Ubuntu Installation :: Updating 10.04 LTS - 404 Not Found
Sep 1, 2011
I recently installed ubuntu 10.04 lts on my computer but it won't update.... I've tried both using update manager and terminal.. and I got this message both times
Code:

I have an HP Pavilion DV 6500 laptop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu (via Wubi). I just updated Ubuntu to 10.10 from 10.04. After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. When I select it from the bootloader, it gives me a couple of errors, the final one being: Error: File not found And then reboots the system automatically.
Been trying to solve this using Google for a while. Well, I recently did: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. Now, whenever I boot up I get "Error #15: File not found."From what I've gathered, something is wrong with my menu.lstI've tried several things to fix this, but I can't figure it out.
When I try to update on line I get the messagehttp://download.opensuse.org/reposit...ctory_Desktop/ not found.I am using openSuse 11.2 with KDE desktop.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and everything was working fine. I also have Win XP installed and Ubuntu 9.10.I was able to boot any of these OS's with no problem.Without understanding the ramifications of my actions, I enlarged the Windows partition to incorporate the unallocated space at the beginning of my disk using Easeus Partition Master from within my Windows OS. Apparently, I wiped out my grub!I have been able to boot to my 2.6.31-14 kernel (Ubuntu 10.04) using commands from the grub rescue prompt.Upon successful boot into the system, I initiated the command: sudo update-grub and my system still reports Error: the symbol 'grub getcharwidth' not found. Here is my grub.cfg:
# # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub[code]....
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernal.
I had Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows Xp installed on by 80GB Hard Disk by giving 40GB each to Ubuntu & Xp. Due to some problem in Windows Xp (nothing new) i had to reinstall Windows Xp. I had taken backup of all data on Windows & Ubuntu fully knowing that Grub would go haywire.
Now i want to install Ubuntu 10.04 on the 40GB that was earlier occupied by Ubuntu 8.04 from CD.
I'm posting the output of sudo fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 2611 20972826 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 2612 9729 57175335 f W95 Ext'd (LBA) /dev/sda5 2612 3916 10482381 7 HPFS/NTFS

OK, I've learnt my lesson and won't update ubuntu anymore, since it's the second time i'm encountering serious problems after updating it. But please if somebody can, please help me fix this now. I need my os with all my settings back as it was. I've seen that my /home partition is fine, and the root partition has less files/folders than the live cd root partition has, so I believe that only some important system files went missing up to now.
i installed ubuntu 10.04 and after installation it had automatic updates i did that updates ter wer around 150 updates after these updates the output sound is gone. it is detecting my sound card and its not muted in alsamixer.
i just did a reinstall of 9.10 and am having a few problems.
1. hardware drivers for the wireless modem are updated, but not functioning. the driver screen says it's activated, though.
2. when i do to install java (following the instructions at http://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/java), i get the following error: "mv: cannot stat"<file info and move to directory>"
I went to update today and got these errors. Anyone else getting these?:

I just completed a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 from USB (On a Toshiba portege m200). The installation went fine, and I updated the packages and rebooted when asked to do so, but when the computer was starting again the Ubuntu logo became wierdly deformed and then nothing happened. After 5 minutes I hard-rebooted it (Is that what its called? I held down the power button). And booted up in recovery mode. Again the computer froze, with this message as the latest on screen:
When I update my Ubuntun 9.10 to 10.04 from the iso file, and run the command "sudo gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupdate"", it reminds me that "Authentication failed". Before the warning, the updating box stops at "calculating the changes" for a very long time.
After installing ubuntu 10.4 I tried to update but it caused some error as reported as follows. I have already tried to googling the solutions but it seems that there's no right one for me.
ive tried to update my test-laptop (thinkpad t43) to the actual beta. the dist-upgrade worked whitout problems, but after rebooting the x-server seems to work, but screen is empty...it seems that the xserver is crashing:
Quote: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting here the full log: Quote: [ 181.280] X.Org X Server 1.9.0
I am a new user to ubuntu, I had installed ubuntu 10.1 rc a couple of weeks ago and its working fine. Now that the official release is out should I install the new version or should I continue with the rc. The update manager fails to update any updates showing error.
I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7. I installed wubi and all worked fine until I ran some ubuntu updates. Now the computer will not boot, what comes up is error: no such device: f53e513e-bfa0-4126-ab5c-8f7777505812. grub rescue> Is returns unknown command set returns prefix=(hd0)/boot/grub root=hd0
I partial updated the ubuntu packages after repeated messages. Finally it asked me to delete obsolete files and I clicked Ok. After some time the wireless internet Icon on the top right corner disappered.
Now I cant connect to internet by my router either wireless or wired. My wlan drivers are ok too. There seem to be no network whatsoever.
I have a problem. Today I updated from 10.10 to 11.04 and it looks really cool. However, I also have Windows 7 on a different partition. When I restarted after I updated, GRUB looked different. Also, when I tried to boot to Windows 7, the screen would go blank (like it was restarting) and it would just bring me up to the GRUB menu again. I really need to get back onto Windows 7.
Ubuntu is getting glitchy and I need to update it, but there's something holding me back. In the past, whenever I used to update, I would get some sort of GRUB Menu (if that's what it's called) after reboot, and I would have no idea of how to get into Ubuntu. This would eventually lead me to uninstall Ubuntu via Wubi because of frustration and lack of answers on the internet.
But not this time. I want the solution this time so I can be successful in updating. Can anybody PLEASE tell me what happened all of those times, and what I can do to prevent it from happening now?
After my system was updated to Natty, even though Software Sources is set for LTS updates only, none of the repositories in Software Sources or /etc/apt/sources.list.d were updated. I have manually updated the Software Sources repositories, and removed the outdated repositories from /etc/apt/sources.list.d, but when I do apt-get update I still see references to previous Ubuntu versions. How do I update ALL the repositories?
1.) I made a few updates that I found a website my friend sent me: http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2009/...nstalling.html
however, when I would go to enter the APT line in the other sources in the software sources windows then close and reload it I would get the following error message code...
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I also attached a screen shot of the error message window.
2.) I don't know if i should post another issue I had, but when i try to run GNUnet it says that Daemon is not running. I'm not sure what that is all about.
