I'm able to use apt-get and do updates.I cannot go to any webpages except debian.org.The same thing happened when I first installed linux mint debian 2010 on this same machine.Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6105/VT6106S [Rhine-III]Lenny was installed on this machine and I was able to go to any website.Do you think this will be fixed when Squeeze is officially released?

I cannot follow these instructions [URL] .... because "auto" and "iface" commands not found.
iptables isn't installed, but I want to install nftables since it's what iproute2 is to net-tools.
And it doesn't even have NetworkManager either and so far I found out ifconfig (net-tools) has been dropped in favor of iproute2, although that is just what Wikipedia says.

I just checked, net-tools is also installed, but ifconfig command not found?
what would be the best way to get ssh access to my home PC which is running Squeeze? I could think of openvpn...and I have a vps ready at my disposal.

I myself work on two Debian installed computers, one with a D-Link DWA-547 (with ath9k wireless chipset) and one with an rt61 wireless chipset.Now, everything goes very smoothly, until the iMac is being used severely online. In those cases, unpredictable, the Debian computers both lose their internet, even though the network-manager still shows a full connection.There are two things I can do in these cases: either reconnect using the network-manager applet, or restart the TimeCapsule from the iMac. Both routines have full success.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
Debian 5.02 on an AMD 64. I removed iceweasel and installed Firefox. On my account, I can access the net ok from FF, but when I login as another user, I cannot get out.
During the iceweasel removal, I suddenly got dumped out. Trying to recover I ended up restarting the box. I then again went to the root and 'aptitude remove iceweasel' and it came back ok. Then I installed FF per [url]. This worked fine on my 32 bit laptop btw. I even added a guest acct and FF worked, but not so on my 64 bit box. Any ideas on where to go?
And the reason for FF was that some media was not playing with iceweasel as it was perhaps too old? I didn't think 3.06 was that old myself, but when I installed FF, the sites that weren't playing fired right up.
Over the past month my windows PC has been playing up, I therefore am using Debian on LiveCD to get used to Linux (before I wipe Windows completly). Ever since I downloaded Debian I havent been able to get the internet (wireless) working, well recently i have, but not for long... After 2 weeks or so of me pratting about, I found out sort of what the problem is, or how i can sort of solve it temporarly. My USB wireless card is Realtek RTL8187 and it recognizes it and works by default, Im sure its nothing to do with that, although KNetworkManager will never connect me, says Failed to decrpy WEP (in dmesg), even tho it's the correct HEX key, so I use Wireless Assistant 0.5.7 which does connect me, with the same key network-manager wont. Other than this I would manually set it and 'dhclient wlan0'.
So, to sort of get internet I will first connect to the network (obviously) and once connected, I will ping google.com, which usually will come back unknown host after a few secs, UNLESS I ping google, and quickly set the access point again, manually. So after i ping google i type "iwconfig wlan0 ap [ACCESSPOINT]" and google will reply, for roughly 3-5 seconds, and it dies again. After a few more frustrated days I decided I will test this to the max, so I simply spammed "iwconfig wlan0 ap [AP]; sleep 3; ect ect (over 50 times) and tried to update aptitude, epic fail. It took 3 attempts and over 20 mins to get 11% on packages (after i deleted the default sources.list and just added ftp server).
I personally think it's to do with the new Mac80211 drivers as the old ieee80211 stack drivers seemed fine for others and on BT3. Yesterday I downloaded Ubuntu to see if it would connect, it also uses Mac80211 drivers, but it DID connect with network-manager, but is very poor and dies after abt 20 secs max. Im not a big fan of Ubuntu but if worst came to worst I would have to install it (because crap net is better than none at all). My Windows PC is on the verge of death so I really could do with solving this.
Also, what older versions of debian, pref LiveCD's (if any) come with the old ieee drivers? If none what other Linux distro's (old or new) use the ieee drivers? (except BT3). Im quite new to linux so please dont mention compiling stuff, as the LiveCD doesnt have make by default. Also please note I can only access internet wireless so I cannot download extra stuff on wired net to see (although i could on Windows).
I want to disable internet connection on my laptop but I want to keep the local lan connection. What would be the less hasssle way ?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have and old PC and for last years i had Debian Lenny on that and it was working great but after the Squeeze release, i downloaded the first CD image and did a fresh installation but after this it boots up with no problem (i must say since in Squeeze installation the option of creating a floppy diskette was not working properly i use SuperGrubDisk2 to boot the Debian), but few seconds after logging in, the system hangs (or maybe only the X11 since i use a historic nVidia TNT2 Riva graphic card!).

I plan to only hook up the host to the internet for updates, upgrades and installations, although if I can, then I will make a Debian guest to test everything out and download the files from there and install everything on the host without even a single host connection point.
Is this the indomitable approach to intercommunication security? If not, then what haven't I thought of yet?
In the live CD, auto eth0 worked fine.After installation, it cannot connect.I am using vaio laptop VPCCW16FG, there is a known display bug therefore i am booting into the OS with 'nomodeset'.i have no access to the internet and cannot update repos, therefore i cannot work around the bug.

I've opted for this configuration as the server will become a firewall, traffic monitoring (sick of my windows machine getting hacked). I've spent a lot of time and I don't seem to have any un-clicked links in google left. I've read quite a few howtos and threads on this site and others ... I'm definitely missing something. I've also installed hostapd, and attempted a few things in there. Long run I want to allow wifi users to access the net. But will probably need iptables etc but just want to pass this step. I've see a few howtos seem to use ath0. It's probably only a minor issues.

This topic began in the Debian Development forum here I have successfully completed both the install and the after installation configuration. I have a fully functional system on this little baby, inspite of the fact that wireless (Broadcom bcm4312), ethernet (Realtek) and sound were initially broken.
There is a lot of assistance out there on the web. In the previous thread, I was having trouble installing any debian on a usb stick. The issues that needed resolving were 1. Bad stick
2. Incompatible kernels between boot.img and .iso
3. The method of copying .iso to the stick that finally worked was wget My first successful usb install was Lenny. Even though I upgraded the stock system with lenny-backports, I could not get wireless, ethernet or sound working the only connection I could get to the internet was through my 3g stick and that was not performing up to it's capability. I manually configured wvdial to get that working.
I attempted an upgrade to squeeze several times and each time the upgrade trashed the system. I finally found squeeze boot.img and .iso files from an eee pc blog. This allowed a fresh install of Squeeze and I was making progress. The little atom processor would not handle the b43-fwcutter driver, so I compiled one from the Broadcom site written especially for the atom processor. Now I had cable broadband supplied wireless. I got my ethernet working with help from the Gnome site technical specs on Network Manager. Simply changing ifupdown=false to ifupdown=true in the network manager config file.
Sound was activated by help from a blog entitled "Debian on the Dell Mini 9" My head is spinning now or I would be more specific and instructive on all I did to get this baby up and running. If anyone asks, I may do a how-to.

Debian Lenny worked just great. That was my first experience of Debian. The installer recognised all my hardware and the system was soon up and running brilliantly with a few tweaks. Confident of Debian's reliability, I decided to move to Debian 6 and did a fresh install, with downloads of the new operating system rather than a distribution upgrade. The installation routines have not worked for the same computer system. I don't know if its hardware not being recognised by Debian 6 that were recognised without a problem by Debian 5??
At first, the boot-up flipped at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated," there was a kernal panic then Debian disappeared. No signal was sent to the monitor and I had to switch off the computer manually
I was able to look into the Debian 6 OS from Arch Linux, installed on different partitions of the same hard-drive. I am able to overwrite the Debian files as root from Arch.
My i686 machine has PATA IDE drives.
Why are 2) dbus and the 3) avahi-demon failing? I need to get them started first so that I can get an internet connection and try and correct the problem with X and the wrong Nvidia driver. Is there some configuration I can do either from Arch, where I am now, or the bash prompt on Debian? Thanks in advance.
First time user who has just picked up a nice old Sony netbook to give Debian a try on. Only problem is, this little thing doesn't come with any form of Ethernet card or port, and has to rely on a USB D-link DWA 140 B1 Rev Dongle. This device identifies itself as the Type RT2870 device and when i do "lsusb", it comes out as RALink RT2870. Running the CD install of Lenny, Kernel 2.6.26-2-686, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this damn Wireless card working.
The Wiki tells me to look into Upping the kernel to 2.6.32, which unfortunately requires some form of internet access for the backports Also consulted and tried (unsuccessfully, the make command would not run properly) this guy's advice: [URL].... I have started a newly started a VPN-service with some friends and are offering both OpenVPN and PPTP-vpn.The OpenVPN works perfectly, but we have some problem with the PPTP.It is possible to connect to the VPN, but once connected you can't get any type of access to the outside world ( the interner ).I've googled (Ok, not I, but the tech-guy has) and havn't found any solution so therefor we try here.We are running Debian 5.0 on a XEN VPS.On the machines we've tested OpenVPN works like a charm.

I get to the package selection section of the Debian Installer and I de-select "Desktop Environment" & "Standard System" so nothing is selected and it still be default installs Exim. Is there a way to omit this from the install?

Every time after I installed new ubuntu release, I have to replace the xorg.conf to fix the resolution problem b/c I got 800 x 600 screen only. However, after the 10.04 installation. I only got 1/2 of the screen of resolution. I cannot even see most of my terminal screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using debian lenny.When I boot with kernel 2.6.36, ping always respond with Network is Unreachable. But when I boot with kernel 2.6.26 it works. I can't even ping the dafault router of 2.6.26 kernel when I am at 2.6.36. Also, system/administration/network does not show any connections while it shows something at the other kernel.

Running 'apt-get update' I see that diffs are downloading with a normal speed (11.3 Mbyte by 49 seconds = ~ 227 Kbyte/sec - it's OK, my 'up' limit is 384 Kbyte/sec). But - running 'apt-get dist-upgrade' I see that packages are downloading w/ around 4000 byte/sec. WTF? What's the difference between downloading packages' diffs and packages themselves?
I've changed 6 mirrors - from oficcial (ftp.us.debian.org) to local (ftp.mgts.by). I've tried netselect-apt - no result. Still normall speed on 'apt-get update' and terrifying speed on 'apt-get dist-upgrade'.
Are there any special steps I'd need to take to install Squeeze AMD64 on a server with two quad-core Xeons? I had no issues installing Server 2003 x64 and XP Pro x64 on the box, but I seem to remember seeing something somewhere about XenServer in the kernel images.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed sqeeze on a netbook. Having no optical drive, I created a usb install disk with unetbootin on a laptop running Squeeze stable and the "Debian 6.0.1a DVD 1" iso. Much to my suprise it installed KDE. I expected, and wanted, Gnome. At the tasksel section I checked off "Graphical Desktop Env", "Laptop", and "Standard Sysytem Utilities". I found a similar post regarding this: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=60040 But in this case the OP installed with a netinstall iso and concluded a faulty mirror was the cause. This doesn't make sense in my case as I was using a DVD image which contains, afaik, Gnome, XFCE, and KDE
There surely must be a way to explicitly choose which desktop env. one wants installed. I realize this can be done by doing a base install and using apt-get; but I'm thinking there must be a simpler way using the installer. I tried the "Expert" install and only saw the generic "Graphical Desktop" option again. I figure I must be missing something somewhere. Also, can I get apt-get to recognize my unetbootin stick as a source to fetch from? I tried apt-cdrom and different entries in sources.list but I can't figure it out. It seems wasteful to me to download hundreds of MBs of packages from a mirror when I have them locally.
Trying to install squeeze again and everything has gone ok including network connection & partitioning & retrieved 916 packages from mirror.
But now installation has stopped completely at: Configuring ca-certificates
And will not proceed further.
I'm new to the Debian, but not to Linux. I've previously used Ubuntu for a few years, so I know something about how a successful installation should look like. I'm currently using Windows 7.
I downloaded the debian-6.0.3-amd64-gnome-netinst.iso from [URL] ...., and then made a USB pendrive using the Windows version of Unetbootin. The MD5 sum for the .iso-file was the correct one, b663727d7f5b572c329cea8e2ff5e29c.
I used the usual non-graphical setup, without any special options. The installation process went without hiccups until the "Starting up the partitioner" -screen freezes at "Scanning disks...". The bar stops at 50%. It never progresses any farther, even after an hour. It doesn't give any errors either. After I pressed Alt+F4, the last lines were:

Exactly the same happens with firmware-6.0.3-amd64-netinst.iso too, or any of the live versions I tried. The result of graphical installation was also nothing. The USB pendrive created by LinuxLive USB Creator was nonoperative in exactly the same way.
The computer is brand new, without any previous OS installations. My desktop computer has the following parts:

I've tried to uninstall gnome as below :
