Ubuntu Installation :: Custom.conf Causes Crashing In 10.04
May 6, 2010
I just installed Edubuntu 10.04 and Its crashed on me twice already (by comparison, I lost 8.10 only four or five times during the entire year and a half I was using it). The monitor goes blank, then produces odd color schemes and then loses the signal altogether, eventually rebooting. It seems to be somehow connected to a non-existent /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. Here's the output from syslog:
May 5 21:16:44 rishon kernel: [ 9036.624038] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
May 5 21:16:44 rishon kernel: [ 9036.624057] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000000

I have just installed the new version 10.04 of xubuntu but I cannot enable xdmcp.
1) the gdm.conf (usualy in /etc/gdm/) is missing (where is now this file?);
2) the custom.conf apparently don't work;
3) the remote tab in login windows are missing

I want to modify a file like /etc/gdm/custom.conf from the shell or a script.
# GDM configuration storage
[xdmcp]
[debug]
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true;
AutomaticLogin=username;
But the idea is that I can add a line to a section and it check if the section is defined, (add the definition if not), the property is defined, let it undefine (erase the line), (and delete the section header if there is no property defined), etc...
I didn't find anything except gconftool-2 but it do not explain how to modify other files. (there is a shema file there).
there isn't a program/script to achieve this, but can easyly be made for every config file, If someone do something like that, with a little database of which markup use each file, it could become really popular.

Slapd is up and running perfectly well, and I can add and remove entries without a problem. My OS is the Ubuntu based Mint.
So I was hoping for someone to give me a nudge in the right direction for doing this without a slapd.conf file, or directions for how to force slapd to pay attention to a slapd.conf file whose location I specify.
I've tried messing around with /etc/ldap/ldap.conf to no avail, I've tried just putting in a custom slapd.conf file but slapd doesn't pay attention to it.
And to the best of my knowledge I can't find anything written on this specific topic. I can find plenty on slapd.conf's, but that's just taunting me considering I don't even have it on my system.

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :
Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds
The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

I'm very new to Linux and Ubuntu (about 2 days) and am having a hard time getting Ubuntu to work. I'm not completely sure that I'm posting in the right forum since I have several issues. I can't tell what's causing what.
I'm using the wubi installer for version 10.10 (i386 - 32 bit). I have an AMD 64-bit, but the wubi installer for that only crashes when I try to boot it the very first time. I get a blank screen and my tower is silent. Version 10.04 does the same. Version 10.10 is the only one that gets me somewhere.
So, I installed ndiswrapper and the proper driver for my USB adapter. Now I have 2 main problems:
1). the most relevant to this board is that when I use the update manager to get all 135 updates, I'm prompted to reboot to complete the installation. When I do that, i get the same blank screen and silent tower treatment. Oddly enough however, when I went back to windows, uninstalled ubuntu, then reinstalled it again using wubi, the update manager said that I already updated an hour ago (!?!?.. I assume it's still reading the old files from the previous install attempt). Unfortunately I messed it up anyway trying to fix my second problem...
2). my internet connection fails here and there. I don't know if it's ndiswrapper or the driver or what. Once it fails, it won't reconnect. I have to go into ndiswrapper, delete the current driver and reinstall it. This has happened to me while on the internet (scouring these forums) and while downloading the updates and whenever it feels like it.
Also, the system does freeze up on me here and there as well. Sometimes when I'm using ndiswrapper. Sometimes when I'm authenticating myself. Sometimes in update manager and sometimes in synaptic. Right now it's working. But I haven't updated yet and I'm afraid to try.

How to install either Fedora 11 or 12 from the hard disk of this old ragged laptop? USB or CD installation are not an option, and since the documentation keeps crashing and I stagger saliently in the messy script that is hid behind the windows interface runtime gimmick, I would like to know which switches would make the rebooting operation take to reckognizing the linux package?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my netbook, and the preinstalled games work fine. But every game I've tried to install, SuperTux, SuperTuxKart, and Freedoom, specifically, crashes. I haven't tried any other ones because of this. They will start, and then I'll get to the main menu and choose to start a new game, and then the game just closes.
All the drivers are updated as of a couple weeks ago. I read something about disabling screen savers and desktop effects, but I already have all that done. Somebody also mentioning installing caffeine, but apparently, that just automatically does the same thing.

First said is the fact that I used Ubuntu 8.04 for over a year, alone on my PC, and there were no problems.
Few days ago I formated my PC, installed Win xp and immediately after I installed Ubuntu 8.04 from CD side by side with Win xp.
For few days everything worked more or less fine, but after few updates Ubuntu started crashing. The only way that I can work with Ubuntu is by choosing in the login menu something that is called Failsafe Gnome startup. If I choose this option everything works fine. I must add that I made no changes to my hardware except the fact that now I have Win xp installed with my Ubuntu.

I've created a USB startup disk under Ubuntu 10.04 lucid (Live CD), Ive selected the option to save system settings to the flashdrive with about 200MB usage, now that ive configured and customized the opperating system (on the flashdrive) I want to create a ISO from that flashdrive installation.
Once the ISO is created, I want to burn it, boot off the CD then create another startup disk but this time setting "Discard on shutdown" so no settings or files can be saved to the flashdrive, but my custom setup remains. "its for an internet cafe setup".
How do i recreate an ISO from the USB startup disk?

after upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04 fglrx is constantly crashing. it works with some applications such as the browsers chrome, firefox and other applications such as nautilus but if i try to view videos or even open another application i use often keepassx it will crash to a terminal screen.
ubuntu 10.10 is very unusable in this current state, is there a way i can easily revert to 10.04? i have tried the ubuntu provided driver after fully purging fglrx as well as the one provided by ati and to no luck.

I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:
In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line
Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf
However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied
It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.

I'm trying to set up samba. I am editing the smb.conf.master file, and then using the testparm -s "smb.conf.master > smb.conf" command to make the smb.conf file. I am running this command as root. However, the smb.conf is not updating with the changes I am making. Does anyone know why? It just stays the same no matter what I change. The only way to change it is to edit the smb.conf file itself.

Last year I installed UNR on my 7yr old daughter eeepc901. It came with XP Home but was always crashing and running slow. Since all she needed it for was browsing childrens sites and the odd email from myself i decided to put something better on there and in the end choose UNR.
Its been running great for, However I have now taken a new where I am now based in Germany. I have set her up with a skype acct and last night we managed a video call for a couple of minuets although I couldnt hear her very well (couldnt figure out how to get her to turn the volume on up her Mic) When I first set skype up i set it to auto login which when ever I used the laptop to test it worked fine.
However as I am now in Germany and not able to really help with the settings The first thing I thought of doing was to upgrade the version of skype her laptop is running. So I can go to skype and downlaod 2.1 beta 2 for linux would this be the correct version?
Also what I need is a set of instructions that I can give to either my 7yr old daughter or her mother (daughter is probably the better of the two with computers)
on how to install the new version. Mum is used to windows where she just double clicks an .exe file and follows the prompts.
Also where would I need them to look in order to get them to turn the mic volume up?

I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).
I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?

I have used nVidia my entire linux life (about 5 years clean and sober from M$). Recently, I have switched over to an ATI Radeon HD 5550 card. After many trial and error setups, I finally got the resolutions and screens set properly with a xrandr command, which I have now added to a shell script in ~/.kde4/Autostart. It has worked for me for a while now, but I really would like to get it set in the xorg.conf.d files so that I don't have to wait that extra few seconds after login for the screens to fix themselves.
Is there an easy way to take what xrandr does and export it to the xorg.conf.d files? If my video card recognizes my default monitor as DFP2 and the tv that I only sometimes use with this computer as DFP1, how can I ensure that the login screen for openSUSE/KDE4 appears on my default screen (an issue that drove me nuts a few months ago when I tried Ubuntu to see what all the fuss was about)?
My xrandr command that I use to fix it all is:
xrandr --output DFP2 --auto --pos 0x0 --primary --output DFP1 --auto --right-of
I am using the proprietary Radeon driver from the ioda repository. DFP2 is a monitor which has a optimum resolution of 1920x1200, and DFP1 is an 1080p HDTV. I can not reverse the output plugs for the screens even though my monitor is an HDMI monitor because I use the actual HDMI port on the video card to output audio to the television and the other plug is a DVI that I convert to HDMI for the monitor.

At work, we use custom Ubuntu installations, I create them by plugging the new hard drive to my computer and running some installation scripts, basically, these scripts debootstrap the hard drive and later install some additional packages and files. It works great for our needs.
But now, I think a CD or USB installation method could be a better option, and would like to get some advice on how and what tools could be of use for this.
I'm reading the Install CD Customization guide at [url]...DCustomization, and I think I can use it, but would have to remove a lot of packages (we use only the ones supplied by the "normal" debootstrap process and some other packages, mainly the X server and optionally FluxBox).
Are there other alternatives? Is there a tool that I could execute inside one of the already created systems that would allow me to package the whole system as an installation CD? Remastersys perhaps?

I would copy them onto here but have no idea how to get the info of the laptop. If there are any specific items needed let me know and I will type them in. This is going to be very annoying and I dont what to use the windows 7 thats on it.
Just for info I have just booted linux mint 11 and that booted and loaded ok. I will try and take a pic of the fedora error

Dell Optiplex GX260 (w/onboard Intel graphics) Original install was Ubuntu 9.04. Upgraded twice, first to 9.10, and 2 months or so ago to 10.04. Problem never occurred before version 10.04.
BUG HISTORY: Googling on this problem reveals that it has been around since at least Ubuntu 8.10.
I'll be working away and all of a sudden the entire desktop blows off the screen and is replaced with a console stuck in a loop. The last message I always see in the console is "Checking battery state", then the endless looping begins.
The only way out is CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+K (kills Xserver, I think) followed by CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+B (reboots system).
NOTE: If I attempt to restart Xserver, Ubuntu goes into an endless console loop with the same "Checking battery state" message. Does that help anyone figure out what's going on?
I have tried to remove any laptop program that manages power and they uninstall ubuntu-desktop. What gives with Ubuntu's GNOME being dependent on laptop utilities? I'm running a desktop and have no need of laptop utilities.
I have gone to the extreme of starting Ubuntu in Recovery Mode, dropping to a root shell with networking, then removing GNOME and Xserver completely and re-installing them both. The problem STILL occurs.
I have used the following commands to accomplish this:
This problem has made Ubuntu extremely unreliable, as it can crash at any time and DOES... MANY TIMES in a day!
