We are using xubuntu in a vpn environment where we dont have access to ubuntu/xubuntu update server. Is there anyway we can download updates from an outside source and install them via pendrive or other device.

Just did a fresh install of karmic due to problems with 10.04 and then 10.10. The new install sees the net ok, firefox and thunderbird work perfectly. however, updates not working. When i do sudo apt-get update it just hangs. When i open the ubuntu software center, nothing is available. Help urgently required, as I can't operate without a number of software packages I now cannot install

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've a server, and I want to drop all the traffic going out with other source port than 80 (apache) and 22(ssh). The reason is I want to prevent my machine sending packets I don't know (i.e. my server scanning networks or making DDOS attacks without my knowledge). The problem are the updates. If I do what I've said, the updates will not work. I want to allow updates, so I need to let DNS traffic (port 53) and the traffic of the updates to go out.
The problem is the source port. This traffic uses a dynamic port (I think like HTTP). Is there any way to specify a source port to do this? If a have a static port to do this, I would drop all the traffic going out with other port than 22,53,80 and this port.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I am an extremely new Ubuntu Server user. I am trying to install NFS on a new Ubuntu Server 10.10 installation. When running the command sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap, I was previously getting the message:

I would like to use my laptop at home, where I don't have internet access (don't ask, long story). My question are two-fold;
** How do I prevent various pieces of software trying to access the net for updates etc. I presume they are likely to hang, lock up, and generally cause trouble.
** Can anyone recommend a working practice for installing updates and/or new software, either from USB or CDROM/DVD? I have good (legitimate!) access to assorted computer facilities at my office. I am using 11.04
Since I've installed opensuse 11.4 instead of 11.3, I cannot install .rpm packages nor execute updates. I get the following message: "There has been a (probably temporarily) when connecting to the software source/repository" (own translation) details: Media source [URL] does not contain the desired medium So, probably there is something wrong with my software sources. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed CentOS 5, because I needed a good OS to run VMware Server. Just a heads up, I'm not very familiar with RH/CentOS distros, I usually use Arch Linux. My VMware install went fine, config is standard settings. Now I'm trying to access the VMware Infrastructure Web Access using port 8222 (http) and 8333 (https), but it's a no go. I'm connecting from another machine on the LAN, as the CentOS box is headless. I restarted the vmware services, and they seem to be launching fine. I don't know much about VMware though. I verified with netstat and ports 8222 and 8333 are listening.

The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

I'd like to be able to have these updated via the local network to conserve net bandwidth. Is it possible to setup a single system which will download updates I specify, then make them available to the other systems on my network via some kind of local repo?
Of course I'm not looking to download EVERY repo, just the essential updates to the core OS. I really just want to eliminate that 45 min/256 file download that takes place each time I install a new system.
I have some PCs still on Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop including one that's remote - I realise that desktop updates will be stopped from May 12th, but will the Server packages still be available to Desktop installations for the next 2 years? I believe that APT doesn't know the difference anyway.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm very new to Linux and Ubuntu (about 2 days) and am having a hard time getting Ubuntu to work. I'm not completely sure that I'm posting in the right forum since I have several issues. I can't tell what's causing what.
I'm using the wubi installer for version 10.10 (i386 - 32 bit). I have an AMD 64-bit, but the wubi installer for that only crashes when I try to boot it the very first time. I get a blank screen and my tower is silent. Version 10.04 does the same. Version 10.10 is the only one that gets me somewhere.
So, I installed ndiswrapper and the proper driver for my USB adapter. Now I have 2 main problems:
1). the most relevant to this board is that when I use the update manager to get all 135 updates, I'm prompted to reboot to complete the installation. When I do that, i get the same blank screen and silent tower treatment. Oddly enough however, when I went back to windows, uninstalled ubuntu, then reinstalled it again using wubi, the update manager said that I already updated an hour ago (!?!?.. I assume it's still reading the old files from the previous install attempt). Unfortunately I messed it up anyway trying to fix my second problem...
2). my internet connection fails here and there. I don't know if it's ndiswrapper or the driver or what. Once it fails, it won't reconnect. I have to go into ndiswrapper, delete the current driver and reinstall it. This has happened to me while on the internet (scouring these forums) and while downloading the updates and whenever it feels like it.
Also, the system does freeze up on me here and there as well. Sometimes when I'm using ndiswrapper. Sometimes when I'm authenticating myself. Sometimes in update manager and sometimes in synaptic. Right now it's working. But I haven't updated yet and I'm afraid to try.
There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?
