Ubuntu Installation :: Aplay: Device_list:235: No Soundcards Found

Feb 26, 2011

I lost sound after restarting, I had sound, then on my reboot... No sound. I tried to google the problem and ran the common tasks of removing and re-installing "alsa-base" and "pulseaudio" using apt-get in terminal. But after trying all this I have now lost the volume control at the top right of my screen I have no idea what the issue is, in System > Preferences > Sound I get nothing under Hardware, nothing under Input, "Dummy Output" under Output, and nothing special under Applications. Here is the results of commands in terminal which I have commonly see people been asked to do:

Code:

sudo aplay -l
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...

Code:

sudo find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd
/lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/updates/dkms/snd-hda-codec-idt.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/updates/dkms/snd-hda-codec.ko

[code]....

The only thing I think that could of triggered everything to mess up is some mods I made to to the alsa-base.conf file - What I did to it I can't remember, But I have tried to remove these two lines of code at the end of it, saved it, restarted my computer and still no audio. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) 64Bit Kernel Linux 2.6.35-22-Generic GNOME 2.32.0

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Aplay: Device_list:235: No Soundcards Found

Mar 6, 2011

I'm an Ubuntu newbie here, and I recently bought an ASUS N53JF-XE1 laptop, and after a new installation of Ubuntu 10.10, I don't seem to be able to get the sound working (neither from speakers, nor from headphones). I've been searching a lot of places, and with no luck and a lot of frustration, I'm coming here for a possible solution! According to "lspci -v", this is the info for my sound card:

Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 1113
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 3
Memory at d9c00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>

Using "aplay -l" gives me this:

Code: aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found... It seems to me that I'm somehow missing the drivers for my sound card. However, I don't know where to find the correct drivers or how to install them. I've been all over the alsa-project website, and I can't find anything useful.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Soundcards Disappeared After Update?

Mar 24, 2010

After having a bunch of trouble getting sound to work with 9.10, I finally got a system. After each linux kernel upgrade, I would just need to upgrade Alsa back to the latest version to get it working again.

A couple days ago, I noticed new kernel headers in the update package and was prepared to upgrade Alsa again. However, today when I went to do the upgrade I find that my soundcards are no longer available!

What can I do to get sound working again?

Code:
matt@matt-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/version

Compiled on Mar 10 2010 for kernel 2.6.31-20-generic (SMP).

am trying to set up machine to record from few sources of sound. My idea is to record one or more channels by one sound card. Later, meybe, add equalizerto alsa and other stuff.Anyway, i am stock on installing five (even two!) Astech AZT2320 soundcards.Butm the beggining...I decided to use Prolian 1500 server (6xIsa/Eisa, 1xIsa/pci, 2xpci. 2x166@P1) - it has many isa ports and isa, good quality, soundcards are cheap.

I installed two of AZT and run System Configuration Tool for P1500. It found one and set it up as schould (even two SB AWE64, later). But no more than one.Linux (2.4, slackware 11 - since grub and compaq uncompatibility problem at kernel+initrd>8mb) won't find more than one AZT2320 (found awe's).My question is: how to ask kernel to fully ignore bios while connecting to isa ports and search for Isa PnP cards?I will be compiling kernel at my own for this system (more recent than one from slackware cd)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Disable One Of Two Soundcards Using The Same Module?

Feb 8, 2010

I'm using Opensuse 11.2 with the fglrx-driver out of the ati-reposiotry.This fglrx-driver installs a HDA-HDMI-Audio driver using the snd-hda-intel module. My onboard via soundchip uses the same module: snd-hda-intelWith the hdmi-device set to the first device a few apps (like the flash-plugin) use the hdmi-device, which is not connected to any speaker.I can't switch the via-card to the first device in yast, because both cards use the kernel-module. I tried different things on /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf with not results. And it is not possible to put the module on a blacklist, because both cards use it.Is there any way to disable the hdmi-device or to set the via-device to default? Here the output of aplay -l

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Aplay Does Not Play Some Wav Files?

Jan 28, 2010

My audio is working on my recent koala install. System wav files play without a problem.

However, when I open a terminal to play my own wav files I get an error. (I encountered this problem merely by trying to setup an incoming mail notification with CheckGmail....)

The command: aplay /home/saskms/Music/test.wav

The error: aplay: test_wavefile:807: can't play WAVE-file format 0x0002 which is not PCM or FLOAT encoded

I think I have installed all the necessary gstreamer options. I am guessing that maybe I just need to re-rip the WAV file into a different format. I also tried doing searches on the error, but yielded no results.

Hardware :: Configure Multiple Soundcards (built-in Card And Webcam)?

Nov 17, 2009

I'm trying to add a webcam and it get's registered nicely. The problem is that after a reboot it registers as card 0, my internal card gets registered as card 1, and I lose all sound.

arecord -l without webcam:

Code:

card 0: default [PnP Audio Device ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

[code]....

C-Media is the built-in soundcard and Philips is the webcam.why the built-in is registered as an usb-device but it is and external sources confirm that this is correct. According to the alsa project wiki the correct way to give two devices using the same module (such as two usb-devices) a specific index is to add something along the following in the main alsa configuration file.

Code:

options snd-usb-audio index=1,2 vid=0x0ccd,0x0d8c pid=0x0028,0x000c

As I use Debian Squeeze 64-bit with the odd package from sid and multimedia repository enabled I found that the correct file to add this in is /etc/modprobe.conf. I therefore added this:

Code:

options snd-usb-audio index=0,1 vid=0d8c,0471 pid=0201,0333

This corresponds to my hardwares' VID and PID. When I reboot I and do arecord -l I get:

Code:

arecord: device_list:223: no soundcards found...

As an alternative I tried to add this snippet to /etc/modprobe.d/sound instead but at boot I get the message that "vid 0d8c" is an invalid parameter. Well, it's not. It adds upp with the output from lsusb and the external source linked to above. Do I need to add that arecord -l tells me I have no soundcard?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound - Aplay Gives Nothing - Lspci Shows Soundcard

Apr 4, 2011

I have had on and off problems with my sound for quite some time now. Each time it would stop working, I would find a fix which would work for a month or so, then I would go back to having no sound. I have had consistent sound on my Windows partition, so I don't think something is wrong with the hardware. The first fix I used was using "sudo alsa force-reload" to get ALSA working again. The latest fix I used was to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" to alsa-base.conf, which worked up until now. My built-in computer speakers won't make any sound, nor will my external monitors when they are plugged into the headphone jack. I do get sound when I plug in a pair of USB headphones.

I have tried using the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide [url], but I run into a predicament...

aplay -l (with or without being root) gives...

Code:

Code:

Alsamixer isn't much help either. It shows the name of my card in the top left, but there are no sliders to adjust.

I've tried compiling the modules from source, reinstalling through Synaptic, and plenty of other things, to no avail. Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite U305-S5107

General :: Get HDMI Audio To Be Visible To `aplay -l`?

Jul 18, 2010

I've got a new machine with an Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card with HDMI output. I'm trying to get sound to go out that HDMI cable, but although the device shows up on lspci, I can't get it acknowledged by aplay -l, which lists the audio devices known to the audio driver.

lspci shows (in part): 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) The first is the motherboard audio, and it works fine. The second (I assume) is the graphics card with HDMI. But aplay -l lists only the motherboard analog and S/PDIF outputs:

[Code]...

I can't see how I'm going to select a device that the drivers think isn't there. how to make that device visible to the sound drivers? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with a 2.6.32 stock kernel. The Nvidia driver version is 195.36.24.

Programming :: Using "aplay" To Play Notifications In C Program?

Oct 21, 2010

I am looking to play a simple sound effect as an event notification in a C program I am working on, but want to do it as simply and easily as possible. Portability is of no concern (this is a Linux-only application) nor is the format of the audio file (the file will be bundled with the application, so I can make the format whatever is necessary). The simplest way seems to be just calling "aplay" from within my program, but I am not sure if this is really a safe approach or not. Is this is a reasonable enough solution for a simple task like this? Other than the program not existing on the host OS (which obviously I would check for on execution), are there any other pitfalls?

Ubuntu Installation :: With NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card Drivers (310M) On A Dell Vostro 3300 - Errors "no Device Found - No Screens Found"

Oct 28, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.

The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:

1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation.iso Not Found With Install?

Jun 5, 2010

I am trying to install kubuntu using wubi and the "install within Windows" feature.

This is on a company asset where the base image cannot be modified, so I can't change the partition table or anything.

I ran the setup (wubi.exe) as administrator, and the install appears to go fine. I get to the prompt to reboot now, or reboot manually later. I go ahead and reboot now.

Upon reboot, I get the Windows boot prompt with kubuntu in the menu. I select kubuntu to stop the timer and pop in the CD. Then I hit enter.

The kubuntu splash screen comes up and flashes a couple times, and then I get a prompt that the installation ISO cannot be found, and I should run 'chkdsk' in Windows.

Here is the complete message:

Could not find the ISO /ubuntu/install/installation.iso This could also happen if the file system is not clean because of an operating system crash, an interrupted boot process, an improper shutdown, or unplugging of a removable device without first unmounting or ejecting it. To fix this, simply reboot into Windows, let it fully start, log in, run 'chkdsk /r', then gracefully shut down and reboot back into Windows. After this you should be able to reboot again and resume the installation.

Naturally, running chkdsk was one of the first things I tried. No matter how many times I run chkdsk and reboot and reboot, I still get the message (I've tried several times).

Upon the advice of one of the developers, I ran the bootinfoscript while using the Demo mode of kubuntu. Here are the results:

Code:

[Code]....

So far I have tried mounting the hard drive and the cdrom to various mount points (/, /cdrom, /isodevice) and tried rerunning the script that seems to give the failure (/scripts/casper-premount/20iso_scan). All continue to fail. The CD has the /ubuntu/install directory, but not the installation.iso.

I am currently unable to mount the hard drive because it is not recognized as a valid NTFS file system. The hard drive is currently whole-disk encrypted, so I'm going to try decrypting the drive and start the process again. The PGP passphrase prompt comes before the OS boot prompt, so I assumed that the disk would be "available".

I am using the 64-bit kubuntu 10.04 LTS CD for the install. The base Windows image is Windows 7 (x64).

The second adapter is for the LAN.BUT, on first and subsequent reboots after installation complete the second adapter is not detected at all, as if it were not even plugged into the PCI or the driver not loaded. This happens on either of two slots, with two different adapters, Intel or Netgear, both pretty recent, and both of which are detected and work in a different box. But when I only do "chkdsk" without the "/r" it ran normally. Any ideas how? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit not SP1. I used PowerISO to mount it.
