Debian :: Console Login Displayed Before DM Starts

Aug 4, 2015

New to Linux in the last year, used Debian Wheezy off and on for a time - trying to build a system up from a minimum net-install, just to learn more about it.

I have a niggling little problem - either of understanding or configuration. I started with the min install and installed X using apt-get or aptitude. Then installed JWM, which I would start from the console via startx. I really liked this setup, since it was simple and I knew what was going on. This was all on Wheezy.

After the upgrade to Jessie (via dist-upgrade), I would get messages popping up "on top of" the console login when I booted. Stuff like "b43-loading firmware …" would pop up on screen while I was typing my login/password. This was kind of disconcerting (seemed like something must be misconfigured) but didn't effect functionality at all.

Eventually I decided to try a display manager, since that would (I thought) avoid the whole console login process and thus the weird overlapping messages. I installed LightDM through aptitude and it works great, but the console login is still displayed first (briefly, maybe 3-4 seconds) before the LightDM greeter takes over the screen.

It is there just long enough to confuse the unwary, who start typing their login name only to have the screen replaced by the LightDM login screen and have to start over. Obviously this isn't a big deal (everything works fine), but since the whole point of this project was to understand, I'm very curious if this is normal behavior (videos I've seen of folks installing Debian seem to show boot messages jumping straight to the DM without showing:

Debian GNU/Linux … tty1
debian login:

or if I've neglected to configure something that would allow boot directly into LightDM or hide the text console while LightDM loads or … something.

Fedora :: FC9: Forgot - Partition Doesn't Work - Can't Login At The LUKS Login After Grub Starts

Feb 15, 2010

My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Ubuntu :: GDM Login Starts And Then Goes Back To Login

Feb 7, 2011

I just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 this morning and after the upgrade I can't log in via GDM. If I log in it seems to work and the screen goes black, but then it goes right back to the login screen.I can't figure out what is throwing the signal, but the interesting thing is that if I stop GDM and log in on the console, I can run startx and my session runs fine (I'm typing this message from firefox). Any ideas on how to determine what is throwing the signal? I tried poking around in /var/log but I can't find anything that seems relevant.

Ubuntu :: GDM Starts - No Login Box - Can't Login

May 1, 2010

I was helping a friend of mine upgrade his system from 9.10 to 10.04. The upgrade went okay and he was able to use Lucid last night.

He has a dual boot with Windows 7, which was broken during the upgrade. I was able to help him fix that, using the instructions at [URL]

So the Grub issue is not the problem. However, after fixing his Grub install, he now cannot log into Ubuntu.

He selects the current kernel from the Grub menu, and the system starts up as expected. The splash screen that generally has the login box on it comes up - but no login box with user names and prompt for password never displays.

He can press CTRL-ALT-F2 and login from a terminal, but has no option to log into GDM.

I've gone through the usual dpkg-reconfigure gdm and had him reboot. Still no luck.

Ubuntu Installation :: NVidia 8600GT - Start In (Tty1) Login Console Mode

Dec 17, 2010

I tried most methods suggested on many sites to install drivers
## through the additional driver panel only
## through the Nvidia.run file I downloaded
## through the terminal using apt-get

All failed to start ubuntu gui it takes me to the console login and I noticed it says "saned disabled" edit /etc/..something. This problem made me install ubuntu again three times and every time I activate the driver then install the driver Nvidia.run or through apt-get and both leads to a black screen tty1 login. So what to do now I installed and removed many things and I won't reinstall ubuntu again. Also I typed compiz and this came on:

root@ubuntu:/home/sherbieny# compiz
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0".
compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :1.0
Launching fallback window manager. I want to install properly so that I can start normally and enable the extra visual effects and the custom effects. Please elaborate the steps clearly

New Info:
When I enter nvidia-settings : server X opens and says
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server. When I enter nvidia-xconfig as root and restart nothing happens and when I enter:
nvidia-detector it says none
and when I enter: nvidia-smi

Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 260.19.21, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 260.19.29. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
Failed to allocate an RM client
Could not allocate resources!
root@ubuntu:/home/sherbieny# apt-get update kernel
E: The update command takes no arguments

A new and very exciting error everyone now also the windows 7 that I have besides linux has also crashed and cannot open the login window. I don't know whats happening all I know is that few hours ago I logged in to windows normally now I cannot login to either one of them and the funny part is: I'm working on my thesis on this computer and I cannot work anymore and I'm supposed to meet with the professor on monday.

There is no notification of an error. It doesn't matter if I try the recovery console or safe mode there is the same issue when I try and login with this user. However, I can login with a different user open a console and su to that user that wouldn't login at the GUI.

Ubuntu :: Freeze At Login On Normal Boot?

Apr 16, 2011

Seems that I have been having a problem with the initial user login on Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook. Whenever I try and login the normal way (from standard gui login) my system comes to a standstill and I have to switch to command line (ctrl+alt+F2) and restart/shutdown my computer in that fashion. The only way that I can login and actually see my desktop without any hint of my system freezing up is by booting into the ubuntu recovery Console using the dpkg function to remove any broken packages, select boot normally (where I have to login through the command line), and manually startx.

Originally I was running an x64 version of ubuntu desktop 10.10 but I switched to an x86 version of netbook due to many incompatibilities in software and trouble finding x64 software for my system. When I was on Ubuntu Desktop I had a similar problem where it would freeze at login as well but I fixed it by removing compiz & compiz-core. I tried that with this version of the OS but had no luck because it said that compiz was not installed.

Not a major issue, just somewhat annoying that I have to resort to other means to login

PS: My computer is a Toshiba P500-026. Some stats are listed below in my signature if its relevant to my problem.

I was under the impression the Linux (in my case the Fedora OS) is very secure. However I've learnt with deep concern that that one can have access to the system during system startup i.e one can give various startup directives and bypass the normal login UI to have direct root access.

Is there a way to disble this so that the directives during startup are fixed and cannot be altered. I would like to make the system secure to the maximum extent possible.

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gui Login Fails In 10.04 But TTY Login Works?

Jul 11, 2010

I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.

Ubuntu :: Can't Login In GUI After Console Rebooting

May 4, 2011

I"ve started using Ubuntu 11.04 with my Intel iMac. Today I was playing EDuke32 on Ubuntu then the game got freezed, so I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 and it worked. I just logged in the console and typed;

sudo reboot

This actually didn't work, so;

/usr/bin/sudo /sbin/reboot

This worked.

After rebooting, I tried log in with the GUI login screen. However I just cannot login. After I input my password and press enter, login screen goes black out and comes back to the login screen. I also tried to log in from console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), and it worked. I can log in.

After execution of this command it prompted a process..it was downloading something..and i left the computer for an hour or so..when i return there was nothing on screen..so i reloaded the system..And after that when i try to login i get the error

"xsession: warning: unable to write to /tmp; xsession may exit with an error"..so when i googled for it i found its because there is no memmory in my /root ..so i tried login via console (tried ctrl+alt+f1..after the login screen appears..when i type ctrl+alt+f1 i get a black screen)..but nothings happening...
