I just installed kernel version 2.6.26-rc2.5.1, but "uname -r" is still giving me 2.6.36-rc2-5-default. Am I booting with the new kernel? How can I tell? If not, how do I create a new boot option?
View 9 RepliesI'm trying to solve a kernel bug discussed in /show_bug.cgi?id=24002. One clue is that the problem does not occur when the kernel used by the installer for 11.4 is booted. Can any one tell me how to strip down the vanilla kernel to produce the installer kernel? Perhaps if I can strip down the vanilla kernel one step at a time then I can find the bug.

This is my first post to this forum! I'm just getting into openSUSE and really excited to get involved in it. I have a MacBook running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) that I triple booted using Disk Utility. I installed openSUSE, (not WFindows yet), and have it set up to load using reFIT. reFIT can see that openSUSE is installed, but when I choose to load it it displays the following error message:
"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" I have the feeling there is something very simple I'm doing wrong I know this post isn't extremely detailed to please let me know whatever other information I should provide.
On a new install of Fedora 12, I did the online update (using PackageKit). However, though the new kernel with images are seen in /etc/boot it still boots into the old kernel:

recently I have installed a brand new machine with 11.2. Machine boots so incredibly fast so I decided to upgraded another older machine from 11.1 to 11.2. Upgrade went fine but old machine boots significantly slower. On new I see message "doing fastboot" and few seconds later KDE starts loading. Amazing. On old I just experience regular boot, speed is comparable to old 11.1.What am I missing after upgrade? Same kernel, almost same set of services. Both machines are pretty regular PCs/x86_64, however old one have faster/better hardware (more cores, more GHz, more RAM, 2 disks in software raid-0).

Workstation - starts all and everything but no hostap nor xend (run this at home)
Workstation traveller - starts like Worksation except networking (run this in the pub
Xen host - run this preparing some training courses
Xen host HOSTAP - run this having the training course with a WiFi net for the class
I came from Gentoo recently and there is such a possibility. It is relatively simple to put a kernel option which the kernel does not recognize at the boot prompt. Such not recognized options will be sent through to init (and thus to the SysV init scripts) by the kernel and I could script this. What I am looking for is a the "official" way on Debian to do such things.
I just rebooted from an yum update, which updated my kernel 2.6.31-something to kernel 2.6.32-whatever-is-up-to-date-in-testing. My disk layout was LVM2+encrypted root. When I rebooted it prompted me for the encryption password as always. After I entered the correct password the loading screen (progress bar) finishes up as usual. Then, the screen is black.
It just stays in console resolution, but its just black. No typing, no chars, no X-mode, no errors, no VT-switches, nothing... just black. I remember to have started at 2.6.27-something and never had to kernel-update problems, so I dont know why it's annoying me now with todays update. I cant work with the machine any more.
I upgraded to version 11.4 and now I can not install any application. Not YAST or zypper downloaded RPMs.Firefox and Konqueror can not download links that are rpm. I do not understand what happens. Ties other than rpm, if fully discharged. I tried as root and nothing.

In the Ubuntu gnome desktop I do know how to find that easy, so what tool or terminal command will display the current running kernel version ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.
I upgraded from the 32-bit to the 64-bit openSUSE 11.4. My KDE desktop is gone from my log in options. How do I get it back?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.
Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.
I just upgraded the kernel from 2.6.32-24 to 2.6.32-25. When it was finished it logged me out of XFCE without warning (is that normal)? Now if I try to log in to XFCE the screen goes blank and I just get returned to the login screen. I can log in to GNOME however. I get the same problem if I boot into -24 or -25.

But when I try to use certain apps, it just sits there in the taskbar trying to load for a couple minutes, then automatically closes itself. Specifically I've noticed the nvidia x-server menu and open office doing this, while they both worked fine before I upgraded the kernel. some apps will do this, while others will work fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.
This the second time it has happened after the security upgrade to kernel 2.6.31-19 with a clean shut down it goes into the grub menu and will not boot.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded a PC from 10.04.1 to 10.10 and it will not boot into the new kernel. Because the system started as Ubuntu 7.10, it is using Grub 1.
It gets to the point where it displays "Starting up..." then displays a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, it does nothing further.
Yet it will boot into the previous kernel from the 10.04.1 installation, but X will crash if I login using the XFCE desktop, yet it will log into LXDE without a problem.
Is this a known issue (not booting up with new kernel)?
The CPU is an AMD Athlon 32-bit which does have CMOV (per cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have also manually run various apt-get commands to upgrade/update everything, no change resulted.
just blew away a Windows 7 install (yeah!) to install 11.3 64-bit and when my desktop booted, it shows "Greg Zenitsky (greg) on ubuntu" at the top of the application launcher. Where did that come from and how do I fix it. I looked through all the user account screens in Yast. but could not locate it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
When I first did my install of Slackware 13.37, I installed the 2.6.38.4 kernel from /testing.
I did a "upgradepkg testing/kernel*.t?z"
Well just now I realized that there was a kernel-headers package in /testing, and I've heard that you should only use the kernel headers that glibc was compiled with.
So did I make a mistake installing the kernel-headers from /testing?
And if I revert back to the stock kernel-headers package, will I have to recompile all the programs I've compiled with the 2.6.38.4 headers?
For portability reasons; I am building a standalone kickstart ISO; based of Cent5.2. I am to the point where I can load my ks file (linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg), it reads it fine; and performs the install as I want.
Where I am having a problem; is a good way to have the install use upgraded RPM's, not the base; specifically a kernel with a few needed tweaks in it; which is packaged in an rpm.
I attempted to place my kernel rpm's into the CentOS directory and rerun creatrepo; but I simply managed to corrupt the base repo on the install media.
i am having quite a problem after upgrading my karmic to an 2.6.33 kernel and trying to do an nfs transfer.
the nfs transfer bugs out in (and then freezes the box totally up, so that only pressing the reboot button on the pc itself helps anymore):

I upgraded to 2.6.35-30.56 last night and now my system's a little flaky. Everything seems to be running ever-so-slightly slower and fullscreen flash is now choppy. The weird thing is the Grub menu upon bootup only shows the latest kernel, but not the previous kernels. Doing an "ls" of the /boot folder only shows this newest kernel. I'd like to revert back to the previous kernel but don't know how.
