. deb [URL] natty main restricted deb-src [URL] natty main restricted ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the distribution .....
On a new machine running Ubuntu 10.04.2, the freshclam program (in clamav-freshclam version 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.2) won't do updates to the database. It fails on DNS queries. DNS works OK for other programs. The tcpdump command shows that it sends the queries to 127.0.0.1 instead of the correct DNS servers specified by /etc/resolv.conf. Of course it doesn't get an answer because it is asking the wrong IP address.
There is also a --no-dns option, but that didn't help/
Do I need to tell ot what the DNS servers are, somewhere?
I've got a problem when i try apt-get update I get the following in the report: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dist...86/Packages.gz 404 Not Found Failed to fetch http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dist...rce/Sources.gz 404 Not Found R
On a new machine (Ubuntu 10.04.2), the freshclam program (in the package clamav-freshclam version 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.2) won't do updates. It fails on DNS queries. DNS is working for other programs OK. Diagnosis with tcpdump shows that it is sending the queries to 127.0.0.1 instead of the actual DNS servers designated in the /etc/resolv.conf file. Of course it won't get an answer because it is querying the wrong IP address. There is a --no-dns option which I tried, but that doesn't help. Any idea if freshclam or clamav needs its own config of DNS servers?
When I try to run the Online Updates to the system through Yast I get the following errors for each package:

Had the update manager running this morning and it was in the install dpkg phase of the operation when the wonderful power grid I am on went down due to the thunderstorm we were having at the time. I was watching the update at the time the power failed and the install was not completed at the time the computer shut off. When power came back on and I restarted the computer, the log in screen came up only showing 1 and 1/2 of the 4 accounts I have on the computer. When I clicked on the one full account showing, nothing happened. After manually powering off at the tower button, and restarting, I was able to get a log in screen that was usable to log in.
I was even able to launch Firefox, although it is running extremely slow, and my audio properties will not come up and the pop down bar at the top that shows applications, places, etc, does not come down. Just overall, the whole computer does not run properly. Windows take forever to open, if at all, and forever to close, if at all, etc. Restart button does not work, etc. Is there any way to manually run update manager to re-install the parts that obviously are corrupt on the previous attempt at install? Or, is there anyway I can revert back to the status prior to the update attempt?
Update Manager fails to update the files in Karmic 9.10. The Internet access is fine but it fails to fetch from repository (404). I haven't changed any setting but since yesterday I realized the Update Manager is not working. I tried different servers and results were the same. It seems the packages are available in the server (checked by firefox), while Ubuntu can not find them. As I am using Bell-Sympatico as ISP, I am not behind any proxy.
I was trying to update my system and got the following message.
Failed to fetch [URL] Something wicked happened resolving 'security.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
Is anyone else having trouble...I'm getting a ton of "Failed to fetch..." errors while updating. The site itself is working fine. No news here [URL]. Normally I wouldn't be concerned, however this happened right when I modified my sources so I'm hoping I didn't mess something up.
