General :: Modify A File Like /etc/gdm/custom.conf From The Shell Or A Script?

Jun 22, 2010

I want to modify a file like /etc/gdm/custom.conf from the shell or a script.

# GDM configuration storage
[xdmcp]
[debug]
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true;
AutomaticLogin=username;

But the idea is that I can add a line to a section and it check if the section is defined, (add the definition if not), the property is defined, let it undefine (erase the line), (and delete the section header if there is no property defined), etc...

I didn't find anything except gconftool-2 but it do not explain how to modify other files. (there is a shema file there).

there isn't a program/script to achieve this, but can easyly be made for every config file, If someone do something like that, with a little database of which markup use each file, it could become really popular.

Ubuntu :: GDM Broken - Gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable To Load File '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No Such File Or Directory

Sep 1, 2011

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :

Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:

gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds

The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

General :: Create Custom Terminal Boot Mode Under Ubuntu?

Aug 5, 2011

I wonder if it would be possible to create a custom boot menu entry in grub under Ubuntu (11.04), that boots the system into terminal instead of the login screen.

The effect should be something like the root shell in (rescue mode) boot menu entry, one that gives me access to a root shell or a less privileged shell, without the need to select "root shell" explicitly.

If possible, I also would like to customize the shell started by, most preferably by specifying a shell script to run so that I can start something other than bash, like vim.

My intention is to create a "fast" boot mode to give me a usable system within seconds (to take notes, for instance) without needing to start GUI. Therefore, it is preferred that the silent option is turned on.

Note: There is a requirement: that no existing feature of the system is removed. That is to say, the gnome desktop (and Unity) should remain intact, and is only disabled when I choose this mode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Custom.conf Causes Crashing In 10.04

May 6, 2010

I just installed Edubuntu 10.04 and Its crashed on me twice already (by comparison, I lost 8.10 only four or five times during the entire year and a half I was using it). The monitor goes blank, then produces odd color schemes and then loses the signal altogether, eventually rebooting. It seems to be somehow connected to a non-existent /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. Here's the output from syslog:

Server :: Debian: Custom LDAP Schemas Without Utilizing Slapd.conf?

Mar 1, 2010

Slapd is up and running perfectly well, and I can add and remove entries without a problem. My OS is the Ubuntu based Mint.

So I was hoping for someone to give me a nudge in the right direction for doing this without a slapd.conf file, or directions for how to force slapd to pay attention to a slapd.conf file whose location I specify.

I've tried messing around with /etc/ldap/ldap.conf to no avail, I've tried just putting in a custom slapd.conf file but slapd doesn't pay attention to it.

And to the best of my knowledge I can't find anything written on this specific topic. I can find plenty on slapd.conf's, but that's just taunting me considering I don't even have it on my system.

General :: Missing Glyphs In Terminus Font - Setup A Fallback Font?

Jul 8, 2010

Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.

If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.

A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.

Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.

Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.

General :: Selecting A Font When Printing A Text File From The Command Line?

Jul 29, 2011

I don't understand why this is so difficult. In the old days, there was lpforms which allowed some formatting. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lp package.cgi-...-cgi?lpforms+1In the old days, lpr allowed you to select a font in the command line with -1=fontname. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lpr package.htmIn the old days, printers had fonts installed on them that you could access. Modern printers don't seem to have this. So now I still need to be able to select a font when I print certain text files from the command line but it seems this is impossible. I've been working with instances and lpoptions, which allows me to do a lot of other things I need like orientation and margins and even set the font size, but I still cannot choose a font other than the default.

Red Hat :: Create Custom RHEL5.4 ISO ?

Apr 19, 2010

I am in the process of creating a RHEL5.4 custom iso image with minimal functionality. Have gone through a lot of articles over the net and it seems that there are no proper documentation of this process as most of the utilities earlier are not supported.

Following steps were performed :

1. Mount the RHEL5.4 DVD ISO and copied all contents including .discinfo[very important] to a temporary folder [/iso/MODIFIED_ISO/].

2. Edited comps-rhel5-server-core.xml [earlier comps.xml] under /iso/MODIFIED_ISO/Server/repodata under the root directory to only include necessary packages.

3. Removed the unnecessary rpm's from Server directory

4. Created metadata of modified packages, goto root directory of copied folder [in my case /iso/MODIFIED_ISO] and execute :

5. Create the iso :

After performing the above steps, I tested the iso on a virtual box, but checking the error console seems that there are some errors related to dependencies.

Have written a short script to check for the dependencies for the remaining rpm's, executing "rpm -qpR <RPMNAME>" for all rpm's on an already installed box. This would list all dependency packages.
