Ubuntu Installation :: Gdm Login Fails 11.04?

May 1, 2011

After login-in with gdm, the desktop fails to launch.

I can only move the mouse, clicking does nothing, no hotkeys; no desktop.

All I can do is change to a TTY.

I have tried restarting the gdm service; this just lets me log in again to the same stalled desktop.

The panel at the bottom of the gdm doesn't list any sessions, all it has is universal access and the time.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gui Login Fails In 10.04 But TTY Login Works?

Jul 11, 2010

I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.

Debian Installation :: User Login Fails / Root Ok

May 26, 2015

Debian 8/Cinnamon fresh install. /home is being shared with two other OS's, Mint and openSUSE. At the login screen I enter my user name and password and the screen blacks for 1-2 seconds and comes back asking for user name and password. I can login as root. As root I can launch the Group & Users GUI and attempt to set the user's password, and pressing the 'change' button does nothing obvious.

I can set the user's password in a terminal, which reports success. I tried to switch users and login with the changed password and I get the same failure. If I try to login with the original password I get an incorrect password error, suggesting that the password is being processed properly and the problem is elsewhere.

On previous installs with Mate and the default desktop (Gnome) I didn't have this problem. So, the questions are: Is it Cinnamon? Is it an unlucky chance bad install? Config files are typically in /home, which is being shared with Mate and KDE, is this the problem?

Fedora Installation :: User Login Fails Completely?

Jul 23, 2009

Fresh install of Fedora 11 x86_64, ext4 file system, Intel Quad, 1 Tb disk

Went through install, defined mike as user with password

reboot, get graphic login (init 5); cannot login as mike OR AS ROOT!! (unable to authenticate)

use live cd, reset inittab to start at level 3

reboot, get user prompt on terminal at level 3

enter mike and password, system wait a minute or more, returns to login prompt (obviously timing out --- dbus problem???)

enter root and password, get in, issue startx

open terminal window, and issue "su mike" command, ten minutes later, finally get terminal with mike as user.

Use ctrl-alt-F2 to get a terminal, type mike, and password, no joy; login as root and type "su mike". Go back to Gnome screen at F7, so I can continue to type this , and check back at F2 periodically to see if "su mike" ever takes. After three minutes, still no joy. After five minutes, it worked. whoami shows "mike"

Ubuntu :: Taskbar Won't Show And Login Sometimes Fails?

Nov 22, 2010

I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10. Sometimes, on attempting to login, the screen resets and I'm brought back to the login screen (though I know I have the right login information). The only way around is to restart. Also, sometimes when I do finally get in, my taskbars won't even appear. The machine is an HP workstation x1100 with Pentium 4 and fairly old graphics card (using AGP). Is the computer just not compatible with linux?

Ubuntu :: Domain Login Fails On 10.10 Netbook Edition?

Dec 11, 2010

I did a fresh install of the netbook version of 10.10 on a Gateway CX2618. I ran all updates and then rebooted. I installed LWO 5.4 from the repository and joined the domain. I put in a kerberos realm (same as my domain) but I don't know for sure if I have a kerberos realm. I successfully joined the domain with the GUI. I rebooted, per instructions.

I tried to login with domain username and password (DOMAINusername). It takes a couple seconds to think and then kicks me right back to the GDM login screen. I have tried several times with the same login and have tried other domain users. It doesn't say "authentication failure" but I should have tried to use the wrong password to see if it would do the same.

I'm stumped. Is there a ppa I need to add? Is Likewise-Open supposed to work with the maverick netbook edition. I saw the previous notice on the Likewise site about OpenLDAP but I thought that was resolved in the updates and no longer in effect. Should I install LWO 6.0? If so, from where? From a ppa somewhere? From the Likewise site?

I can still login with a local admin account.

My ultimate goal is to automatically mount network windows shares for various students, based on their login credentials and using CIFS. I almost had this figured out before this fresh install.

Ubuntu :: Automatic Login Fails Due To Missing Information?

Jun 16, 2011

After changing my user's UID number with the "usermod -u" command or otherwise changing the login settings my computer no longer logs in automatically. I can login manually by selecting the "Other" option and manually typing in my user-name and password. However my user-name is gone from the list of users at the login screen or in the Login Screen Settings program.

Other than that my computer seems to function fine. My users details are still listed in "User settings".

Ubuntu :: Guest Session At Login Screen - Fails To Launch GDM

Aug 2, 2011

Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.

This needs to give a permission denied, or something:
Code:
cd /home/(admin account username)
ls

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.

One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.
The other method listed lower in the thread,
Code:
/usr/bin/guest-session
Seems to work, but upon logging out, fails to launch the gdm

Only way to restore is restarting the computer.

Server :: Login When Domain Controller (DC) Fails?

Jun 27, 2011

I joined my Ubuntu 1004 LST to Windows 2003 AD.

it always frozen my ssh login window when the DC crashes. when the DC crashes, the putty won't give me the password prompt and will go inactive directly after a while no matter what username(local or domain users) I give

is it possible to avoid to check domain users before it gives me the password prompt? or, we can make it to check if the user is a local user first?

Fedora :: Login Fails After Transferring Root Filesystem To Another Hdd?

May 20, 2011

I rsync-ed root fs as a whole to another hard drive. In grub.conf I changed kernel option

root=/dev/sda1 ---> root=/dev/sdb

After kernel mounted root filesystem on the new hdd and all services started I successfully got prompt to enter login and password. However after login I immediatelly logout automatically. Here is /var/log/secure output:

Quote:

May 20 23:53:18 localhost login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user alex by alex(uid=0)
May 20 23:53:18 localhost login: LOGIN ON tty2 BY alex
May 20 23:53:18 localhost login: pam_unix(login:session): session closed for user alex

What is printed before this:

Quote:

May 20 23:50:47 localhost pam: gdm-password[1469]: gkr-pam: couldn't run gnome-keyring-daemon: Access denied
May 20 23:50:47 localhost pam: gdm-password[1455]: gkr-pam: gnome-keyring-daemon didn't start properly properly

Neither of these quotes appears if the initial file system (not rsync-ed) is used as root fs. I guess that pam might use information of hard drive, for example, its serial number, and login is tied to a disk. Please, give me a suggestion how to get rid of automatic logout.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Login On 11.4 Fails (after Installing Patches)

May 22, 2011

I m try to explain the structure I tried to use here:Symptoms: Describes what is happening right now What happened: Describes the history leading to the problem My tries so far: Describes, what I did (so far in vain) to clean up the problem Questions: I already searched the forum (see "My tries so far") but missed to write down the URLs for the threads. (So they aren't mentioned under "My tries so far")

Symptoms: The system boots up ok, I get to the KDE login, but for both my user account and the root account, the login fails. After entering username and password a progressbar comes up. This gets to 3/4 (if I counted the steps correctly) then stops. If I wait for several minutes, the screen will finally just turn black. (It is *not* switched to suspend or somesuch by DPMS; I didn't wait for that turning black in all tries described below) I can login on a console into the system.

System Intel CPU Core2, E6750 Suse 11.4, 64 Bit (both original and backup system) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64 (backup system) / vmlinuz-2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop (original system) KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" (on the the backup system, because I don't know how it get the info as long as I can't login to KDE)

Debian Configuration :: Gnome Login Screen Fails To Start

Oct 6, 2015

Today I upgraded my system to the Nvidia driver 340.93 and 4.2.0-1 kernel on Debian Stretch.

While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.

When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.

From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:

Code: Select allOct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC org.a11y.atspi.Registry[1692]: SpiRegistry daemon is running with well-known name - org.a11y.atspi.Registry

I reinstalled the xorg-xserver and the nvidia drivers and I get the same behavior.

Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?

The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Fails Due To Full System Partition?

Oct 18, 2010

I have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.

Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

I'm using
OpenSUSE11.2 x86_64
KDE 4.3.5
Linux 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop
