Ubuntu Installation :: Error - Execute Some Grub Cmds From Terminal?
Oct 31, 2010
I had hard drive = 2 partition, 1 being extended. I had two ubuntu instances+swap+fat on extended and XP on primary. I moved a partition = success. I create a new partition = success. I installed new ubuntu instance -> fail on restart->. I saw sector error on screen on restart. So, Grub has lost 1 existing ubuntu instance and could not create new entry for new ubuntu instance. Read on forum just boot from Live CD and execute some grub cmds from terminal?

Tried upgrading from 8.04 lts to 10.04 and it wouldn't work b/c of too many mods to my 8.04 system? So I tried a fresh install per usb stick. System kept locking up during install, as well as when I run it from the usb, I've since learned. graphics card? I can't log into windows either per the grub loading please wait error 15. I've googled & searched the forums & everything I've tried doesn't work, there were some possible solutions that I don't understand how to do. can't get to a terminal to check or modify anything. Hitting "e" at the boot menu does nothing. I don't know how to do anything from here! Compaq Presario SR5350, 2GB RAM, Dual Core Proc 2150MHz. Dual boot w/Vista, HDD is partitioned separately with Root, Home & swap. Also, sda5 or / has been formatted to ext4, still using grub 1.5.

how to migrate my whole server to larger hard drives (i.e. I'd like to replace my four 1TB's with four 2TB's, for a new total of 4TB instead of 2TB)... I'll post the output from everything (relevant) that I can think of in code tags below.
I'd like to end up with much larger /home and /public partitions. When I first set up raid and then LVM it seemed like it wouldn't be too hard once this day arrived, but I've had little luck finding help online for upgrades and resizing versus simply rebuilding from a failure. Specifically, I figure I have to mirror the data over to the new drives one at a time, but I can't figure out how to build the raid partitions on the new disks in order to have more space (yet mirror with the old drive that has a smaller partition)... don't the raid partitions have to be the same size to mirror?
Ubuntu Server (karmic) 2.6.31-22-server #65-Ubuntu SMP; fully updated
Code:
cat /proc/mdstat

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.
Code:

in partition #6 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I googled around and couldnt find what I was looking for. Maybe I used the wrong search terms, but whatever. I was wondering if there was a possibility to execute a series of terminal commands just by double-clicking an icon. For example, there would be an icon on my desktop, and if I were to doubleclick it, it would execute "cd ~/.wine2" and then "WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine2" wine program.exe".
I realise that most of you will probably go "duh, that's simple" or something similar, but I am extremely new to ubuntu, and dont know my way around yet.

having my data backed up properly, but it's also in different places (e.g. photos and music on separate flash drives), so I have a few rsync's that I can execute manually, drives are mounted. Unfortunately, it gets confusing very quickly, I'd like a simple bash script that goes something like this (this pseudo-code would be most like REXX):
pair.1 = (/dev/sdb1, /dev/mmcblkp01)
pair.2 = (/some/other/device, /yet/another/device)
for i = 1 to #pairs
[code]....
Seems simple enough, but I've never written a bash script and wouldn't know where to start.

I'm having Ubuntu Kramic Koala and i want to create a custom application launcher on the panel so when it is clicked it should open a terminal window and run the following command and then show the output for 5 secs and then closes the terminal... how can i do this?
Code:
cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode && sleep 5
the above command is what i want to be executed at time of running the custom application launcher. if i paste the command in a terminal, it will show the output for 5 secs and then terminates... that's almost what i want. what i exactly want is that, i want it to work like when i click on the shortcut launcher, it should open a terminal and then exectues that command, show the output for 5 sec, pause, and then exits the teriminal.

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:
Code:
This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

I created a new partition in Windows Vista which, after rebooting, screwed up Grub. I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.
grub>
I can boot the live CD and I have internet access with it, but I can not remember the terminal command to repair Grub. Can someone tell me this command?

I'm installing and configuring my first server using RackSpace CloudServers running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) and I'm now installing iRedMail. The installation runs successfully until I recieve this error:
Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: mysql-server-5.0: Depends: mysql-server-core-5.0 (>= 5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages < ERROR > Installation failed, please check the terminal output. I understand this is telling me there is some software that iRedMail (or something iRedMail is dependant upon) that needs installed. Is this correct? And if so, what is i needing installed and how do I do that (aptitude install example-package?)?
