Ubuntu :: Which Kernel Should Be Downloaded For Mainline
Sep 8, 2010
I'm looking for some guidance on how to install a mainline kernel. I opened a ticket for a problem I'm having here: [URL]. It was suggested to me that I go here for instructions on how to install the mainline kernels: [URL]. However, when I go there, it explains what to download if you have 32 bit intel (i386) or AMD 64 bit (amd64), but does anyone know what I should download if I need an x86_64 (64bit 10.04 lucid) kernel? Is it i386? Wouldn't that just be 32 bits? I have a Dell e6510 laptop running 64 bit lucid (10.04 - kernel 2.6.32-23) on an Intel Core i5. My laptop stopped working when the 2.6.32-24 kernel was downloaded and installed through the update manager.

i am having quite a problem after upgrading my karmic to an 2.6.33 kernel and trying to do an nfs transfer.
the nfs transfer bugs out in (and then freezes the box totally up, so that only pressing the reboot button on the pc itself helps anymore):
Code:
Feb 26 22:31:24 localhost kernel: [ 3964.123290] INFO: task rdesktop:10331 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Feb 26 22:31:24 localhost kernel: [ 3964.123292] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
[Code].....

I've never understood the difference between these terms in http://www.kernel.org:
- snapshot
- mainline
- stable
- longterm
It's not in Kernel's FAQ and I can't find about it on Google.

I unlike before where when I select Ubuntu at boot up time and it just goes into it I am getting this black screen called GNU GRUB. What do I do here? Has Linux got corrupted by the updates I downloaded?

I'm looking at the mainline kernel PPA, and it seems to be somewhat abandoned. for example, the repository sources don't even contain a karmic section, let alone lucid:[url]
My main concern is, I'd like to rebuild the most recent kernel package with a custom patch on lucid, but without a source repository, I can't do apt-get source, and thus I can't get the .dsc file for the pacakge..how / where could I do that?

after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

I downloaded, through the torrent, the Pink Floyd's Live in Gdansk concert. It first downloaded as an ISO and when I unzipped I now have 5 CD folders with bin files in them. I've searched and followed many different instructions to open the bin files but nothing is working. How to be able to listen to the music?

I have downloaded the Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 iso about a week ago, and it's in the same folder as Wubi. It keeps trying to download another image even though the one is in the same folder. The image is not corrupted. How can I use the pre-downloaded iso?

I went through and downloaded quite a few different media players, looking for one that would play this DVD. Well, I finally found one that worked, but now I can't remember which one it is, so I don't know which ones to remove. I want a media player that allows me to watch DVD's, listen to MP3/4's, watch all different types of movie files, make play lists, etc. Here's the list of what I have installed:
Amarok
Banshee
Dragon Player
Freevo
Kaffeine
Movie Player
Movie Player Totem (xine backend)
Rhythmbox
VLC Media Player
So, which ones can I get rid of, and which one(s) should I keep?

Recently I installed airlines-themes, using the command
Code: sudo aptitude install airlines-theme It worked perfectly. My question is where are all these packages downloaded locally, so that if needed I can install them later without an Internet connection. Not just theme, I can do it for other application as well (for eg. ubuntu tweak and many others).

I'm trying to make a boot-able CD from a downloaded 10.04 (amd64) iso file. I downloaded the iso file and burned the CD according to the instructions on the ubuntu site. The CD would not boot and the only message was ISOLINUX .... then the computer shut down. Re-downloaded the iso file, re-burned CD, same result. Installed new CD drive, re-burned, same result. What I'm I missing? I'm fairly new to Linux but have been using 8.04-10.04 for about six months. I'm trying to make a boot-able Live CD so I can do a clean install on a new HD.

Whenever I download a .doc file I send to myself and open it in OpenOffice via Ubuntu 10.04, it opens as a read-only that I "do not have the rights" to alter. This is obnoxious, because then I have to copy and paste the entire thing, which can lead to format issues, before I can continue to work on the document.

I am very new at Ubuntu, I only recently changed over from windows cause my computer was infested with a bagillion viruses. I have been trying to customize all my displays and I found a bunch of theme's for my login screen at the gnome web page, but i cant figure out how to implement them. It took me long enough to figure out how to change my desktop, but it seems there is no easy way to change the login screen. I got Ubuntu tweak, but that only allows you to change the background and the button, I was hoping to find a way to use the ones downloaded from the web. Does anyone know hpow to easily apply a gnome theme to your ubuntu login screen/boot menu?

Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.
I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?
Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.
