View 1 RepliesIt seems that when I start up any video in VLC recently that it automatically opts for the left only audio channel. This means that I have to go into the audio options with every movie or show I watch and switch it to stereo mode. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to get VLC to automatically start up in stereo. The videos I have been watching have stereo audio so that is not the problem. I have worked though all of the advanced audio options and I haven't found a way to be able to set this up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOr at least that's what I figured, when watching videos from ....., etc., the sound in the left channel turns into distorted high frequency noise, anyone had the same issue? Is there a fix for this? Sound in other applications works just fine.EDIT: Oh, and I'm using the proprietary flash plugin, has worked just fine on my Ubuntu Studio on the exact same computer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter having a bunch of trouble getting sound to work with 9.10, I finally got a system. After each linux kernel upgrade, I would just need to upgrade Alsa back to the latest version to get it working again.
A couple days ago, I noticed new kernel headers in the update package and was prepared to upgrade Alsa again. However, today when I went to do the upgrade I find that my soundcards are no longer available!
What can I do to get sound working again?

PC seems to run fine in single channel mode but monitor reports no input in dual channel mode and memtest86+ lists from 1-3 errors per pass in single channel mode. Motherboard (Gigabyte P43T-ES3G) can't be set for the 1.65 volts required by the RAM (2x2 of OCZ3P1333LV4GK PC3 10666). The mobo voltage choices are 1.6 or 1.7 volts. I have tried both and increased the MCH voltage from 1.1 v to 1.2 v, but so far can't get it to run in dual channel mode at all and single channel mode seems to run fine but I still get errors in memtest86+. Also tried optimized Bios settings and loosened memory timings (from 7-7-7-16 to 8-8-8-27 and tRFC 60 to 70) and reset Command Rate from 0 to 2. CPU is Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz, PSU is rated at 400 watts, Video card is Gigabyte GT220.

When I try to use airplay-ng for the packet injection, it always gives me the error " wlan0 is on channel -1, but the AP uses channel 6". I've tried setting wlan0 to channel 6 manually, but that doesn't help. I spent a while searching for a solution, but it seemed like each page had a different, usually highly complex solution, that still doesn't work. I have the most recent drivers for my wireless card, and it meets all the requirements. So, is there any solution to this that will actually work?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was hoping that upgrading to 10.04 would fix my problems with sound and HDMI but alas it doesn't. I have an HP dv7 that I wish connect via an HDMI cable to my HDTV and play things like Hulu, Boxee, etc. with the sound coming out of my home theater system. I know that the hardware is capable of doing this because I have Windows 7 installed in a dual boot and it has no problems with pumping sound down the HDMI channel.
I've upgraded to Alsa 1.0.23 freshly compiled. With 1.0.23 I see HDMI settings in Pulse Audio Volume Control. However if I start say VLC and play a video, check pavucontrol and make sure the Playback is set to the HDMI channel. I can hook up the HDMI cable and I can see the video playing - but no audio. I've been in and out of all kinds of things like alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer, sound preferences, etc. and I've toggled things on and off in an attempt to get HDMI sound working but nothing works.
In alsamixer if I hit f6 I see my 0 card as HDA Intel and my 1 card as NDA NVidia. If I select NVidia I see only S/PDIF, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 3. I can only mute or unmute these. I've tried both - nothing works. Let me know what sort of output/info you need and I'll post it. Here's some info I've seen others post:

I'm trying to play a hi-def wmv. I get video and audio, but there is definitely some audio missing. The center channel is gone. I have music and sound effects, but the characters dialog is silent.
My motherboard is Intel DG31PR with 5.1 Realtek HD on board sound card I can't find 5.1 options on sound preferences on ubuntu 10.10... how can i setup a 5.1 audio channel...?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerPC installation (fully patched) of Ubuntu 10, and I pulled down the MythTV suite on top (since there is no Mythbuntu/PPC that I found). I'm having an issue where after I scan for channels with my tuner using mythtv-setup, I can't set the starting channel number. Its almost as if nothing ever populates into the drop down. This seems to be specific to the combination that I have - Ubuntu 10 + PPC + Myth 0.23. If I use another x86 + Myth .21 and the same Tuner (HDHomeRun), I can set the starting channel fine. A Mac OS 10.4 + Myth .21 also allowed me to set the channel. I've rebuilt this install twice now and it won't allow me to set it. I can see the scanned data in the mythconverg database, so I know its there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running MythBuntu 10.04 32-bit on an ASUS DualCore Atom + NVidia ION chipset. It's taken me a while to get it all working (still not there yet on the remote!), but there are a couple of glitches with the tuner card.
10.04 appears to have the kernel modules already, so I installed the firmware following linuxtv.org instructions and got it working pretty quickly in MythTV. I've since built the latest stable kernel module and updated the firmware to v4l-saa7164-1.0.3-3.fw which appears to be the latest. Same issues in both cases anyway.
Problem 1: The picture using /dev/dvb/adapter1 breaks up / stutters like there's a poor signal, although it says 90+% and /dev/dvb/adapter0 is rock solid. When I try with mplayer it plays but gives lots of errors on the second tuner, but I guess that's not surprising. Example output:

Problem 2: Switching channels takes a good 7-10 seconds even on tuner 1. The screen goes black, then you get a tiny fragment of the original channel before the new channel kicks in.
How do i change the channel gnome-volume-control controls? I want it to control pcm but it controls master front. There used to be a setting right in the sound preferences but i think it disappeared with the 9.10 upgrade or at least i can not find it anymore. I've looked on the at gnome alsa mixer while changing the volume and master front gets controlled while pcm is always set to max. The problem with this is that master front does almost nothing to change the actual volume.
If i control pcm with the alsa mixer the volume range is fine. I've found a manual for gnome-volume-control on [URL].en and the pic there actually looks like i remember it looking. But i can not get to that screen. What i have looks completely different. Its a window with the tabs Sound Effects | Hardware | Input | Output | Applications. But there is no sight of any channel settings and the only slider there does the same as the applet one.
I have a Creative SoundBlaster live SB0490 USB sound card. Alsamixer only shows a mic channel for this card although it has a line in. Is this because it is not supported or how it is meant to be? I have problems with no audio out on a program which directly accesses the card as hw:1 although it is actually using it and wonder if this is all related. Strangely I can play sound through the card using rythmbox.

I'm an Ubuntu newbie here, and I recently bought an ASUS N53JF-XE1 laptop, and after a new installation of Ubuntu 10.10, I don't seem to be able to get the sound working (neither from speakers, nor from headphones). View 2 Replies View RelatedI lost sound after restarting, I had sound, then on my reboot... No sound. I tried to google the problem and ran the common tasks of removing and re-installing "alsa-base" and "pulseaudio" using apt-get in terminal. But after trying all this I have now lost the volume control at the top right of my screen I have no idea what the issue is, in System > Preferences > Sound I get nothing under Hardware, nothing under Input, "Dummy Output" under Output, and nothing special under Applications. Here is the results of commands in terminal which I have commonly see people been asked to do:

The only thing I think that could of triggered everything to mess up is some mods I made to to the alsa-base.conf file - What I did to it I can't remember, But I have tried to remove these two lines of code at the end of it, saved it, restarted my computer and still no audio. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) 64Bit Kernel Linux 2.6.35-22-Generic GNOME 2.32.0

I'm using Opensuse 11.2 with the fglrx-driver out of the ati-reposiotry.This fglrx-driver installs a HDA-HDMI-Audio driver using the snd-hda-intel module.My onboard via soundchip uses the same module: snd-hda-intelWith the hdmi-device set to the first device a few apps (like the flash-plugin) use the hdmi-device, which is not connected to any speaker.I can't switch the via-card to the first device in yast, because both cards use the kernel-module. I tried different things on /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf with not results. I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.
Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread.As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.
Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.
I'm trying to add a webcam and it get's registered nicely. The problem is that after a reboot it registers as card 0, my internal card gets registered as card 1, and I lose all sound.

C-Media is the built-in soundcard and Philips is the webcam.why the built-in is registered as an usb-device but it is and external sources confirm that this is correct. According to the alsa project wiki the correct way to give two devices using the same module (such as two usb-devices) a specific index is to add something along the following in the main alsa configuration file.

As I use Debian Squeeze 64-bit with the odd package from sid and multimedia repository enabled I found that the correct file to add this in is /etc/modprobe.conf. I therefore added this:

This corresponds to my hardwares' VID and PID. When I reboot I and do arecord -l I get:

As an alternative I tried to add this snippet to /etc/modprobe.d/sound instead but at boot I get the message that "vid 0d8c" is an invalid parameter. Well, it's not. It adds upp with the output from lsusb and the external source linked to above. Do I need to add that arecord -l tells me I have no soundcard?
I would like to use two monitors with my desktop, so connected them the other day and it worked straight away, which is good but... The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. Can I do anything to extend my desktop to the left instead of to the right so I can have background application on the screen to the left?

i use ubuntu 10.04 and I want to watch a .mkv with softsubs from right to left. I tried : totem vlc MPlayer SMPlayer with no luck. I am pretty sure I got it working on 9.10 cant remember how?
