Oct 13, 2010i have upgraded my ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 with network upgrade.but plymouth boot screen does'nt change and it's still the purple one for 10.04.

May 2, 2010I'll say up front I'm still new to Ubuntu, so if I've missed anything obvious please forgive me. I chose to upgrade my 9.10 installation to 10.04 via the update manager. Especially since I was going to be gone for long periods of time, this seemed like a good idea.
Downloading went fine, but I had to leave for a two day trip once I clicked install. When I returned, I noticed the machine was still on the purple loading screen with four dots. When I shut it down and rebooted, it got to the same screen. Pressing escape to show the text behind the screen showed two fails and one oddity:
(1) Setting sensors limits "Rather than invoking init scirpts through /etc/init.d, use the service( utility, e.g. service S49console-setup start
Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an upstart job, you may also use the start( utility, e.g. start S49console-setup start: Unkown job: S49consile-setup"
(2) Starting VirtualBox kernel modules No suitable module for running kernels found

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck At Boot Screen After Upgrade To Lucid
May 28, 2010I did a clean upgrade to lucid 10.04 from Karmic 9.10. After the installation, the boot was stuck at the purple screen with red and white dots.I did this on Dell XPS M1530 laptop and there was no problem in Karmic.
1. I found a temporary solution. After being stuck here, I simply go to tty1, login and startx. Now, I could work normally but if I go to tty1 and then to 'Ctrl-Alt-F7', I could still see the purple boot screen whereas 'Ctrl-Alt-F8' brings me to the normal GUI. How do I get rid of this purple boot screen ?

2. Remove 'quiet splash' and instead use 'nomodeset'. When I did this, I got the black screen with the messages during boot but it still got stuck. Importantly, there was no login prompt at tty1 or other ttys. Some messages towards the end where boot got stuck are below. Please help as I did like a fix to this.
Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To FC13 - Initial Boot Failed - Just Blank Screen
Sep 19, 2010I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.
I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.
At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.
The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel

Jul 24, 2011i used to have 9.10 but now upgraded to the latest version. Back then I changed the background to full black for both the preboot screen and login screen.Now after upgrading it changed it to the purple color screen. I am wondering how I can change back the background color?

Apr 7, 2010Last night I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 in search of faster internet (which I got by the way), but now whenever I try to boot it goes to a blank screen for about 10 minutes befor going to the desktop. Its completely blank and has no cursor or anything. It's a huge problem and I could really use some help. 9.04 never did this.

Aug 3, 2011I have a Dell dimension 8300 dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I installed BURG on it since I didnt like the text grub style. Problem is I cant change the splash screen no matter what I do, or changes I make. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my video card is an Nvidia card.
Originally the splash screen was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and some dots on it. After installing the plymouth themes, now it has changed to a blue screen with Kubuntu(?) on it... Id like to know whats wrong and how can I change the splash screen?
UPDATE: Ok I went to synaptic and saw plymouth.kubuntu-logo and kubuntu-text were installed and enabled (had litle ubuntu logo to the side). So I removed those 2 files then did a reboot. Now im back to the purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and the dots but I still cant change the splash screen...

Apr 3, 2011I think many are having this problem...9.10 works on the PC , but NOT 10.4 LTS or 10.10 ...all I get a black screen on boot up, although it "sounds" like its working in the tower..,,, QUESTION!!...is there a simple download ANYWHERE that will fix this as I am only a newbie Linux end user with average PC skills.....also ...Will there continue to be security updates for (9.10) after this April 2011, or must I find a way to upgrade in order to have a secure Distribution ..I have a Compaq Presario SR1901WM with HDA Nvivia.

Feb 25, 2011Using LTS 10.04. How do I change my boot splash and login screen? (in the past I would). It was just system->admin->login screen but all the options are missing! See attached screen shots.

May 2, 2009I have just finished updating my older box from 8.10 to 9.04 and installing a bunch of programs. I had shut it down several times between sessions but when I unplugged it and moved it, it fails. It goes fine through the BIOS and GRUB (I think) but then when there is a screen of text it flashes to black several times and then displays a screen that looks like static with "Ubuntu" barely visible in several places.

Feb 15, 2011I just recently installed updates from Ubuntu and the system is hosed. I get the Ubuntu screen that flashes real quick then it goes to the Nvidia like cursor. I am pretty sure something is hanging up on startup. I cannot get to a console, cannot do anything but reboot with ctrl alt del. Then I get the briefest flash of the screen but not long enough to see where it was hanging up at. I ran the same updates on this machine, if I could get the old school informitive startup screen instead of the windows like tell you nothing start up screen I might at least know where to start looking. Right now I have zero clue as to what the updates broke. I cannot even get to log files as there's no console, no ssh, nothing. version is Ubunto 10.4 LTS.

I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:
HP compaqnx9000
Mobile Intel Pentium(R) 4-m CPU 2.20 GHz 219GHz 704MB RAM
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580A
Radeon 1GP 340M

Jun 1, 2010After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I now face the known problem that my machine tries to download everything from archives.ubuntu.com although it has all been moved to old-releases."If you have this problem, you could change your /etc/host file to point archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases. Do this by running host old-releases.

I have tried typing that information into the command line, with no success. I opened the /etc/hosts file in emacs (using sudo) but did not see an obvious place to impliment the fix.
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot After Zypper Upgrade / Showing Black Screen?
Apr 14, 2011I could upgrade openSUSE 11.4 on my desktop but when trying to do the same procedure on my girlfriend's laptop, after the zypper update part (and the reboot asked), now we can get it to boot.
After selecting suse from GRUB it shows some code (too fast to be read) then black screen forever. I erased the VGA option before booting and now it gets stuck in

If I choose to follow this upgrade path, will my existing user settings such as nautilus shortcuts, wallpaper and other personalised settings be changed or reverted to default in any way?
Or will the upgrade execute, and leave everything looking and working exactly the same?
