Ubuntu Installation :: USB Drive Not Found?
May 27, 2010
I've always used a Seagate external drive (USB) for backup of data.
Now, for whatever reason, the drive isn't recognized/found/seen/appear.
For that matter- none of the USB stick memories I connect are recognized either on any of the USB ports I hook them into.
All of the USB stuff works perfectly in Windows.

I've built a new computer and successfully installed XP on it. I've tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit edition from a pen drive and CD. I can boot into the pendrivend use it however when I try to install it doesn't recognize the harddrive. At the moment there are no jumpers on the harddrive although I've tried them in several positions to no avail. I've also tried plugging the harddrive in several of the SATA ports on the motherboardeven tried unplugging the DVD drive altogether.. no joy. I also went into the Bios and changed the mode to AHCI (it was set to IDE)My motherboard is a Asus P6X58D-E with an i7processor and 2Gb ram.The harddrive is a 500Gb WD5000AAKS

I did an upgrade on the weekend from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (karmic to lucid). Now, when I restart my computer, it goes through the regular load screen showing my P5K Asus motherboard, just like before but instead of showing the Ubuntu load screen, it tries to start grub ("Grub loading stage 1.5") but fails and then says "No any drive found" and the screen goes black. I've tried changing the drive configuration in the BIOS to AHCI or RAID and that didn't work. I've tried disabling JMICRON but to no avail. I'm running out of options here.

The brand new MEMOREX 24X Lightscribe DVD player(SATA) is not detected by my UBUNTU 10.10 install (via USB stick LiveCD install). I know it should have worked out-of-the box, but it does not, dmesg or lshw command shows all other SATA connections ( 2 hard drives) , BUT the DVD Drive. The DVD drive is detected by the MSI BIOS, it is also fully functional in the dual-booted Windos 7 installation next to the Ubuntu 10.10, so I know the DVD player is ok. I have the latest B3 Stepping MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard with Intel i7 2600K cpu.

I have an old Dell Dimension 2400, currently running winXP. It has a second hard drive attached onto which I'd like to install ubuntu. The drive is visible in My Computer, but when I began the install process, ubuntu didn't give me any option to install on the second drive; it doesn't seem to see it's there. I went into the Setup menu and the drive isn't found there. Does anyone know what I need to do to configure things so that I can get ubuntu onto the second HD?

I'm trying to install Fedora 12 on my EeePC 901 from a 8GB USB stick. However I get the error each time after clicking Next on the boot loader setup screen. Code: Missing ISO 9660 Image The installer has tried to mount image #1, but cannot find it on the hard drive. Please copy this image to the drive and click Retry. Click Exit to abort the installation. I tried this with the DVD as well as the net install image. I tried setting up the USB stick with unetbootin and semi-manually [1]. I still get the same error.
I've set up the first 4GB SSD (sda1) as / ext4 partition and the second 16GB SSD (sdb1) as an encrypted /home partition. sdc1 is the USB stick and sdd1 is a 16GB SD card in the card reader. They are not used in the installation. I realize, that the 4GB / partition will probably be too small etc, but I'm just trying to get the installer to go the package selection page.

I downloaded and burned the Fedora-13-x86_64-dvd iso to install on my shiny new box (MSI NF980-G65 MB, AMD Phenom II x4 945 CPU, 8GB Corsair DDR3 memory, generic ATAPI DVD drive, 2 500GB SATA drives, 2 1.5TB SATA drives). I boot from the DVD and and take the default install/upgrade option on the menu. I've tried with the default boot options and with about a dozen different options, all give the the same thing.
Looking console 3, shows the following:
ERROR loader: removing ddmode.conf failed
ERROR loader: got to setupCdrom without a CD device
It can't find the CD/DVD drive that it booted from. The install on console 1 is prompting for a driver to load. Do I need to download a driver for a generic ATAPI/IDE CD/DVD drive?

I recently decided to install Ubuntu on a couple of computers without CD drives (netbooks), so I followed these instructions to create a bootable flash drive: http:[url].....That worked fine for both netbooks. Now I'm trying to use the same flash drive on a desktop currently running Windows Vista, but get his message when I try to boot from the flash drive:
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!I tried to boot one of the netbooks from the flash drive again and that still works.I'm thinking a BIOS setting.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 running on a HP Proliant DL380. The Server has 1 SCSI disk install which runs the Ubuntu OS. I recently added a new SCSI drive to the system (hot swap)
Run fdisk -ls
But it does not show the device.
I've also run
Code:
sudo rescan-scsi-bus.sh -w -l
which returned
Code:
0 new device(s) found.
0 device(s) removed.
I've have 4 other scsi bays which have the same result. I need to be able to see the drive before I can even mount/format.

I am not well versed in using Ubuntu. I was using Win XP Pro SP3 on my old machine. I decided to make the move to Ubuntu. No problem since all files on the primary drive of the old machine were just OS related. I kept all of the important stuff (music, documents, reg codes, etc.) The computer had no problem importing the songs on the external drive to the music library. I am playing songs and loving it. Now the problem... when I am starting with ubuntu I don't find the drive and I can't mount it.
I get a box stating:
You are not privileged to mount this volume

I have managed to get a system going where I have kubuntu installed on a partition of my external hard drive. When the ehd is plugged in, everything works well. I have the option to boot into vista (my main os) or kubuntu. However, I see no reason why it won't let me have some kind of fallback mechanism that would let me boot into vista if the ehd is not found, instead I end up with the grub rescue prompt.
If not then I'm going to have to look at other options, perhaps booting into vista by default unless I hold down escape or whatever other key my bios expects to override, because there will be times that my ehd won't be plugged in. This is the only little niggle, as apart from that everything is working great.

I tried to burn a cd today and k3b told me it couldn't find an optical device. It suggested making sure HAL was running, it is. Nothing has changed except auto upgrades, so I tried an apt-get upgrade to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. Burning has never been an issue before, and googling all day hasn't provided any answers, apart from finding /etc/init.d/hal The permissions haven't been changed.

I seem to be having a problem with burning CDs. Whenever I launch k3b, it says 'No optical drive found.' However, When I insert a CD while in KDE, it properly mounts it. What do I do? It seems like udev/hal is working fine. Also, I can't get KDE to recognize any inserted flash drive or external usb storage device inserted on demand.

Interestingly the drive shows up as /dev/sdb, but there is no corresponding /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdb2 for the two partitions on it.
The drive works fine if I plug it directly into my laptop.

I am getting ready to go to FC14. Yesterday I downloaded both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions -dvd iso. When I tried to burn the images with K3B I got the message 'No Optical drvice found'. Shut off my PC and rebooted this morning. The first thing I did was I tried to burn the 32 bit version with K3B. It worked. Went off and installed it - no problem. I came back to burn the 64 bit version. K3B says "No optical drive found'. K3b (and/or Fedora) lost connection with my optical drives - a DVD-Writer and DVD reader. I have put cds into the drives and tried to open the cds with File Browser with no luck.
Some pertinent data:
[root@Vince vince]# cat /etc/fstab
#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Mon Aug 17 15:12:43 2009
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or vol_id(8) for more info
[Code].....
I looked in messages and found no references after the successful burning of the 32 bit dvd. Nothing to indicate why Fedora lost contact with the dvd writer. What else is needed to fix this? I think that if I reboot, I will have access to both drives again. If that happens, I will burn the 64 bit iso and look into updating my system.

I have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??
