Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Persistent USB Accessible From Windows

I want to create a combined portable Ubuntu / USB stick.For this I intend to install Ubuntu to my 16 GB USB Drive. I am going to install some rather big programs (Matlab, Maple...) and therefor, I think the 4 GB persistent space in different startup-USB creators are to small.Because of this, I want to install Ubuntu to the USB drive, to get full functionallity. Also because of the small USB Drive size, I dont want to create two different partitions. For USB Drive use, I want to be able to save files larger then 4 GB (ie. not FAT32).
How can I create a fully functional Ubuntu USB, that can also be accessed from Windows? I understand that NTFS and Ubuntu is a bad mix, FAT32 have file size restrictions, and Windows cant accesss ext3/4.I saw someone talk about installing Ubuntu using the 'install in windows' to bypass Ubuntu-NTFS problems, but the link was broken, and I could not see how it was done. I have tried to create a persistent live usb thumb drive using Startup Disk Creator, but have not had any luck. I have tried running Startup Disk Creator from Linux Mint 9 xfce (currently installed on my machine) as well as from live sessions of ubuntu 11.04 Beta1 and xubuntu 11.04 Beta1. When using Startup Disk Creator in Linux Mint, I am able to set the slider to choose how much reserved space I want, but when I reboot, the USB stick does not load, I get an error message about an unknown name in the file. When using the live sessions of ubuntu or xubuntu, the section with the slider to choose how much of the usb stick to devote to the persistence file is greyed out. I get the same result whether I choose the xubuntu iso or the ubuntu iso as the source disc image. I have used the same USB stick and Startup Disk Creator to make persistent live installs before - is there something about 11.04 that does not allow persistence?

I'm attempting to create a persistent live USB. My flash drive is 32 GB, so I plan on creating a 8 or 16 GB ext casper-rw partition for my persistence (as described here.) I would like to have the remainder of the space available as an NTFS partition. However, most of what I'm reading indicates that only FAT32 is possible for a bootable Ubuntu USB.
I've been told that if I simply installed to USB drive as if it were a regular old HDD, it would be bootable and I could simply format the rest as NTFS. I'm wondering if this is true and why all these utilities I've found (Linux Live USB Creator, Universal USB Installer, etc...) insist on FAT32. Persistent (>4GB) bootable usb, with the rest of it a windows-recognizable NTFS partition?

My hardware works fine with all versions of Ubu and Deb so there are no driver issues, simply the question of adding persistence to the stick

Yes, I know, I know, there are lots of instructions out there on how to create a persistent Linux USB drive. However, I've been having a really hard time finding if it's possible to create the WHOLE thing persistent.For example, I want to turn my 8 GB thumb drive into a portable Debian Squeeze where I can install (persistent) apps and make root-level changes to the filesystem. I have a website on a standalone Ubuntu server (using virtual host). I can access the site from 3 different Macs using Safari, Firefox and Chrome. I can access the site from my Mac using virtual Windows XP Pro in VirtualBox. But I cannot access the site from any Windows machine on the LAN, and it's frustrating I cannot get to it with name resolution nor with IP address.Here are some of my related configs:

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and have 5 shares that I have setup for Samba (assume names of share1, ..., share5). I find that shares(2,3,4) are accessible from my MS Windows system, but the share1 and share5 are listed but Windows gives an error accessing them that I may not have permissions.I have reviewed the sharesve the same owner, group, and permissions.Is this a known Samba bug or configuration issue? We have about four workstations and a server. What we need is authenticating with the server, and when you log on, you should see your own desktip and documents idnependent on which workstation you use. We have an existing Windows 2000 network that I am trying to add an Ubuntu 8.04 server to. I have put links into the windows domain DFS to the linux machine's samba shares.
The shares work fine for local users that are physically on the same network (192.168.0.X). Remote users from other offices or dialing in with a vpn client can not access the these particular folders off the DFS. However, they can map them directly from the ubuntu server.

In windows 7, I had 5 partitions on a hard disk: C, D, E, F, G . I installed Scientific Linux 5.0 on C partition and it removed Win 7 . It's graphic mode didn't work, also I couldn't access to the other drives. I replaced it by Fedora 13. I can work graphically Fedora but when I mount the other drives, just D drive is visible! Is there any solution that I could access to the data on other drives? By the way, the following is the output of fdisk -l .

I've been using it for a couple of years, it has been mounted various ways and into various places, for the past year under Suse 11.2
Suddenly I discover that it's not accessible in Windows anymore. Drive gets an assigned letter but can't be opened. Tried on Windows 7 and Windows Xp.
This is the current fstab line:
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Seagate_FreeAgentDesktop_3QK0A0N7-0:0-part1/home/stan/Seagatentfs-3gdefaults,locale=en_US.UTF-800
Drive is owned by the root but permissions are set for everybody.
This is ls -l line for it's mount point

Another weird thing about it is that if I try to copy a folder into it Dolphin gives me "can't create directory" error and then hangs. If I restart Dolpin I see that the folder has been created just fine and I can copy anything into this new folder without any problems, including creating any sub-folders.
That weirdness doesn't exist if I run Dolphin as a superuser.
I would create a separate thread for this issue if there's no connection.
For now I believe something screwed up the part where Windows reads what file system it is.
Is there a way to "unscrew" it and make sure that NTFS looks ok to Windows, too?
Backing up 750 GB drive and reformatting it is not an option in the near future and I occasionally need to take the drive and plug it into friends' Windows.

I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

Ive installed and have up and perfect a copy of ubuntu, thing is i need windows for recording and xna, i want to make a installer from usb as i havent one cd or dvd i can use for installing and all the quick fixes seem to be either in linux to make a linux usb installer, in windows to make a linux usb installer, or windows to make a windows installer, but i cant seem to find one for linux to make a windows installer, as in i would like a linux program to create a bootable usb of windows of a iso i already have.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on my sisters computer which I am borrowing until my laptop gets fixed by Dell *sigh*
The only catch was that I had to remove the virus thats been plaguing this computer any means necessary my plan was to delete the windows 7 partition and put Ubuntu in its place temporarily.
My sister didn't have the Windows 7 DVD that was given to her *sigh again* but she did still have the key labeled on the side of the machine. So my plan than included to download that .iso of Windows 7, and then use setup.exe.

I've shrunk my Windows partition to ~200GB and made ~100GB of free space for Ubuntu BUT .. it doesn't allow me to create a new partition there as I already have 4 primary ones.Since all of the given partitions ( including Recovery and Tools ) can not be touched ( removed ), I have no idea on how to solve this ..

I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu or Linux Mint.
In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.
how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).
fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

My network comprises three PC's .... Windows XP, Windows 98SE and Ubuntu 9.04 running SAMBA. All PC's are configured WORKGROUP=WORKGROUP. The network connection To/From XP/UBUNTU via SAMBA Shares works perfectly OK. However, despite scouring all forum information regarding changes to Win98 ENCRYPTION, (Registry change re: DWORD "EnablePlainTextPasswords"), the Win98 PC refuses to connect to UBUNTU. The UBUNTU PC can conect to all the Win98 shared folders OK. I have disabled my Linux Firewall (Firestarter), I have run SMBCLIENT to check the user password for Win98 and it is validated OK. The Win98 error message is ....
"\Inspiron 510m is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make Sure you typed it correctly and try again."
