First I tried to create a new partition within windows but Ubuntu never liked it. Finally I just went to intall it on the whole hard drive and it froze during the who are you screen trying to get a time from the network time server. I read something that said restart and now I cant boot my laptop

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 11.04 on my sisters computer which I am borrowing until my laptop gets fixed by Dell *sigh*
The only catch was that I had to remove the virus thats been plaguing this computer any means necessary my plan was to delete the windows 7 partition and put Ubuntu in its place temporarily.
My sister didn't have the Windows 7 DVD that was given to her *sigh again* but she did still have the key labeled on the side of the machine. So my plan than included to download that .iso of Windows 7, and then use setup.exe.
I've shrunk my Windows partition to ~200GB and made ~100GB of free space for Ubuntu BUT .. it doesn't allow me to create a new partition there as I already have 4 primary ones.Since all of the given partitions ( including Recovery and Tools ) can not be touched ( removed ), I have no idea on how to solve this ..

I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.

On my Linux system, I want to create a symbolic link to a folder on my Windows 7 partition formatted FAT32. I use:
sudo ln -s /media/OS/Users/dennis/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft ~/.minecraft
However, I end up with a file in my home directory called .minecraft and when I try to access it, I receive:

I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.
then have a dual boot option to pick wether to load xp or ubuntu ,I want to make sure I can install ubuntu and get it working correctly IE loaded all drivers and install a media sharing device to view on my xbox 360 and install firefox and utorrent , This is basically just a media machine to do everything on my xbox 360.
I dont want to install it from scratch in case there is a problem then I just set myself up for a bunch of work to get it running correctly again.
Currently, I have a full install of Ubuntu, but I would like to create a partition for Windows. I only have 1 MB of unallocated hard drive space, but I do have a 227.13 GB partition, only 6.48 GB of which is used. If I create a partition table, will my computer become unbootable? And if so, is it possible for me to use the Disk Utility to re-format my hard drive to NTFS so I can completely reinstall Windows instead?

I created a ntfs partition, will windows boot on this. When i tried it before it said didn't recognize file system so I deleted the linux file system and created a ntfs one. Is that all?

Long story short, someone repaired my brother's computer and set a password on his account, now we can't get in and can't contact the person who set the password. Is it possible to create a Windows XP user if I have access to the windows partition, from a linux partition or pendrive, for example TinyCore?

I opened Dolphin as root and changed the permission rights of this windows folder so that all groups and users can view and Modify content. But when I try to create something I get the message access denied, "check your permission rights". And how can I change these permission right for my user in console mode?

I have to rehash some of my old skills that I have forgotten in the past several years..I installed 11.3, everything is working fine. However, I just releazed that after I installed it, I used my whole partition (Not Windows 7, or I would've been in hell). My Windows 7 is in Raid 0. My second HDD is 1 TB and 11.3 is on there. So, how can I trim down let's say 100 GB and just give the rest to Windows (800gbs). I need that much because I do editing for videos, etc. So, once again, how can I trim my partition and use it for Windows 7.
View 7 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".

I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.
i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
I have an Acer Aspire Netbook running a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu Netbook Version (Lucid Lynx if I am not mistaken?) Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my girlfriend's lenovo using a live disc. First we tried it out to show her the wireless would work fine (her previous lenovo was not ubuntu friendly at all). She's interested in keeping her windows 7 partition along with the lenovo recovery partition, so I tried doing a dual boot install. I manually moved the cursors setting the disk space on each partition, and we allowed Ubuntu to do the rest. Much to my dismay, the installation failed.
I've done some reading over the internet, and I think in our case it would be best to use a Wubi installation. We're interested in using 10.04, so where can we find a wubi installer of Ubuntu 10.04?
Also, any ideas why the installation might have failed? The iso was downloaded off the ubuntu main site, and we burned it using infrarecorder.
I am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition.These are my hard drive partitions:

The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause?Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.
I installed XandROS on my vista machine. I can access the Windows partition from Linux but in Vista I cant see the Linux partition...is there anything I can do about that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was a Jaunty user and then updated to Karmic. Wireless went from being sporadic in Karmic to non-existent after I tried the wrong fixes. I've changed so many settings and tried so many fixes that I don't know which way is up with the wireless. I'd like to start from scratch. If I install from CD, will it just write over my current ubuntu partition? Will the contents of home stay intact or will everything disappear? Do I have to create a new partition?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running a dell studio xps 16 computer with windows 7. Im now trying to install a dual boot with ubuntu. My problem is that ubuntu refuses to create a new partition, claiming that i already have 4 main partitions. According to any partitionprogram run in windows I only got 3. It looks likt this in Gparted (from live cd):

The 40 mb partition is probably for some dell recovery stuff. The 100 mb partition is some windows 7 backup, it is also flagged as "boot".. The 87 gb partition is my main windows 7 disk. I have no clue what the 797.5 KiB is for. It dosnt show up anywhere when looking at partitions in windows. I also tried deleting it from ubuntu (live cd) and then booting windows again, and when I booted ubuntu again it was there even tho i deleted it last time. What the hell is this? Can I just delete it and move on with installing ubuntu? Or should I instead delete the fat16 system reserved partition?
So I was just partitioning my hard disk to get it ready for installation of multiple Linux distributions and that's where it happened. I booted up my notebook using an Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Live CD and used GParted to partition my hard disk.
First, I created an extended partition that would cover my whole hard disk (don't worry, I backed-up everything twice and stored it on my server). Then, I decided to skip the first GiB of my hard disk and started creating multiple ext4 partitions (10 GiB each) and labelled them so I'll be able to tell which partition contains which distribution later on. When I was satisfied with the result, I created multiple 100 MiB ext4 partitions at the very beginning of my hard disk (the first GiB of unallocated space, remember?) which I'm planning to mount as boot partitions for each distribution. But, when I successfully created 16 logical partitions in total, GParted refused to create a 17th partition, let alone an 18th and so on...
Now my question is: is GParted unable to create more than 16 partitions on a single hard disk, or is it a known fact that an extended partition cannot contain more than 16 partitions (so that it would be wrong to blame GParted for this). So, is it possible for me to create more than 16 partitions using a work-around or manually partition my hard disk using the terminal, or should I not create as much partitions on my hard disk?
As mentioned here I am planning on installing with encryption. This involves using LVM in the partition scheme.

However, I notice that GParted doesn't seem to have any support for LVM, which is going to be a pain in the rear if I subsequently try to add Ubuntu to the Mandriva boot setup.
The problem I have with DiskDrake (Mandrivas partition editor) is that it only seems to be able to put partitions at the beginning of the drive and it doesn't seem to be able to move partitions. e.g. if I want to create a new partition at the end for swap and leave some unallocated space in the middle for my future Ubuntu installation I am stuck. GParted allows me to create at the end or effectively move it by resizing the beginning and end of the partition.
DiskDrake allows me to create and edit LVM partitions.
Is there perhaps another partition editor that does both? Or maybe a development version of one that does it? Or some option I am missing?

I've created a bootable USB with UnetBootin from Windows XP. Installation is perfect until I try to create a new partition. I mean, I want a dual boot with Windows and I've edited a NTFS partition to get free space (30 Gb). This free space is not formatted. When I put the cursor on the free space, "New partition" button is disabled. That means, that I can't create swap or none of the required partitions I need to install ubuntu.
There is more, I used the same version of the installer in a CD when I installed Ubuntu in my desktop computer. There were no problems and installation worked! Now, I have 30 Gb of free space that Windows can't see... and I can't edit it for Ubuntu... Does anybody know how to solve this? I really want to install ubuntu because I need it for University.
