Just did a fresh install of karmic due to problems with 10.04 and then 10.10. The new install sees the net ok, firefox and thunderbird work perfectly. however, updates not working. When i do sudo apt-get update it just hangs. When i open the ubuntu software center, nothing is available. Help urgently required, as I can't operate without a number of software packages I now cannot install

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.
After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I'm able to use apt-get and do updates.I cannot go to any webpages except debian.org.The same thing happened when I first installed linux mint debian 2010 on this same machine.Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6105/VT6106S [Rhine-III]Lenny was installed on this machine and I was able to go to any website.Do you think this will be fixed when Squeeze is officially released?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI accidentally removed my network manager (gnome) from my system (via synaptic) and hence have not been able to have access to the internet to reinstall the packages. I have experimented with many commands (with help from others) in terminal with little success.
What I now did was downloaded a 'NetworkManager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file and a 'NetworkManager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from a different comp) and have placed them onto my desktop. I have read the INSTALL instructions within and it is a tad complex for me as I am new to Linux. I understand I have to extract the files and compile them into a new folder (I think I would choose a file in the /home directory)- how would I go about doing this? Following this, I need to './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' the files
Fresh install without a desktop environment, I only selected "standard software utilities" from the software selection step of the installation process, nothing else is installed thereafter.
I cannot follow these instructions [URL] .... because "auto" and "iface" commands not found.
iptables isn't installed, but I want to install nftables since it's what iproute2 is to net-tools.
And it doesn't even have NetworkManager either and so far I found out ifconfig (net-tools) has been dropped in favor of iproute2, although that is just what Wikipedia says.

I just checked, net-tools is also installed, but ifconfig command not found?
On one machine is upgraded from F7 to F10: no problems. On my second machine, I did a fresh install. I can connect to the internet via KPPP, but both Firefox & Konqueror fail to recognize that I'm online. I tried to create a network modem connection, but when I select "new" & "modem", then press the "forward" button, nothing happens.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set a kickstart DVD for automatically installing Fedora 10 without touching the existing data partitions on our systems. I've got a kickstart file that works great from a kickstart server however I'm having issues with creating an unattended kickstart DVD. I've attached a copy of the kickstart file from the DVD. For some reason even though all the packages we are installing are on the DVD, anaconda always attempts to connected to the internet to get repository information after completing the partitioning. I have changed the install type to 'cdrom' before anyone asks! I have removed my %pre and %post sections as these just copy in some config files and do not touch anything other than local paths.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI work for AT&T and our Windows-centric workgroup is being tasked with supporting an app running on RedHat. To help my coworkers, I'm building a Fedora 11 VM that we can play with to familiarize ourselves with the UNIX environment.
Because of corporate network policies in place, my VM can't get access to the Internet.
Since we're AT&T employees, we're naturally using the korn shell on the production system. I'd like to install the korn shell on my VM. However, it doesn't appear to be part of the base fedora repository.
Is the korn shell available for Fedora? If so, how would I copy it to shiny media, mount it on my VM, and install it?
I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
I connected my laptop running with Ubuntu 11 in the LAN but I couldn't access internet.But I could ping to the other computers connected in the LAN. I tried the same thing with windows 7 in the same laptop and I could access internet.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my WinXP laptop. The laptop is a Compaq v2552us.
In windows mode, the internet works plenty fast.
In Ubuntu, I can't download a single update for hardware drivers or for ubuntu (it says there are 74 though).
It starts to DL, but max speed is about 800B/s, but that only last for a couple seconds before it switches to unknown. I am connected to my wireless router via cable, can't even get wireless to work (I suspect the aforementioned hardware drivers, which is why I need this to work).
My internet works when I'm using chrome BUT when I try and use the 'software center' or the 'update manager', I keep getting a Check your internet Connection error. How can I use the net in chrome but ubuntu cannot get out there? I'm using UBUNTU 10.10 with Virtual Box and win7 is the host.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

I have an old FC2 box running Squid version 2.5. It has been running since 2003 so I am in the process of replacing it. I have a new machine with FC11, iptables, and Squid 3.0 installed.
On the old machine I use iptables to intercept Port 80 traffic and send it to Squid. By default I block all internet access and allow only sites that are in an Allowed_Sites.txt file. Within Squid I also have statements to allow certain users to bypass Squid based on their IP address.
I have set up the same thing on the new box. I have iptables intercepting the Port 80 traffic and sending it to Squid. That is working because if I remove the redirect statement from iptables all internet access is blocked.
The problem I am having is that Squid is not blocking any websites. It acts like the ACL is set to http_access allow all. I have worked on this for several hours and am stumped.

I have a Rogers mobile Internet stick. When I plug it into a Windows laptop, it installs software that manages Internet. Would I be able to get Internet if I plugged it into my server running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS? What do I need to do to download Apache Web server onto my Ubuntu? I searched for Apache in Software Center but no results I'm not connected to the Internet so no packages updates so far.

Tried an alternate cable (which was working with a desktop Winows XP computer) between router and laptop. Still no internet. Used terminal to ping the IP address of the router - ping unsuccessful.

I recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

When I access some websites, especially certain forums or atempt to post, the tab seems to be loading but doesn't do anything. If I then exit firefox I cannot ping anything (IP or address) in terminal. If I then open Epiphany it fixes everything until firefox next does this. This is happening from 1 - 10 times an hour and is starting to get to me.
I installed ubuntu 10 just yesterday. Everything was working just fine. The auto-update function advised me to download and install the latest updates and so I did. It was over 300 MB. I installed it, did a reboot and my internet connection was lost. I tried a few things I found on this forum yesterday. Nothing worked. I can go on-line on the same computer using windows 7. But I always have to reboot to try the different solutions. All right that's fixed! But now I just have to fix Firefox...

** How do I prevent various pieces of software trying to access the net for updates etc. I presume they are likely to hang, lock up, and generally cause trouble.
** Can anyone recommend a working practice for installing updates and/or new software, either from USB or CDROM/DVD? I have good (legitimate!) access to assorted computer facilities at my office. I am using 11.04
Suse 11.2 > updated Feb 2 using the Update UI applet.
I had internet connectivity prior to installing the updates. Now I can't reach the internet since installing the updates. I can reach my router, log in to the router I also ping the router but I can not ping the WAN side ip on the router.
When I boot into redmond, no issues, which is what I'm using as I write this.
I have security enabled, WPA2 Personal, not that I think that is an issue as I can reach the router, my server, network printers, and PC's.
I am running a Linksys router but have replaced the standard Linksys software with DD-WRT v24-sp2 build date 12/28/09 std. One note, DD-WRT does hand out IpV6 address but I have disabled FF from using IpV6 address along with the network connection configuration applet from accepting them. (I don't remember the applets name)
In the redmond world this would be a certificate error, is this the same type of an issue? If so how do I fix it?
