After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I have just wiped my whole hard drive to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu on it, and now as soon as i power it up it passes the POST screen and black screen shows up with a flashing cursor. I bliv it should say no operating system and pick the USB which has Ubuntu installation on it.I have formated the hard drive to NTFS, the system is Samsung NC10.

From that moment when reboots it returns the full symbol of fedora and then the screen becomes black with white letters. I couldn't login ever again. I am new in Fedora, i don't have a backup of my files and i cant't work. I think that this could be a command line or something like this. Is there any possibility to login even once to copy my files to another disk and then to setup Fedora again?

After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.

View 8 Replies View Relatedi thought i would give ubuntu 10.04 a try. So i downloaded the iso twice from two differant sources and burned to 2 diff dvd with diff burners and get the same problem. When i boot off of the disk i get the menu but whether i choose install are run live cd it just sits there for a sec are 2 then goes to black screen with flashing white bar in upper left hand corner and thats all it does. even tried my 9.10 disc which i know works. but it does the exact same. I have purchased a new video card since i last ran ubuntu and its the nvidia gtx 260 core 216. would that be whats causing my problems?

I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.
I was playing Minecraft last night when the screen went black. This is apparently a known issue when you're using the wrong java version or something, and I've gotten this crash in the past, but I've always just restarted to get my computer back to normal. However, when I restarted my computer, the monitors would not get any signal from the computer. They just stay black. I tried restarting, shutting down all the way and turning it back on, and nothing works. The computer just stays completely black.
I tried turning on the computer then SSHing into it, but it's not working. I'm not sure if I had it set to auto log in, so it might be that I'm not logged in, or it might be something more insidious, but as I can't see what's happening I don't know what the problem could be.
Once I installed it I've been having a problem where the screen flashes black for a split second. i looked up the problem and found this:I navigated to the directory it said, but I don't have an "options" file. What should I do? Are there any other fixes for this? It's quite an irritating problem.

I'm using debian for the first time and I recently downloaded the Debian Lenny 201 Live CD to test it on my old computer (I'm planning to use Debian 5.0.4). It has a Pentium III (550 MHz) processor, 192 MB RAM, 8 MB graphics memory, 20 GB HDD with a monitor supporting 1024x768 resolution. The problem is, after the booting is complete a blank flashing screen appears with a cross-shaped cursor in the middle. I continues and nothing happens. I tried with solutions like editing the entries with 'live xdriver=fbdev', 'live xdriver=none', and 'live vga=771'.

Installed some things, moved music over, etc. (Dual booting with windows vista btw) So I install my graphics card driver, (ATI Radeon HD 3200) and I reboot. When I click linux it goes to linux and windows 7 goes to windows 7. Now when I click Linux, the black screen you get at the beginning shows a - (dash) constantly flashing on a black screen and won't boot to linux. This is normal as it does that for a second then boots. Now its stuck on that flashing dash on a black screen and won't boot.

I did try booting to a LiveUSB in order to run update-grub, but then it occured I have no idea how to do this from a LiveUSB that will affect the internal HDD installation?
So I'm currently trying to reboot from Live USB, but that just seems to have locked up the PC on the white ubuntu logo. I'm afraid to hard reset it (been doing too much of that lately). How long should a Live USB take to shutdown? (been about 10 minutes so far ). It's not a persistent LiveUSB as far as I know, and I basically just booted to the desktop and then start the reboot cycle as soon as I realised I didn't know what I wanted to do .
I deleted both the partition with archlinux and the swap in order expand the windows xp partition. I am now unable to boot, just as gparted warned me. When I turn my computer on, it just goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore.
I cannot type anything, but cntrl-alt-dlt does restart. I have been attempting to restore grub and/or windows's boot method for the last 24hrs. My computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.

I have an old machine running Ubuntu 9.10 and XP.t is a P4 and Nvidia FX5200 card.Yesterday all of a sudden the screen started flashing black, the same type as when you install new graphics drivers and the resolution is changing. Only here it keeps happening over and over, the mouse isn't usable fully, the icons and menus are distorted, and I basically can't do anything.
I ended up reinstalling 9.10 and everything was working fine until I installed EnvyNG to get my nVidia drivers. It required a restart, and once I logged in the same thing started happening. So I said screw this, and installed 8.04. Yet even in 8.04, once I used EnvyNG to install the drivers, the same thing happened.A few other detailsP works fine, although one time a similar thing happened on XP (not as bad), and was fixed with a reboot.- This PC runs through a KVM switch, but I connected it directly and the same thing happens.I've found no help via Google. Sounds like a possible hardware problem, but it seems to work fine in XP and only acts up in Ubuntu once I install drivers.
I installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). this is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable
What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.
I have an intel atom board (D410PT) and I can run livecds, liveusbs and even boot a grub4dos stick without issue, but install any 10.4 ubuntu variant and all I get is a black flashing cursor.It appears as if there is a grub2 incompatibility with this board, which is currently preventing me running a full ubuntu on it.I tried struggling on with a liveusb system with a rw partition but it's just not feasable for a home server as the lack of swap just bogs the machine down all the time.Grub-legacy no longer appears to be in the repos and neither does lilo (yeah, I really am that old-school that I could cope with lilo if necessary).What can be done about a system that doesn't like grub2? (syslinux is fine, but requires fat32, grub4dos works but doesn't like ext3/4, isolinux works but I don't want livecd, I want full install!)

I've just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) and every time I boot i get a flashing screen. I didn't have any problems at all with the LiveCD. The graphics card and my wireless adapter worked out of the box. But after the install it won't work. I can choose the OS in GRUB and then there's a purple screen. After that the screen starts flashing and I can hear the login sound.
I have tried using "nomodeset" but that didn't work either. There is no flashing, just a purple screen all the time. But it was possible to enter tty. I also tried booting the Recovery Mode but it just loads and then a pink flashing screen appears.
The graphics card is a XFX Radeon HD6870 1GB.
I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. Every time I boot it up the screen flashes, like going off, then on again. It won't stop doing that. I can see the screen for 1 sec then it goes black, and keeps repeating this.
