Ubuntu :: 9.04 Upgrade Fails On Boot - Screen Flashes To Black

I have just finished updating my older box from 8.10 to 9.04 and installing a bunch of programs. I had shut it down several times between sessions but when I unplugged it and moved it, it fails. It goes fine through the BIOS and GRUB (I think) but then when there is a screen of text it flashes to black several times and then displays a screen that looks like static with "Ubuntu" barely visible in several places.
I installed 10.10 of the live boot CD. It said everything went fine, now when I go to boot into Linux it just flashes the underscore on a black screen. What do I do from here?
When I load Ubuntu, it goes to the desktop screen, shows my desktop picture, loads Pidgin which I have set to start on startup, loads Icons, and then the screen goes black. The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. This started happening after I tried fixing a bug with new drivers for my Intel 845gl video card. The instructions I followed are these:

I have tried some of the options in recovery mode from GRUB menu, none really work, except booting with default graphic configuration, or something similar like this.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an old Compaq desktop, and after working on it for a while, screen randomly turns blank, usually with flashing horizontal white lines. Can anyone help? Someone already told me to try memtest, which I already performed, but nothing happened.
I'm experiencing a sudden black flash before video play back with VLC. The whole 3 screens just flash black and come back, and then the video plays fine in VLC. This doesn't happen with other media players, such as mPlayer and Totem.
I'm running an XFX Radeon 5450 (ATi) with the propriety 10.7 drivers. Running 3 17" (1280x1024) in "EyeFinity". I've had a look on the unofficial bug thingy for ati drivers for linux, and there is a bug back from 2008.[URL]...
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, of tips to start looking to try and solve my little issue, I've spent hours and hours looking though xorg, syslog and other logs in /var/log/ and nothing seems to stand out.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 which I first upgraded 'over-the-air' to Narwhal. This completed with no errors. After reboot, the screen momentarily displays some icons before reverting to the background - this loops round every few seconds.I've subsequently tried installing with the CD which runs through with no errors, but does the same thing when it's finished - blink... blink... blink...
I think many are having this problem...9.10 works on the PC , but NOT 10.4 LTS or 10.10 ...all I get a black screen on boot up, although it "sounds" like its working in the tower..,,, QUESTION!!...is there a simple download ANYWHERE that will fix this as I am only a newbie Linux end user with average PC skills.....also ...Will there continue to be security updates for (9.10) after this April 2011, or must I find a way to upgrade in order to have a secure Distribution ..I have a Compaq Presario SR1901WM with HDA Nvivia.
I upgraded from fedora 6 to fc10 using a net-inst iso. Everything went great however when I rebooted gnome wouldn't start up and there were other error messages, however thats not my current question. I figured id login as root, I put my pw in and the screen briefly flashes and then back to login prompt. The flash is a message saying something about no shell. Same occurs when trying to logon to my main user account. I can boot to single user and see that all my partitions are there and the data is there. My password file has the shell at the end of the entries.
After doing a dist-upgrade today, my one year old install of squeeze will no longer boot. It stops with a black screen and has to be hard reset. Cant even get to tty1. The last line in dmesg is: cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain

I could upgrade openSUSE 11.4 on my desktop but when trying to do the same procedure on my girlfriend's laptop, after the zypper update part (and the reboot asked), now we can get it to boot.
After selecting suse from GRUB it shows some code (too fast to be read) then black screen forever. I erased the VGA option before booting and now it gets stuck in

I don't really have any Linux experience. But I wanted to try it out. Now I'm afraid I did not set this up properly. Grub gives me 3 options:

When I select <Other> to boot into windows... it starts to try to boot... but then flashes a quick blue screen & restarts. I tried to boot into Window's normal mode, safe mode, and command line... all just restart fdisk -l gives the following:
After tweeking some graphics settings, and replacing some hardware, ubuntu won't boot. Being left in the X session (CTRL + ALT + f7), it's what looks like a log:

^ and that's where it hangs. So I went into ctrl alt f1, and logged in with my user/pass, and did the command: startx the screen flashes, and brings me back to a failed to open devices report.

I tried re-installing GDM, but turns out that the PC isn't actually online, hence unable to install GDM after uninstallation. So I downloaded the gdm .deb, and tried to install it from a USB flash drive, but I get dependency errors. I'm at a loss here, I could really use some help, this is the PC that has all my data on it, 450 GB +, I'd love to not have to transfer that over to a new installation!
I had Ubuntu Lucid beta 2 and had installed Lord of the rings online with pylotro which worked brilliant. But due to some problems with lucid i decided to reformat. I installed wine, winetricks, all the necesary files and went to install lotro that went brilliantly, set up pylotro that was fine, patched and just to be sure also installed the CLI client of lotro. Now when i start the client, it loads up everything so I can select realm, enter user name and password I select to login my screen changes resolution, the screen goes black it closes. Here are the results I get on both pylotro and the CLI installer...can anyone make any sense of the reason behind the crash?
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.
I was going to set up an ubuntu server, but ran into some issues. When I try to install ubuntu server 9.10, it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor as soon as I press enter on the menu. I've tried pressing F6 and editing options - noapic, nolapic, irqpoll, vga=[something...] and nothing worked. I then downloaded a standard ubuntu desktop cd, and the livecd works, and I can successfully start the install!
I've heard that I should probably use the server install if I want to use this as a server (which I do; webserver for a group of people, website, ftp, ssh.) I've also heard that it's possible to just install everything needed overtop of an ubuntu desktop base. What should I do? Are there other things I should try to make the server install work? Or is it not worth the effort, and I should just go with a desktop install and then work from there? tasksel? (It's a Dell XPS, the graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT).
I'm under Kubuntu 10.04 and I upgraded kde from 4.4 to 4.5. via apt-get. After KDM login, I got a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and active.

'm trying to duel boot windows 7 and ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Aspire 5736, but when I try to boot from the cd (which I burned with InfraRecorder) it first goes to a black screen with a blinking under score in the corner, then to a purple screen with a couple symbols at the bottom, and then the screen goes black and nothing else ever happens
I just upgraded to 10.04 on my laptop and after install, clean-up and reboot the screen goes absolutely black. The initial bios stuff is still there and the GRUB loader text. Then darkness without There is one way to start up and getting screen (which I'm using now). If hitting ESC in grub loader, selecting recovery-mode, selecting re-configure monitor, selecting start up in graphics-safe mode (this session only) it'll work. Other combinations, such as re-configuration and normal reboot or just graphics safe-mode does not work.The only real error message I have obtained is the following:(EE) intel(0): ch701x not detected, got 29, from DVOI2C_E Slave 234Given as pop-up dialogue when going into recovery-mode.My laptop is a Compaq Pressaro M2000. I can provide more details on graphics, but I'm not so fluent in linux, so I don't know what terminal commands to enter to get the right debugging information
after 11.04 upgrade my system starts and i hear the gnome start sound but the screen keeps black. I only see the mouse. I tried setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30 - without success.
After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e, 4 gig of corsair dual ram, ati 4850 graphics, onboard audio. ahci mode win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2, i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders, on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.
Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.
When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.
I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).
Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?
Yesterday I attempt to use update-manager to do a distribution update. all was going good. i went to the kitchen to get a coffee and returned to a black screen with no cursor. the install couldnot have finished as it was still downloading updates i believe.
on reboot gnome did not respond so my last resort was to use kde for the time being. by running update-manager through kde I successfully updated to ubuntu 10.10. After completion of the update i restarted and gnome still had a non respinsive black screen on login.
I upgraded my machine to F15. I was asked to reboot. From that point on, the system will not boot. I get to the blue screen with the 'egg', about 1/3 of the 'egg' turns white, then the screen goes black. No cursor, nothing.
I hit shift to get the Grub menu, tried booting my old kernel. Same result.
I tried burning a F15 live cd and booting that, but I get a desktop background with no mouse, no docks. It doesn't seem to respond to anything I do. I can boot it in the "basic graphics" mode, or whatever you call it, but I would rather not overwrite my entire hard drive with a fresh install.
I have seen references to some kind of recovery mode provided on the live cd that might repair my install without wiping my data, but I can't find it anywhere.

I am getting a black screen on the latest kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20. My computer completely boots up, but goes black after a minute or two. For now, I am booting up with the previous kernel.
Yesterday I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.24-26-generic to 2.6.24-27-generic (I'm still using Hardy Heron). After upgrade I uninstalled the previous Nvidia driver installation:

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.
But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...
Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?
If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?
Recovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.
Got a black screen after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. My Computer is an Acer eMachines E527 [URL]
I) Just started Computer normally, using new Kernel and 11.04 then the screen became black as before. Waited until Harddisk (Light) wouldn't work too much and boot seemed to be over.
II) IN BLIND FLIGHT (without seeing anything, since screen is black):
1) opened the Terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2 2) typed my "Username" (enter) 3) typed my "Password" (enter) 4) typed "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" (enter) 5) typed my "Password" (enter)
III) Now it is not really satisfactory to do this over and over again each time restarting my computer. Is there any way to use a batch or use the grub to setpci ? I'd like to install 11.04 with an USB Stick on a similar computer - how do I setpci there?
