I am trying to install Ubuntu to a computer with out an Internet connection and I need a way to get the updates on it. So I have a two part question how do I backup or save the updates I normally get from the update manager to a file or disk and how do I install them on the computer without the internet connection?

When i do sudo apt-get update it just hangs. When i open the ubuntu software center, nothing is available. View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Dial-up Internet connection. I turned off automatic updates before ever connecting to the Internet. When I checked for updates manually a few days ago, forty-some files downloaded. A few of them were quite large, perhaps a megabyte or two. Several of the files near the top of the list were marked as "Failed". There were no failures farther down the list.
After they were all downloaded, Update Manager tells me that 315 updates are available, under the two headings, "Important security updates" and "Recommended updates". The "Changes" box at the bottom of the window says that the list of changes failed to download. I ran the Update Manager again but it quickly told me (in effect) that there was nothing new since the previous check, and nothing more was downloaded. The descriptions of the updates are horribly inadequate. And I *am* looking at the long decriptions in the box at the bottom. For most updates the information is not adequate to determine what it does, whether it would have any effect on my particular system, or whether it would benefit me. Ive successfully set up Ubuntu on a desktop computer I got for free (because it�s RAM was half destroyed by a virus and the owner got a new one). I don�t have this computer connected to the internet but I can get the internet on my laptop�s built in wifi (from some random neighbour who has an unsecure WLAN). So, to install programs on Ubuntu I have to download the .deb or .ter.gz files from the laptop (winXP), copy them to a USB drive, transfer them to the Linux machine and install. Problem is, none have worked so far:

I run Elyssa and have a symbol of a padlock at the bottom right side. This is for updates on software. It tells me that I have 351 updates available. when I open this the updates are shown and each have a number.Mainly 2's and 3's. when I do press the install update button, it gives me the following message:
warning you are about to install software that can not be authenticated....
This message worries me so I have not done any updates for a loooooong time.
What shall I do? How can I tell what is malicious and what is not? does anyone out there know?
I remember back a few versions, you needed to take ownership of firefox in order for it to get updates and to save your settings. Is this needed in 10.10? Im giving Ubuntu a go again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a server which is in an isolated LAN onto which I would like to install some packages from the Ubuntu Repositories.I realise I can go to packages.ubuntu.com and download them one at a time following the dependencies through but this is a bit of a nightmare.Is there anyway I can use the -d option of apt-get to download the files on another machine so I can transfer the lot over in one go?It is probably important to note that the server is running 8.04.4 and the other machine I have run 9.10 and may or may not have said packages installed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Jaunty in my departmental machine which is having 70 GB harddisk and 512 MB RAM. Before installing I partitioned the Hard disk by using Gparted of Live CD into Four compartments namely
1. Primary partition of 30 GB of file type ext3
2. Extended partition of 39 GB which I divided again into two logical Partition of 20 GB and 19 GB. Labelled it as D and E
3. 1 GB of swap partition
I installed the Jaunty in primary partition, gave the mount point as /The problem is I am not able to copy or save file in the extended partition namely D and E
I'm trying to configure my /usr/share/ettercap/etter.dns for dns spoofing with ettercap. but when I change the file and try to save it ubuntu says permision deneight Even when I try doing this from the terminal with sudo. It seems there is know way to change the file.

The times I have done this in the past, the installations don't include recent updates which need to be downloaded and installed once the system is running. (Understandably)
Two questions:
1) Does Ubuntu update the downloadable ISO periodically to include recent updates?
...for example: Now that it is January (ie. some 3 months after release of Karmic in October '09 and some 200-300Meg+ of updates required since that time), will I be downloading an ISO from Ubuntu that has recent updates already as part of it, or will it still require updates to be downloaded and installed once Ubuntu is running on the computer?
2) If the downloadable ISO has not been updated since Oct '09, is there a way of making a LiveCD/bootable USB that has up-to-date updates already installed? (if you know what I mean?) ....and is this process relatively simple?
I have Alienvault (which is debian based) running on an offline network. I need to have a repo server on that network in order to provide updates/other installation sources. Currently I have configured Ubuntu Server 10.04 as an apt-mirror on an internet-connected network.
What I need to do is find a way to automatically take the newest updates, and export them to disk. I need to mirror the internet-connected-repo server on the offline-network side. But I don't want to burn all 40 gigs or so every time new updates come out. Basically, I'd like to perform incremental backups of the mirror after the first full backup. Is it possible to automate this daily?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I would like to know how can I save the Internet speed shown from the bmon program to a txt file.

Mainly because of the vastness of apt-get and the low risk of installation failure. Anyway, every so often I have a file that I want to process in place using some remote tool. Both machines can ssh right in to each other so I was figuring there must be some script or tool out there that would allow me to type out something like remote [file] [tool & args] to send my file to the other machine, get it processed, then get it back.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am in a VMware environment, and using RHEL 5.4. I am trying to setup a PXE Kickstart installation. For this I have configured DHCP and TFTP, made a kickstart file and shared it in the network through HTTP. My problem is that somehow kickstart file (ks.cfg) is not picked by the machine in which I am installing the OS. Although, the contents of my kickstart file can be viewed over HTTP. Please see KS_Error.jpg.

However, I believe DHCP and TFTP is working fine as I am getting the correct IP 192.168.1.115 which I have set in /etc/dhcpd.conf. Also, my label 1 which I have set in /tftpboot/linux-install/pxelinux.cfg/default is working fine as I able to locate initrd and vmlinuz. Please see attached Image_1.jpg how to troubleshoot this. I need to paste any of my configuration files?.
Now i install the Ubuntu 10.4 64 bit on Sunfire X4170I want to save the file via SSH to this server.But i m not sure how to configure.

I copy the content and save it as plain text in a file called unformatted (hope to be able to automate this step someday). Im working on a SED script that reduces unformatted to only display what I want to see and saves the result in a file Iïve named formatted. After that I have to manually copy formatted and save it with that days date as a filename e.g. 2011-02-25 or whatever day is scheduled in the pdf, for use on a mobile device (Nokia N900). I noticed that the date occurs on certain lines in the file so I added a line like:
sed -n 's/^Date: (201[1-9])/([0-1][0-9])/([0-3][0-9]).*/1-2-3/p' < unformatted >theDate
That creates a file theDate with the date in it that I wish to use as the filename for this particular instance. So I would like to skip the file formatted all together and have the sed- script write to a new file using the content of the Date as a filename, but how do I make that happen? And of course it would be more elegant if I could skip the intermediate theDate file as well.
Am using 10.04 and quite happy with the way it is working. my nephew and my mother have also switched to ubuntu.
To save on internet usage and load on the ubuntu servers, can i download upgrade files in one computer and then upgrade all systems?
I just installed dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my WinXP laptop. The laptop is a Compaq v2552us.
In windows mode, the internet works plenty fast.
In Ubuntu, I can't download a single update for hardware drivers or for ubuntu (it says there are 74 though).
It starts to DL, but max speed is about 800B/s, but that only last for a couple seconds before it switches to unknown. I am connected to my wireless router via cable, can't even get wireless to work (I suspect the aforementioned hardware drivers, which is why I need this to work).
My internet works when I'm using chrome BUT when I try and use the 'software center' or the 'update manager', I keep getting a Check your internet Connection error. How can I use the net in chrome but ubuntu cannot get out there? I'm using UBUNTU 10.10 with Virtual Box and win7 is the host.

File-> showed "Work Offline" checked. Unchecked it, but that didn't fix the problem. Rebooted, and still no internet. Tried an alternate cable (which was working with a desktop Winows XP computer) between router and laptop. Still no internet. Used terminal to ping the IP address of the router - ping unsuccessful.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.
