Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded Kernel - Lost Previous Kernels?
Aug 5, 2011
I upgraded to 2.6.35-30.56 last night and now my system's a little flaky. Everything seems to be running ever-so-slightly slower and fullscreen flash is now choppy. The weird thing is the Grub menu upon bootup only shows the latest kernel, but not the previous kernels. Doing an "ls" of the /boot folder only shows this newest kernel. I'd like to revert back to the previous kernel but don't know how.

I'm having an issue with my suspend, and nothing seems to be fixing it. Every time I suspend, the computer starts up as if it were shut down. Somebody recommended that I use a previous kernel, such as 2.6.35-28, rather than the current kernel, 2.6.38-. When I open Synaptic, no previous kernels are listed, so I wanted to see if anybody else knew how to install previous kernels.

I recently upgraded to 10.04 Lucid a while ago. I don't know if anyone else needs this feature but I use it a lot.
MOUSE-OVER RHYTHMBOX PLAYER ICON FUNCTIONALITIES
In previous releases, one of my favorites about RhythmBox was the fact that if you need to control things such as volume or check presently playing track, you can do so just by a mouse-over action and a scroll mouse over the Top-panel tray icon. It's all gone. Need to say the new click-on is good too but it's without the mouse scroll or Mouse-Over INFO
How can I re-enable it please? Why should I click on RhythmBox player each time just to control volume
BUILT-IN MIC CEASED WORKING
Since upgrading to 10.04, only external mics work

I booted with a knoppix cd and both drives are found and contain data. What steps can I take to remount these drives and recover the data?

I would like to try the rawhide updates. If messed up my PC's couple of times so now before I do anything I would like to roll back changes and resort to last working kernel ( and related s/w) in case that fails . HOW do I do it? ( c.f Windows Last good session ) ALTERNATIVELY folks - is there a way you can backup and restore to full accuracy all your previous kernels .- I mean just inset the CD .It will identify the partitions , then it will ask you "where you want to restore them" and then it just restores the prev. image.

Is removing previous older kernels "vmlinuz", when updates do get a newer version an easy task, or do the more recent Linux like Ubuntu 9.10 do that automatically, and only keep a few older previous kernels ?

I have recently installed the Maverick backport kernel (2.6.35 - from the lucid-updates/main repo) and while I was at it I also manually (through synaptic) got rid of some old kernels. I made sure that I kept the current Lucid kernel though (that was working fine). All seemed well (although I didn't actually check - just no errors) so I rebooted. On reboot I have lost all my Ubuntu kernel options!
I rebooted with a live cd, mounted, etc and ran
Code:
sudo update-grub
but it doesn't seem to find any kernels!
Code:
grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/media/mnt /dev/sda
Checked /boot to see if the kernels are there:
Code:
jed@lightning:/boot$ ls
abi-2.6.32-31-generic memtest86+.bin
abi-2.6.32-32-generic System.map-2.6.32-31-generic
[code]....
Even reinstalled burg (used to use it but it got broken by a kernel update long ago and never bothered to fix it as I only use Linux these days anyway)Funny thing is that BURG finds the kernels and reports no problem, but then drops to the grub-error prompt on boot.

I have looked for existing threads on this issue, but found no matches, so I am starting a new one.I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop from a bought CD last year. When I later installed the kernel updtates with the Update Manager, I noticed the the list of versions growing when I booted up. Then something horrible happened. After installing maybe the third or fourth kernel update, I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, it failed every time. After that I left Ubuntu broken on my laptop for a while.I have now reinstalled from the CD again However, I am now very wary when it comes to installing even the important security updates, never mind the recommended ones! I prefer to keep it simple, because I don't want to do any more reinstalls for a while. So far I have just one kernel headers update on the boot list, and I am trying to figure out how to remove the previous one. I do not see the point in having a growing list of them again.

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.
Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.

the nfs transfer bugs out in (and then freezes the box totally up, so that only pressing the reboot button on the pc itself helps anymore):

Code:
sudo modprobe -r lirc_imon
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules-source
sudo modprobe lirc_imon
after which all is well. this of course is a problem that DKMS should solve for me but it doesn't do it. also i get this message in my messages log:

I have kernel 2.6.26 and I think I need 2.6.27, but update manager says my system is up-to-date. How do I get an upgraded kernel? I have a wireless card but I cannot find anything in the UI to enable it, or connect to my home net. Would Debian come with a connection manager with an oddball name?

I was running 8.04 and my internet (Comcast) comes via a Motorola SB5100 cable modem then into a Netgear router then into my Dell. When I upgraded to 10.04 yesterday, I lost the wired connection. The wireless connection still works fine, but I have not been able to get a wired connection. Also, most online solutions reference the Network Manager, which is nowhere to be found.
Anyone have any solutions? I would be willing to revert to 8.04 if needed, as that worked fine, and obviously I quite regret the upgrade!

Ubuntu and other Linux distros have a limited useful life, for example Ubuntu only supports its current release until April 2012. If I decide to upgrade at that time, are my customizations lost, also add on software lost e.g. Codeweavers Crossover Office, and software running inside Crossover, etc.?

I run Debian with Gnome on a beat up workhorse ThinkPad. I upgraded to Jessie last week with just one issue. Before the upgrade, I could plug in a USB drive (I use a couple of WD MyPassports most often) and they would mount, read, and write without a hitch.
Since the upgrade, when I plug in a USB drive, the file manager (3.14.1) sees the drive, but when I click on the drive to access/mount it, I receive a dialog box reading: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Error when getting information for file '/media/user/MyPassport1': Input/output error.
If I hit the little “eject” button in the file manager, then mount the drive as root from a command prompt [e.g., mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external] I can run a directory of the drive, but ls -l /media/external fails. From the command prompt I am unable to perform reads or writes to the drive.
Rebooting into recovery mode (i.e., without Gnome), I get the same behavior with CLI messages reporting I/O errors with the drive. I can run a directory, but ls -l, reads, and writes fail.
This behavior is the same on all three USB ports. It is not limited to these MyPassport devices.
The drives work flawlessly on another headless machine upgraded to Jessie the same day. And on another still running Wheezy.
If I boot the ThinkPad from a live CD (Mint 14, I believe) the USB drives mount, read, and write fine.
My BIOS is up to date, 1.52.
lspci -v says this about USB ports:
Code: Select all00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20f0
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
I/O ports at 1880 [size=32]
Capabilities: [50] PCI Advanced Features
Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd

I want to install (or compile myself) a previous kernel release (2.6.31.13). Where can I get it?
I mean a Debian Kernel with all your patches etc.
I'm using Debian Unstable. I just noticed that it was the quickest kernel (well, maybe for me only and my hardware).
