CentOS 5 Networking :: Cannot Edit Connection In Network Manager
Jan 12, 2011I'd like to use NetworkManager on a freshly installed CenntOS 5 on laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. I followed: [URL] Everything went OK, until I selected my active LAN connection in "Edit Connections". After clicking on "Edit", it's not possible to change anything - all is grayed-out. I'm guessing it's a permission problem. But I don't know the internal structure of NetworkManager and what files to look at. I was also expecting that after stopping the network service "Syetem->Admin->Network" would be inactive, but it isn't. Shouldn't the old network manager be uninstalled as well?

I have a script that I have set to auto-run on startup in my standard Unity session; I created a script and added it to the startup programs list there. Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Nov 13, 2010I have a laptop that is a little bit older, and OpenSUSE was running pretty heavy on it with the KDE and Gnome desktops (I installed Gnome, tried it for bit, then wiped it and did a clean install with KDE).
Since it was so sluggish on that laptop, I grabbed a couple live CD's of OpenSUSE with the LXDE and XFCE desktop environments. The XFCE disc doesn't seem to boot at all, which I tried in a couple different computers, and on Virtualbox with the same result.
LXDE worked fine and I installed it just fine, with hopes of switching over to XFCE later, as I like it better. This brings me to my question, can someone tell me what the easiest way is to switch from the LXDE desktop to XFCE?

I went there, I clicked on 11.3 on the right hand side, and then clicked on the 1-click install option for X11fce, the first option. It opens the YaST software manager and I followed the prompts, and it finished. All of the packages were installed, except XDM.
I was expecting that the software would install and configure the desktop, and I'd reboot to see an XFCE login. This was not the case.
what the correct, and safe way would be to switch desktops?

On the LXDE desktop I am trying to increase the virtual desktops from 2 to 4 desktops but every time I right click on the desktop pager icon on the task bar and then click on Desktop Pager Setting (from the menu that appears), nothing happens I don't get any configuration window for the desktop pager. AM I missing something from my install of LXDE??

Aug 1, 2011The first issue is adding launch icons to the task bar. I can add launchers, but cannot figure out how to link them to applications. It is only half a problem, because putting links on the desktop is easy, but I prefer having launchers on the task bar so the desktop is not cluttered.The big problem is placement of desktop icons. I like to put icons on the right side of the screen, and more importantly, I like to group related icons. For example, if I had a folder or document for Linux and another for Debian, I want them grouped together. I also like arranging by category: folders in one column, documents and images in another and launchers (if any) in a third. However, if there is way to enable desktop icons to be moved, I cannot figure it out. Icons are fixed on the left side of the screen with folders first in alphabetical order, then documents/images in alphabetical or numerical order, and launch icons last.My guess is icons can be moved, but I am not computer literate enough to figure it out. It does not make sense that the task bar can be placed on the top, bottom, left or right, but desktop icons cannot be moved. I have tried every preference setting, but there are no relevant options.Am I over-looking something that is not obvious or is it a strange deficiency with LXDE?

After a reboot, I no longer have desktop icons and I'm seeing the default Fedora wallpaper. Also, if I right-click on the desktop, I get a standard openbox menu instead of the LXDE one.

In the terminal if I give "nm-applet &" the applet starts and the notification daemon states "connection established" but still internet is not available. But this has been discarded, and the "one size fits all" Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So..... onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.
It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line. I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch. Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 "share" the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address. Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.
Debian Hardware :: Wheezy 7.8 With LXDE Desktop - Task Bar Volume Control No Longer Functions
Feb 11, 2015Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Wireless Network Connection?
Sep 6, 2010I have been uninstalling, reinstalling, .... for about the past 14 hours and finally I realize I need help. First, I am trying to install the latest Ubuntu 10.04.1 (64-bit) on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion).
I did have 10.04 running for a few months on this laptop but when I recently upgraded to ver. .... 32-24 things started to go wrong. Suddenly, I could no longer even bootup Ubuntu ...32-24. But, I was able to use ...32-23 or ...32-21 which were also on my machine. Then in trying to fix ...32-24 all my installed versions of Ubuntu 10.04 became unbootable. I tried many suggestions (see my postings on this yesterday and today on the Ubuntu forum -- General help) .
I realized that this was hopeless after many attempts. I could not bootup, even from my bootable Ubuntu CD. I then decided to just begin from scratch and install the latest downloadable Ubuntu --- I started with this early this morning. This went rather smooth; but, no matter how many reinstallations I did, I could never make a wireless connection to the network. Note, the same wireless hardware and settings were used as in the previous working versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 (on the same machine) --- I have not made any hardware changes.
I am sending this message from my desktop PC which has Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) and again, I have carefully checked and verified that the setting for my wireless connection to the internet are identical for both (this desktop and my laptop). However, I am still unable to make a wireless network connection on my laptop!
What can I do to get my wireless network working on my laptop with the latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1? It could be that this latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1 does not have the necessary drivers/software for the wireless network. But, it was ok in the previous downloadable --- I had been using it for a couple of months with no problems at all. Is it possible to reinstall 10.04 vers. ...32-23 rather that 10.04.1 vers. ...32-24? I could not find this on the Web.

Sep 21, 2010I'm using opensuse 11.3 32bit with LXDE. I have configured an apache tomcat server listening on port 8080. Yast was used to open udp 8080 and tcp 8080 in the firewall by manual entry under the advanced button of 'allowed services' menu.Another system was used to access the tomcat server via a firefox webbrowser. The attempt was unsuccessful. The url used was [URL]. firefox webbrowser keeps showing'connecting ...' until timeout. I'm assuming that inspite of the specified port openings in the firewall, it is somehow ignored. If I were to disable the firewall, then I can access the tomcat server with the firefox webbrowser.
