OpenSUSE Install :: Login Fails Due To Full System Partition?

Oct 18, 2010

I have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.

Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

I'm using
OpenSUSE11.2 x86_64
KDE 4.3.5
Linux 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Login On 11.4 Fails (after Installing Patches)

May 22, 2011

I m try to explain the structure I tried to use here:Symptoms: Describes what is happening right now What happened: Describes the history leading to the problem My tries so far: Describes, what I did (so far in vain) to clean up the problem Questions: I already searched the forum (see "My tries so far") but missed to write down the URLs for the threads. (So they aren't mentioned under "My tries so far")

Symptoms: The system boots up ok, I get to the KDE login, but for both my user account and the root account, the login fails. After entering username and password a progressbar comes up. This gets to 3/4 (if I counted the steps correctly) then stops. If I wait for several minutes, the screen will finally just turn black. (It is *not* switched to suspend or somesuch by DPMS; I didn't wait for that turning black in all tries described below) I can login on a console into the system.

System Intel CPU Core2, E6750 Suse 11.4, 64 Bit (both original and backup system) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64 (backup system) / vmlinuz-2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop (original system) KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" (on the the backup system, because I don't know how it get the info as long as I can't login to KDE)

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Fails For Normal User In 11.3 - KDE4

Oct 4, 2010

I can't log into my normal user account at bootup; it just bounces back to the login screen.

However, I can log into the user's terminal window from the root account.

I've tried deleting and re-creating the user, but to no avail.

Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?

The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Log In File-system Is Full / Clean Up Any Unnecessary Files?

Nov 24, 2010

I can't login due to my file-system being full. I found the main area with the large usage. Var/log is taking 99.5% of my var folder. On a full file-system scan Var/log is taking up 85% of disk use. File-system capacity is 36 gig. Temp is cleared after each boot.

What can I do to clean up any unnecessary files. I can only boot in safe mode and have limited navigation skills. To get scan results I booted a live-disc.

Opensuse 11.2 gnome 64 bit.

OpenSUSE Install :: Login To X Session Fails After YaST Online Update

Jun 1, 2011

I got a workstation with openSuse 10.3 pre-installed. After I did the Online Update from YaST2 and rebooted the machine as requested by YaST2, the system came to fail starting up an X session.

Below are excerpts of the message appeared on the screen at the end of the boot process. (I transcripted it from the screen by hand.)

Code:

what is causing the failure of the X session and how to fix the problem? I would be glad if you give me any hints or pointers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Full Encrypted System (expected /boot)with The Best Possible Algorithm And Key Length?

Aug 18, 2010

but I wantto set up a new system with openSUSE 11.3 The system should be fully encrypted. I want to use the best possible encryption.1 I am not sure, AES 256 xts-plain is the most secure single algorithm, isn't it?2 Is it possible to use a cipher? 3 Which algorithm does the yast-installer use when I encrypt the whole system with a logical volume group?I have read this two articles:a) Encrypted Root File System - openSUSEb) openSUSE Lizards encrypted root file system on LVMBut I have to say that these routines are a little bit complicated in my eyes.Isnt there a easier way to encrypt the whole OS?I know there is a 64bit live cd available. 4 So the first description (a) is obsolete?5 How can I set up a (fully encrypted) system without using LVM?The hard disk layout should be done in this way:

/boot sda1
/enhanced partition sda2
/swap sda5

OpenSUSE Install :: System Reboot Fails During 11.3 Installation

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.

So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.

I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :

Memory tests are OK.

OpenSUSE Install :: Delete "vmkd" Files - Root Partition Full - Why

Feb 1, 2010

I had been copying "vmkd" files all of which are very large (11gig) each and later deleted them and it appears some I had deleted using "root" I reached a point when it couldn't do it and it said it couldn't because trash bin was full. Sure enough I found my root partition (20gigs) was full. I went root and emptied its trash bin which freed up about (4gigs) of space. I just set up a new system (11.2) on another drive and have setup it up with exactly the same programs as the system I'm having a problem with and the new systems root partition only has (6gigs) in the root partition. Question; how do I clean out my problem root partition?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Froze Now User Cannot Login

Jan 30, 2011

I was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.

OpenSUSE Install :: Back Up Entire System While Still Login Into SUSE?

Apr 28, 2010

Main reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.

Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Set Up System With Boot Partition On USB (pendrive)?

Feb 12, 2011

Note: I am doing such setup for the first time so I don't know if there is a problem with given opensuse version or problem with what I am doing. System: openSUSE 11.4 RC1

Desired setup: entire system except /boot partition on hard disk, /boot partition on USB (pendrive). Aim -- making impossible to boot from hard disk, forcing boot from the USB (please, don't question my aim, I am just trivializing the issue here to shorten the description).

Setup: I set /home and / partitions on hard disk (/sda), /boot partition on USB (/sdb), I selected the options to Boot From Boot Partition as well as Boot From Master Boot Record. Finally I selected Boot Loader Options and selected Set active flag in Partition Table for Boot Partition. I installed the system.

What works:

a) without pendrive inserted I cannot start the system
b) with pendrive inserted GRUB menu shows up and system is ready to boot

The problem: after initial starting, there is long pause, and system switches to text mode with error:

Code:
drive "/dev/disk/by-id/id_of_my_pendrive" is not found Since the console worked, I logged in, and yes, actually there was not such disk found. But the disk (pendrive) was there -- the initial booting took place not from void, but from it. So why it is not present? Out of curiosity, I pulled it out, and plugged it in back, now it was visible in "dev/disk/. Question: what should I change/tweak for correct booting the system from pendrive? Or is a bug in 11.4 installer? I would like to setup everything as it should be done -- I mean within installer.

What I found so far: Booting encrypted system from USB stick - Gentoo Linux Wiki it is similar problem to mine, but only similar. I have other symptoms.

Ubuntu :: Full Install To A New Partition Through The WUBI Installation?

Jul 9, 2011

I am running Ubuntu in WUBI inside Windows, my first question is, can you do a full install to a new partition through the WUBI installation? Or would it be better to partition the disk, and just install Ubuntu, then deal with the MBR issue (been a while since I had a normal install, maybe the boot problems are gone?)? And is there any actual advantage to doing a stand alone install, while still dual booting Windows? Is there any gain from it versus the WUBI install I am running now?

OpenSUSE :: Disk Full With Temporary Files - System Goes Slower

Jan 24, 2010

I am using OpenSuse 11.2 (64 bits) with KDE 4.3.1. My hard disk partition contains 3 areas : / + /home + swap. Frequently the / area is filling with, I suppose, temporary files until it is full (15 Go) and that in a very short time, typically about 5 mn. Then, these files are cleaned by the system, when disk space is needed I suppose. The point is that during this time, the system goes slower and slower until the "cleaning". That seems to occur only when Firefox (3.5.6) is running so I suppose that these files are temporary internet files.
