Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To FC13 - Initial Boot Failed - Just Blank Screen

Sep 19, 2010

I have just upgraded my FC12 installation to FC13. The initial boot failed (just blank screen). Second time I received 'selinux targeted policy relabel is required'. I let that run, but still the boot did not suceed.

I then went in to verbose boot and saw that the boot would hang at libvirtd. So I disabled libvirtd for anything above run level 1. Next boot failed at atd, disabled atd. Next boot failed at 'monthly Smolt checkin'.

At that point and booted in to single user mode and dissabled SELinux, thinking that was the cause of all the problems. That did not help.

The update process has also removed my previous kernels, so I can't test a different kernel

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To 12 From 11 - Screen Goes Blank With Alot Of Disk Activity

Dec 15, 2009

I attempted to do the upgrade from 11 to 12 with the Preupgrade Assistant. Unfortunatly something went terribly wrong. Everything went well, excluding the size of partition error, untill the reboot. I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

Fedora :: FC13 Freezes On Boot Up Screen

Dec 27, 2010

I'm a bit of a Linux novice but have taken the plunge and got a old Dell machine set up with Fedora 13, it works fine for the most part. If I can get it to boot. Whenever I start it up the tri-color boot bars go across the screen but seem to freeze at various times. Sometimes right as its getting started, other times it will go all the way across but never actually do anything. I can sometimes get it to work if I get into GRUB and try a different kernel version. Is there anyway to pull up a more informative boot screen or some other way of figuring out whats causing the freeze instead of just watching the progress bar?

Fedora Installation :: FC12 To FC13 Upgrade Woes?

May 26, 2010

Took an FC12 system to FC13 via 'preupgrade'There was a REALLY old version of gimp-print-cups in RPM, and the installer announced "a fatal error occurred". However, everything else seemed to download properly and I allowed the upgrader to reboot the system.

a) grub boots the kernel, then the kernel can't find root and panics. It does this because it can't root file system with root=UUID= kernel option. If I manually tweek the grub line to use root=/dev/sdx, kernel finds its root and boots up to the next problem.

b) GUI environment not launched. Init scripts die on "error loading modules.dep". Sure enough - one is not there. Ran "depmod" to generate it ,and rebooted. System reboots into GUI, where I login to find the next problem.

c) Evolution won't start. Reason turns out the evolution-data-server from FC12 is still present. Did a check on just how many other FC12 RPM's are present: 1100. Yeah - over 1000. About 850 of the FC12 RPM's also had FC13 replacements installed. Did an "rpm -e" on these. Also had to do some remove action on mkinitrd, nash, plymouth-scripts-0.8.0, and parted-1.9.0 as there are replacements for these utilities under different package names. That cleaned up the system some, to present me with the next problem.

d) yum package repository still linked into FC12. Removed fedora-release-12-2.noarch and then I could "yum install" evolution and a few other packages properly.

I've done one other FC12->FC13 upgrade today, and that went flawlessly. So, I think in general the upgrade works fine. It just looks like if preupgrade finds anything amiss, it doesn't take care of a lot of things and generally leaves you with an unbootable mess to clean up.

Other than nuking the system and re-installing 10.10 any constructive idea?

Fedora Installation :: Safely Remove Unsupported Packages After FC13 Upgrade?

Jun 2, 2010

I managed to successfully upgrade FC11 to FC13. While doing the post upgrade steps, I made a HUGE mistake. After identifying the unsupported packages, I used "yum remove package1 package2" command to remove the obsoleted ones without realizing the yum was also removing many FC13 packages! Here are the cmd sequence used:

# package-cleanup --orphans
...
# yum remove compat-db45-4.5.20-5.fc10.i386 flash-plugin-10.0.32.18-release.i386 gnome-spell-1.0.8-5.fc9.i386 ifd-egate-0.05-21.i586

[code]....

I simply typed Yes and left unattended for a few minutes after yum prompted there were # of packages to be removed as I blindly believed it would do the job. After returning to the computer, I found many installed icons were disappearing, the wireless suddenly turned off etc. I killed the yum process right away but it was too late.

-Is there anything I could do to undo the yum remove process?

-How to safely remove supported packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen After Upgrade Restart

Jan 22, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 8.04.x system. I ran the update manager to upgrade to 10.04.1 LTS. Everything seemed to run fine up to the point where it needed a restart. Upon restart, it spews out a stream of log messages, changes the font of the log messages already displayed, and then the screen goes blank and the system does not respond to keyboard or mouse. It appears as if the system is trying to set up the monitor and messes up.

If I ESC into grub after BIOS boot, I have the option of booting two different kernels: 2.6.32-27-generic and 2.6.24-28-generic. The original ubuntu 8.04 kernel was 2.6.24-24-generic(though I did do some updates might that be the 24-28 kernel?).

Booting the 32-27 kernel results in the behavior described above.

Booting the 24-28 kernel produces a stream of log messages that scroll past to fast to read and drops into ash. One of the last messages is: !ALERT /dev/disk/by-uuid/ xxxxxx does not exist -which is true because there is very little in the /dev directory.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Upgrade Seems Okay - Blank Screen After Reboot

Feb 11, 2011

I tried to upgrade Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade. The upgrade seem to go OK, I didn't see any errors. But when it did the final reboot all I get is a blank screen. I rebooted in single user mode and saw that /etc/rc5.d/S99local -> ../rc.local is the last script executed. I edited rc.local and added 'echo "got here"' at the end and rebooted. It did print "got here" so I know all scripts were executed for init 5, it didn't get hung anywhere along the bootup. Why I'm not getting the login screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen / Errors Trying To Upgrade ATI Catalyst Drivers

Jan 29, 2010

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.

I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

I don't know if this is a new video driver failure (its a pretty old laptop, theres no need for new drivers) or if its a grub problem. Since I can't get to a grub it goes BIOS>Purple 10.4>nothing and I don't get a terminal login, the laptop is now considered bricked. However I was okay with the install and was wondering if theres a way to fix it.

Fedora :: 11 Installation - No Display During Initial Boot ?

Aug 28, 2009

I am trying to install Fedora 11 on my HP Desktop (Intel P4 2.8 GHz) machine with 1.25 GB memory. It has 265 MB nVidia graphics card (6800 series).

When I try to install from boot from the DVD, it prompts to boot (in 10 secs). However after it boots all I get is a blank screen. I suspect this has something to do with the X display initialization with respect to the graphics card I have.

I had faced similar issue with other distros before (Ubuntu) but could manage to boot with some specific boot parameters for specifying x display driver settings at boot (vesa).

I recall Fedora has similar settings like xdisplay=vesa. But unfortunately this doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Sticky: Graphics Resolution - Upgrade / Blank Screen After Reboot

I have tried the tips, and to the best of my ability understand the later posts from the sticky post "Graphics Resolution" however I seem to keep reverting back to the blank screen. I did this:

5. Type "sudo reboot".

The above only works for some but not all, depending on what card you have and whether it actually is supported by additional drivers (proprietary). All at the moment, mostl seem to need "nomodeset radeon mode=X", where x= 0 or 1... Some ATI cards are not working with the current natty kernel, but are working with the older 2.6.37 kernel or the proposed 2.6,38.9 kerne (please see post 2)l Sometimes (rarely) it'll work but more often it won't, and in the two times it's worked I haven't known how to get it to remember the setting permanently- keep in mind I have no idea what that last paragraph about x= 0 or 1 means.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen On First Boot

Mar 22, 2011

I have a toshiba satelite pro laptop (can't think of the exact model at the moment) with 4gb ram + 320gb hard drive. i have been dual booting ubuntu for roughly a year, and throughout all that time windows has become less and less used, therefore last night i took the plunge, and went about installing ubuntu(10.10) as my main operating system and removing windows, i did this via a usb, using Unetbootin.

I used one of the .ISO's from the official ubuntu site, and went through the installation processall went well, no errors within the installation process, hard drives were partitioned fine etc, however when i've come to turn my computer on for the first time this morning i get a black screen with a blinking underscore straight after the toshiba logo flashes up and i get the choice to go to bios options.

If i do go to bios options my hard drive is listed fine, and if i try to boot from my usb again, it doesnt work, and attempts to verify dhcp and eventually tells me it couldnt find a boot file, my laptop however is plugged in via an ethernet cable. it doesnt work with or without the ethernet cable. i have tried leaving it for about half an hour and nothing has changed, i also can't boot to GRUB.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot: FC13 - Est4 - Ubuntu10.04 - Ext3 ?

Aug 10, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid formatted ext3. It boots with Grub (old Grub) in sdb6 (hd1,5) It mounts at /, and its partition, sdb6. is flagged boot.

I created a new partition for Fedora 13, 64bit. I installed Fedora in sdb8 (hd1,7), formatted ext4, and created a separate /home in sdb7, formatted ext3, so I might share it with Ubuntu, in sdb6.

Fedora installed with Grub2. It booted fine, and after adjusting references in fstab Ubuntu booted OK too, but rather roughly.

That is when I shifted the boot flag to the Ubuntu partition. So now the original Ubuntu Grub is handling boot once again. Ubuntu boots as before, but I can't get Ubuntu's Grub to boot Fedora. An earlier post suggested this code, which generated error 13, Invalid or inappropriate executable:

Code:

I tried the following code, pasted from the Fedora Grub, but it doesn't work either:

Code:

I've got alternative lines invoking the kernel, because someone had suggested omitting the direct reference to root= ....

Either way I get error 2 - Bad File or directory.

I suspect the problem may be that I'm booting Grub in an ext3 partition and trying to invoke Fedora in an ext4 partition. Does anyone know if that is the likely cause of my problem? If so I can reinstall Fedora formatted ext3.

Alternatively, can I create a Fedora /boot partition, and move/reinstall Grub there? Either way -- should I use old Grub, so both Grubs are the same?

Should I have assigned mount points to sdb8 (Fedora) and sdb7 (home)? Currently I'm not using sdb7 at all.

I'll attach a screenshot from GParted of my partitions.
