Ubuntu :: Firefox Kills Internet Temporarily After Updates Today

Sep 9, 2010

Using ubuntu 9.10 Karmic 64 bit
Firefox version: 3.6.9 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0
about:config is default
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.9) Gecko/20100825 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.6.9

When I access some websites, especially certain forums or atempt to post, the tab seems to be loading but doesn't do anything. If I then exit firefox I cannot ping anything (IP or address) in terminal. If I then open Epiphany it fixes everything until firefox next does this. This is happening from 1 - 10 times an hour and is starting to get to me.

Fedora :: Wireless Won't Connect After Today's Updates?

Oct 23, 2010

I did a "yum update" today. I love how every time, it's like a waiting game to see what broke.Anyway, aside from a weird Nvidia issue that doesn't concern me, the most noticeable problem is that my wireless will NOT connect to my WPA2 network. This laptop is the only machine that changed. The other laptops and wireless devices (smartphones, etc) didn't change. It sees all of the available wireless networks. It attempts to connect, but never does. After a short period of time, a dialog box appears, stating that authentication is required... The password is correct, it just won't connect. Here's a copy of the Yum log... I do see that NetworkManager has been updated, along with the kernel being updated.*sigh*

Code:
Oct 23 14:57:23 Updated: kernel-headers-2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686
Oct 23 14:58:32 Installed: kernel-devel-2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 Updates Yesterday/Today Cause Packet Loss On Networking

Apr 9, 2010

I have 3 Dell Precision M4400 machines. After getting updates yesterday or today, I get random network dropouts like crazy, on wired or wireless. On one machine I was able to turn off ipv6 in grub and reboot, and it works now. However on the other 2 machines, still have the same problems. All 3 are running 9.10 64 bit. Is there a way I can back out the updates so the network works again? Anyone else see this behavior after updates today?

Fedora :: Firefox Kills F13 Even In Safe Mode ?

Aug 13, 2010

On my friend's fedora 13 install, firefox was working, it seems, until the recent kernel update (kernel is now 2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686).

After the upgrade, opening firefox would crash the system shortly after starting, so firefox was re-installed (once using rpm, once using yum).

After a re-install of firefox (using yum: firefox version is now 3.6.7) and Until a reboot, the repeated error report went something like this:

After checking to see if the flash plugin was still around and then doing a hard re-boot, however, just opening firefox immediately freezes the system.

Konqueror will run (albeit rather lamely)

In that I don't know the schedule for f13 kernel updates, if indeed the new kernel is causing this problem, does f13 save old kernels? How do I get the older kernel to start (with fc9 the option could be set in grub, or I could startx from a terminal but I have not been keeping up and am not sure how to do this.

I see there are many firefox issues lately...

Is there any way to temporarily "switch off (and back on)" the internet connection on a system (that runs linux)? The following methods are not allowed:Turning off the router. General :: Temporarily Throttle Internet Connection For Testing Purposes?

Mar 16, 2009

I would like to know if it is possible (and, if so, how I would go about doing so) to temporarily limit my Internet connection on a Linux box.

I am developing some new features for one of my Web sites, and I want to see how it performs when using a slower Internet connection. Although it's great for most aspects of my job to have a lightning-fast connection (around 25000-30000 kbps download and 20000-25000 kbps upload speeds), it really makes it difficult to know even what average users might experience when using some of the aspects of our Web site.

I have Linux Mint installed in VirtualBox on my computer, and I'd like to find some way to potentially temporarily "trick" that installation into using a much slower connection to the Internet for testing purposes.

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Network Activity Kills Internet Speed

Jul 13, 2009

I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background. This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.

I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: SLOW Updates And Internet ?

Sep 11, 2010

I just installed dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my WinXP laptop. The laptop is a Compaq v2552us.

In windows mode, the internet works plenty fast.

In Ubuntu, I can't download a single update for hardware drivers or for ubuntu (it says there are 74 though).

It starts to DL, but max speed is about 800B/s, but that only last for a couple seconds before it switches to unknown. I am connected to my wireless router via cable, can't even get wireless to work (I suspect the aforementioned hardware drivers, which is why I need this to work).

Ubuntu Networking :: Bizarre Wired Network - Download Updates And Firefox

Jun 3, 2010

I have a dual-boot Compaq CQ60-420US laptop. It can connect wirelessly in Vista without a problem. I have not yet figured out how to connect it wirelessly in Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid), but that's not the problem here. The problem here is on the wired side. Whether I boot in Vista or Ubuntu, I cannot get it to go online. Ubuntu says that the Auto eth2 connection is established; I am able to disconnect and reconnect it normally; but I can't download updates and Firefox can't connect to CNN.com. Likewise, in Vista, diagnostics find no problem; everything seems to be fine; but no connection.

I thought the problem might be the laptop's ethernet port, so I bought a Trendnet TU2-ET100 USB-to-Ethernet adapter. It comes highly recommended; it seems to have installed successfully in Vista; it appears properly in Vista's Network Connections; its lights are blinking appropriately; and Ubuntu tells me that my Auto eth2 connection is established when I connect through that adapter. And yet still no connection to CNN.com and no downloads of updates in either OS.

I wondered if some other circuitry might be at issue, so I sent the laptop back to HP. They claim to have replaced the mobo. The symptoms remain unchanged before and after. I went through an extensive tech support call with HP. The last thing their technician could advise was to power cycle the laptop and router. The ethernet connection itself is good. I can unplug the cable from the laptop's ethernet port or the Trendnet unit, plug it into the desktop computer on which I am typing this note, and I'm connected with no problem.

I thought, well, maybe I have to have the laptop's wireless button on, even when I want to connect via wire, but that hasn't made a difference. I tried installing Windows drivers from the Trendnet website instead of from the CD; no joy. I suspect you will be as stumped as I am. I have gone through a lot of other people's comments. At this point, I am just interested in general possibilities. What, in theory, could be causing this?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Cant Load After Firefox Updates / Comeing Up As A Misspelled Word In This Text Box?

Jan 12, 2010

Ubuntu Software upgrades indicated that there were some Firefox updates available. While updating, computer screen went blank and froze up. I manually shutdown and after restarting, Ubuntu no longer loads. It goes through some steps but then it goes to a login/password prompt. After putting in a login and password it takes me to, what I think is "Terminal".

I am a newbie, but I love to learn. I'm reading the Pocket Guide right now. I have many questions. What can I do at the "Terminal" prompt? An even better question is: When I have a problem after an install or update, can I do a "recovery" to before the install/update? If I continue to have problems, is there a way to recover the OS without losing saved data?

I'm hoping that I will learn a lot from the Pocket guide. I think that Ubuntu is going to be the OS of the future.

Why does "Ubuntu" still come up as a misspelled word in this text box?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Internet Connection For Updates And To Customise System?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Turned Off Automatic Updates Before Ever Connecting To The Internet?

Sep 12, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.

After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. For example, near the top of the list of 315 updates:
