Ubuntu Installation :: Network Connection Detected - Internet Not Working?

Aug 17, 2011

i installed a linux flavor (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.04, and then Linux Mint).. They all gave this same problem about the wired network (see the picture). The connection seems to be fine but i can't connect to internet or even to my router. Which is weird since it knows my router IP 192.168.1.79. Wasted the whole night trying to figure it out but i just can't understand why. I have a separate partition on this computer to run Win7 also and confirmed that the network connection is working.

Ubuntu Installation :: Network Cards Not Detected?

Feb 16, 2011

Toshiba T110 laptop, 4 meg ram, kernel 2.6.31-14; multi boot Suse / Ubuntu / Windows; Atheros AR8132 Ethernet card; Realtek RTL8191 SE wireless card.

Installed 9.10 from an old DVD lying around - everything appeared to go ok, but no networks cards - Ethernet or wireless - were detected during the install.

(Later versions do not install - problems somewhere with video card - I need to allow multi kernel selection - but this is another issue)

Does this mean that this install is toast, or can it be saved?

Fedora :: HPLIP Install - Enabling Network Printing?

Nov 30, 2009

In short, attached a terminal screenshot of me trying to install hplip. Why hplip-3.9.10.run doesn't recognize the fact that gcc has already been installed? In detail: I have HP PSC 1210 connected to a Windoze XP machine. I want to enable network printing, but the only printer showing up standard in the F12 drivers is the HP PSC 1200. When I use that one, I reach the printer, and the Windoze printer queue, but no matter how long I wait, nothing ever comes out of the printer. It'll start moving like "I'm about to print!" but then does nothing. So through the hp-opensource website I determined which driver I want, and get a long way into installing the file. It hangs up on the attached screenshot.

Debian :: HPLIP Network Printer On Lenny System

I just installed HPLIP using Synaptic package manager. One of the configure parameters (shown by 'hp-check -r') is

Code:

Am I correct in assuming that this means that a network printer will not work? Is there a way to override this while still using synaptic package manager? Would I then be able to use a network printer?

I have my eye on the HP photosmart plus B209A - and it looks like HPLIP supports it (there is a ppd file for it).

Ubuntu Installation :: Minimal Install - Mini.iso - No Network Interfaces Detected?

May 9, 2010

Trying a minimal install with the mini.iso. I don't have a wired internet connection, only wireless from my iPhone which works fine with my full install of Ubuntu. The installer is not able to find my wireless connection stating "No Network Interfaces Detected". I did try to install yesterday in town with a friends wired internet connection and I got the same result. I'm able to get to the command line in the installer but have no idea how to start my wireless connection so the install can continue. I have searched here, and elsewhere on the net to the point of giving up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wired Minimal Install - No Network Interfaces Detected?

Jul 18, 2010

I'm trying to do a minimal install via a USB flash drive. Everything was good until it tried to recognize my network (wired). It showed "No Network Interfaces Detected" (On Ubuntu and Debian). I wish to do a minimal install since I want to install the programs I want myself. Plus, I have a small flash drive.

I'm using an Atheros AR8151 PCI-E as my card (as shown by Windows). I also have a wireless, though I don't care much about that, wired will probably be easier. Through the command shell, I can see Ethernet Controller: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0). When I do plug the Ethernet cable in, I don't get the lights on during Linux installation but they do come on in Windows. If I need some additional driver, can I somehow add it to the minimal installation? I was looking through the log file and found that i82365 could not be loaded, a PCMCIA controller. I'm assuming this is separate from the NIC and interfaces between the bus and the NIC.

no idea whether it's because it couldn't find the drivers or because the controller was incorrectly identified. But I'm pretty sure this is why I can't get my network card to work.

Debian Hardware :: Unable To Set Up CUPS / HPLIP And Network Printers

Jan 12, 2012

I'm having a devil of a time trying to set up printing with 3 network printers: an HP Laserjet P4014n, an HP Laserjet 5200tn, and an HP Officejet Pro 8500 a909a. The three printers are connected directly to the office intranet and have their own ip addresses. The system I'm trying to configure is running Wheezy, and HPLIP and Cups are both installed. I have confirmed (from [URL] ....) that all printers are supported.

First, running "hp-setup -i" (hplip-gui is not installed -- I do not wish to pull in half of KDE simply to configure printing), the program only finds the 2 laserjets. Adding one of them creates a printer in CUPS with an "hp:/net/<printer name>" connection. Attempting to printing a test page through CUPS fails with message "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed".

Interestingly enough, running "hp-probe -bnet" finds all three printers. However, running "hp-makeuri" with each printer's ip address fails with "error: Device not found". Hmmm, so HPLIP can apparently go from seeing everything to seeing nothing. Very useful.

Moving to the CUPs browser interface, clicking "Find New Printers" under the "Administration" tab also only shows the 2 laserjets, although each is listed three times(!). The only difference that I can see among the three versions of each printer is in the connection uri:

dnssd://<printer name>._printer._tcp.local/
dnssd://<printer name>._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
dnssd://<printer name>._ipp._tcp.local/

Adding any one of them seems to work, although I do not understand why there are three of them (presumably different protocols, though what they are and the differences between them are, I don't know).

Logging into the officejet control panel and browsing at its network configuration, I see mDNS, SNMP, and WINS are disabled, although SLP is enabled. Looking in '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf', I see 'BrowseLocalProtocols' is set to only CUPS and DNSSD, so I add SLP and restart CUPS. No change; the officejet still doesn't show. I go back into the officejet control panel and enable mDNS (which, if I understand correctly, is essentially the same as DNSSD). Nothing; the officejet still doesn't show.

Fedora Installation :: Ethernet NIC Detected But Wired Network Disconnected

Mar 31, 2011

I'm stuck after a clean install of FC14 on an old Everex StepNote (Doing this for a friend). I tried Ubuntu on it first (because it's so easy) but had horrible stability issues and terminal commands wouldn't respond - however Ubuntu detected and ran the eth0 port just fine. FC14 detects my ethernet NIC, but it won't work.

Here are my details.
lspci outputs this for my NIC:
00:12:0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 7c)

Here is what I have tried so far - with no luck:
- I have toggled the networking switch on the laptop and had no luck.
- Downloaded Via's VT6102 drivers for Fedora Core, but they don't support kernel 2.6.35.*
- Run ifconfig to manually assign an IP address - which it DID take and did route add default gw as well.
- Did a ifconfig eth0 down and up as well.

After all that, I still have a "disconnected" wired connection (and yes, I did check the cable - it works just fine in my personal machine.

Slackware :: --current - Hplip Won't Setup To Network Capable Multifunction Printer

Mar 14, 2011

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue before I send a note off to Slackware on this.

The --current hplip package can't seem to actually complete the installation of a networked hp printer that has the printer physically plugged into the network.

The hplip app initially does detect the device, then I click next, then it says installation failed as it can't connect to the device.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I am however able to build, and run an older hplip that --current used a while back and it works splendid for adding a printer over the network.

I'm using version hplip-3.9.4b-i486-1 but I know that's not a big help to the project.

OpenSUSE Network :: Unable To Configure Network / NICs Not Being Detected?

Sep 6, 2011

I'm going to come right out and say I am a complete novice with Linux/SUSE. The equipment I'm having a problem with is a little web-server that was purchased by my employer that has, quite suddenly, stopped functioning. I was changing the IP address within YaST, at which point the device offered to update itself, which I saw no harm in. Post-update, however, I was unable to so much as ping the device.

I tried "ifconfig eth0": "Error fetching interface information: Device not found." I went into network settings via YaST and found that there are two cards now listed as: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Both IP addresses are "Not configured". The information pane, for both cards, cites:

RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controllerBusID : 0000:02:00.0 Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. The only difference in either of the cards is the BusID (0000:02:00.0 and 0000:03.00.0)

I can neither edit nor delete either of these cards. As I mentioned, I am a total Linux novice, and am at a total loss for what to do next, or even how to find critical information about the system itself. I know enough to check dmesg, but not enough to have any clue what to look for in the output.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Wireless Network Connection?

Sep 6, 2010

I have been uninstalling, reinstalling, .... for about the past 14 hours and finally I realize I need help. First, I am trying to install the latest Ubuntu 10.04.1 (64-bit) on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion).

I did have 10.04 running for a few months on this laptop but when I recently upgraded to ver. .... 32-24 things started to go wrong. Suddenly, I could no longer even bootup Ubuntu ...32-24. But, I was able to use ...32-23 or ...32-21 which were also on my machine. Then in trying to fix ...32-24 all my installed versions of Ubuntu 10.04 became unbootable. I tried many suggestions (see my postings on this yesterday and today on the Ubuntu forum -- General help) .

I realized that this was hopeless after many attempts. I could not bootup, even from my bootable Ubuntu CD. I then decided to just begin from scratch and install the latest downloadable Ubuntu --- I started with this early this morning. This went rather smooth; but, no matter how many reinstallations I did, I could never make a wireless connection to the network. Note, the same wireless hardware and settings were used as in the previous working versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 (on the same machine) --- I have not made any hardware changes.

I am sending this message from my desktop PC which has Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) and again, I have carefully checked and verified that the setting for my wireless connection to the internet are identical for both (this desktop and my laptop). However, I am still unable to make a wireless network connection on my laptop!

What can I do to get my wireless network working on my laptop with the latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1? It could be that this latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1 does not have the necessary drivers/software for the wireless network. But, it was ok in the previous downloadable --- I had been using it for a couple of months with no problems at all. Is it possible to reinstall 10.04 vers. ...32-23 rather that 10.04.1 vers. ...32-24? I could not find this on the Web.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wired Connection Detected?

I'm running 11.04 on a Toshiba Satellite L350, and recently (well, for the past couple of weeks or so), I've been unable to connect to my network via a cable, only with wifi.

It isn't that it's unable to connect, it just doesn't show up in Network Manager.

My housemates, who run Windows, have no problems, so it's obviously something on my end...

Edit: I also tried connecting using wicd, but that doesn't detect it either.
