Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Open /dev/sda/ And More
Aug 12, 2011
After attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 (both 86 and 64) from a disc, I get the following errors on the 'Ubuntu 11.04' (underneath: dots) screen.
Code:
unable to open /dev/sda/
unable to open /dev/sdb/
and eventually...
Code:
No init found. try passing init= bootarg. After which I am thrown into 'BusyBox' (initramfs) ash.
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K
HDDs: 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB on AHCI (tried IDE and a RAID0 array)
GFX: HD Radeon 6970 2GB
RAM: 4GB (2x2) Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600Mhz @ 1333Mhz
The 86 disc lets me try ubuntu, and even begin installing it... but fails at the part where it must install a bootloader. I'm guessing that my drives either don't exist as SDA/SDB, or haven't been set up correctly.
i just upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 now when I try to play m3u stream file it keep saying Your input can't be opened:VLC is unable to open the MRL blahblah... It's annoying at this stage i shouldn;t get this kinda problem.. on 10.04 i play m3u perfectly after upgrade and restart the problem started.. everything else works fine. I hate the idea of using virtual box to play some stream video on winamp or dual boot.
I tried to install google earth, java and some other softwares using bleedingedge. Then process was successful, I restarted my computer.I was unable to open google earth.I tried to open synaptic and got the msg to run "dpkg --configure -a" manually.I did it.Again now I am trying to open synaptic, getting this" E: The package sun-java6-jre needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report."what should I do???
I have successfully installed ns-2.29 on ubuntu and even patched in mannasim. the "make file" of ns2 is sucessful as well. The problem arises, whenever i try to run a tcl file.. eg: example1.tcl it gives an error regarding nam. I have installed nam-1.11 and configured it too. It is however unable to open the graphical window. Moreover, no trace files are created, nor any output is found in "nam.out"
Since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04, my Open Office documents take ages to open. Also, the system does not open pdf documents. Both these problems arose immediately after the upgrade. How do I go about sorting these bugs out.

When trying to conigure via nvidia-setting using root (sudo) and then saving to config file I get the ' Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing.' in a message box - below is what i get on terminal:
Code: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit.py", line 75, in <module> operation_status = main(options) File "/usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit.py", line 51, in main
I have been only using the free vmware server thus far for my virtualization I have recently installed Fedora 11 and am currently looking at using the XEN virtualization software. I am currently running and upgrade from F10 to Fedora 11 with the PAE kernel. Also I am using KDE 4 with kmod-nivida drivers. Now here is what I have done
To install Virtualization requirements I did the following: sudo yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'
I then also did: sudo yum install kvm qemu libvirt python-virtinst
I then installed xen: sudo yum install xen*
Now, I read that i needed "kernel-xen" but it doesn't appear to exists a "yum list kernel*' only displays kernel packages and the kernel PAE pakages so I figured I don't need it I then started all the xen services and libvirtd service Opened virt-manager and added a new connection: hupervisor: Xen and connection: local
I get the following error: Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///': <class 'libvirt.libvirtError'> unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused None
I guess my question now is... what is the difference between the hypervisor: QEMU/KVM and XEN. Because I seem to be able to create a VM using this. My VM is an XP vm for work purposes to run some windows only software I would like to use XEN as I just have my mind set on it but I might just be ignorant and on the wrong track is there a how to guide for fedora 11 and xen? the fedora 7 guide i found needs the kernel-xen installed.

As of this morning I cannot open pdf's by clicking on them in firefox. I can download them and open them from the download window or even from the folder they are saved to, but not from the browser. Evince opens and says: Unable to open document Error opening file: No such file or directory.
Evince in non-gnome systems is unable to open external link. The error msg it shows is
Code:
Unable to open external link The specified location is not supported. I have already googled it, however it only says it is a bug, without any solution available. Evince in gnome systems however work just fine. Is there any way evince can use sensible-browser to open external links?
when I click on any folder under places. for example if I click on my home folder or video folder. Or any folder under places. I get a document viewer message in Red. Saying "Unable to open document" "cant open directory" how I can fix this?? im on 11.04
The following message comes up when I boot up: Logging in user Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 0. When I press OK, the system completes the start up and everything looks normal. But when I try to connect to internet, I get the following message:
KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future. If I reboot the system, I logg in successfully. So far the problem has appeared approximately upon every second time I boot up. Rebooting the system seems to take care of it.
Don't know what info is of interest. I'm using
Opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.4.2 (Factory) After upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 it worked fine for a week or so.
I do a clean install of slackware64 13.1 beta1 with KDE and switch default runlevel to 4 in /etc/inittab.
I try to login in kdm, I always come back to the login....
I try this with default runlevel 3 and an .xinitrc with "ck-launch-session startkde" .. works without problems, so I switch back to default runlevel 4, now i can login and only get the error "Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session..."
I installed Open Office 4 on Debian 8 but when I run the program I get this error message.
root@localhost:/home/paul# openoffice4 No protocol specified No protocol specified /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice.bin X11 error: Can't open display: Set DISPLAY environment variable, use -display option or check permissions of your X-Server (See "man X" resp. "man xhost" for details)
Open Office works fine when I run the command "startx" in the Konsole but so far I haven't been able to configure it.
For some odd reason, Gwibber won't open at all. The process is listed as "Sleeping", but every time I try and open the app, nothing happens. I tried re-installing it, and even deleting it via Synaptic and installing, but to no avail.
I'm trying to run a program called Alice 3.0. When I load the program, it crashes at the splash screen. I ran it in terminal, and this is the error message I received:

I have installed moto4lin, as I want to be able to get pictures off my razr v3mM, which I could easily do in Windows. I found a guide for connecting a v3m, but for some reason moto4lin is screwing around with me. Here is my log:

I've just installed ubuntu 10.10 and found it to be great until the next morning... I logged on today to find my top and bottom menu bars have gone! I thought that there may be something wrong with my resolution so I right clicked on the screen and selected 'change desktop background' but nothing would happen, I'm even unable to open a terminal!
I burned a bunch of files months ago on DATA dvds to keep copies just incase my external died, so i wanted to grab a few files, and the CD won't show up.
Some of them work, some dont, all were tested and confirmed to be working when i burned them a while back using Windows 7 and some where made using Vista

I have been unable to open my Downloads folder for 2 days now. I've tried everything. I can get into every other folder on my machine though. I also have 103GB free space on my machine. Is there perhaps a limit on the amount of data I can have per folder? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu.
