Evince in non-gnome systems is unable to open external link. The error msg it shows is

Unable to open external link The specified location is not supported. I have already googled it, however it only says it is a bug, without any solution available. Evince in gnome systems however work just fine. Is there any way evince can use sensible-browser to open external links?
On a fresh installed Lucide machine, I cannot open external hyper links (url) from within evince. I get the following error message:

when I click an external link, it opens a NEW Firefox window, instead of opening a new tab in a ALREADY OPEN Firefox instance, and worst of all, IT STAYS IN THE HOMEPAGE, not going to wherever it was supposed to.this is bad, and it renders useless some software functions, like Gmail Notifier, when I click to go to my account.if I set Chromium as default browser, it works like a charm. I believe this is happening since Natty upgrade. and I'm using Firefox 4.

CentOS 5.2 64bit 2.6.18-92.el5xen. Use rsync with --link-dest for nightly backups, works well. Was recently asked to start weekly backups to an external drive for off-site storage. The regular syncing works but hard linking seems to be ignored. So the backup is long with no space saving advantage. Here is an example of the command being run:

A series of updates were suggested to update by update manager yesterday and I updated them. My computer crashed a few hours later and after rebooting there is this annoying problem with links. Nautilus can no longer open samba shares smb:// nor can it open web site addresses when I click on a link in evolution. I did some digging around and found that gvfs-bin was not installed and it was suggested on the forums that this might be the problem. I installed it but it made no difference. Also when you go to the "connect to server" option under places, the only thing listed as an option is "custom location". Even worse, my external hard disk doesn't automount anymore either.
I am using ubuntu 10.10 x64 bit.
I'm running Debian Wheezy on a laptop with an i3 380M and 4GB of DDR3 1066 RAM. Whenever I open a relatively large (~80MB) pdf in evince, my system will continue running perfectly fine for a few minutes and then at some point it will just completely freeze up. The mouse cursor doesn't even respond, and I have to do a hard reboot to get the system running again.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi've been using xubuntu for a few days now and i am encountering this irritating problem! i am able to connect other thumb drives and other flash drives to my laptop and they run fine on xubuntu but when i try to connect my 80 gigs external hard drive, it displays the following error message and shows nothing but an empty window of the hard drive with no contents of it :
ERROR:
"Failed to open directory "This IS RJ's". Error stating file '/media/This IS RJ's/xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso': Input/output error."
where "this is RJ's" is my hard drives label and the "xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" is a file i believe inside the drive. ( is it causing the problem?) this external hard disk is working fine on windows xp. but what is the problem on xubuntu?
I upgraded to jessie today and I am having problems with my background. When I log in, the background tries to start on the external monitor but then it fails to load. I can change the background in settings but it does not show up. The background just becomes black and I am not sure why.

(Crud being incremental backups, windows software, and similar things.)(I also want to get rid of the FAT32 file system that they use.) These are USB 1TB drives. The theory is that data is written to it once, but read back a number of times. (I also burn that data to DVD. If there was software that could organize 5TB of data on DVDs, I'd be using them.)
I"m trying to decide whether to use ReiserFS, Ext4, or another file system. Basically, I want something that:
* Won't get corrupted when the power fails;
* Can handle files that are 4+GB in size;
* Uses extends --- preferably without user intervention;
For some reason, Evince has the open file keyboard shortcut set to "A", which means that if I'm searching for text in a pdf and I type the "a" key, the "Open Document" dialog box is called. How can I fix this?

I know I could manually choose /usr/bin/evince or something, but isn't there a way to make Firefox simply see what my desktop settings are, or at least offer me the choices?

When I connect my logitech cordless optical mouse to my laptop I am unable to access it's settings under system settings. The setting options are greyed out and it says

How or where can I set the permissions so that I am able to access the mouse settings? I've googled around and found lots of references to the above message but no solutions.

I have an apache server running on my ubuntu machine. I can view them using my local ip (192.168.1.6):80/. And my friends can view the things hosted on my server using my external ip (example http://123.123.123.123:80) but when a friend links back to me to show me what they are looking at and share the moment, I can't view the link, it simply redirects to my router login page.
I had an older linksys router and this could work fine. I could click on the links with my external IP and it routes back to my server for viewing.
Remember to note that I am on the machine that has the server, and I'd like to be redirected out and back to it so we can share pictures back and fourth without me having to replace the external IP address with my local one just to view that link in the browser.
I have an external monitor connected to my laptop (extended display). I always drag the Totem player from the laptop screen to external monitor to watch video files. I wonder, if the Totem player can be set to open in the external monitor automatically, everytime I open it?

As of this morning I cannot open pdf's by clicking on them in firefox. I can download them and open them from the download window or even from the folder they are saved to, but not from the browser. Evince opens and says: Unable to open document Error opening file: No such file or directory.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMost of my gnome system administration tools are (suddenly) failing to open. The system is a new installation with both KDE and gnome, and the gnome system admin tools were working fine, but now they fail silently (nothing even in .xsession-errors). For instance, if I select Synaptic Package manager from the menu, I will get the gksu prompt to enter my administrative password, which I do. Then a notification will appear in the Taskbar "Granting Rights" and then after that nothing happens, it just fails silently. Note that this also happens if I enter 'gksu synaptic' or 'gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic' at the alt-F2 command line. Note that it doesn't seem to matter whether I check "Save Password for Session" or not. The same happens for time-admin, users-admin, etc. I have tried reinstalling gnome-system-tools, system-tools-backends, and gnome-keyring with no effect. I have googled extensively and have found a few other people with this same problem, but no solutions. Note also that kdesu does still work fine, and there doesn't seem to be any such problems in KDE in general. Only in gnome and with gksu.
P.S. Let me know if you need any more info (output from commands, files, etc).
I want to have ~/Documents ~/Music ~/Pictures ~/Videos point to directories with the same names, but at a different (external hard drive) location.I've been playing around with different commands, but not getting the desired result.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting Thunderbird to open links using Chromium (chromium-browser).
The default browser is now set to chromium-browser in KDE system settings. I've also tweaked the Thunderbird config network.protocol-handler.app.http and https settings to use chromium-browser or /usr/bin/chromium-browser.
Despite this, Thunderbird keeps opening links in Firefox. I'm bewildered as to why.
One thought is possibly an old GNOME system setting (there are .gconf and .gnome2 directories in my home directory, though I no longer use GNOME or have it installed on my system). But I don't know and I would have thought the Thunderbird config would have overridden that in any case.
I got 11.04 installed on my laptop a few weeks ago and all seemed well. I've only used this machine for general surfing and downloads (legal of course )Anyway, last night it started to display some odd or should I say, show stopping issues.
Issue 1. Clicking the Home Folder button at the top of the left launcher does nothing. Well when I say nothing is does dim the icon, the hard drive turns but no folder opens. OS function 101 failure.
Issue 2. Inserting a USB stick (that just last week we working fine) does nothing. Again, when I say nothing, the harddrive light goes on, but the USB drive does not open.
Issue 3. Unable to get my home folder open in the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity system I downloaded Sunflower, a file browser app. It runs fine from the command line, but when the I decided to make a shortcut to this on the desktop, I right clicked on the desktop in order to use the Create Launcher option. But guess what? The right click does not reveal any menu. Right clicking on the desktop does nothing.
This is not good enough for what is suppose to be a mature stable OS!I really do not want to go to Fedora 15 or <shudder> Windows 7 so, how do I fix this broken system? Is there some system repair that reinstalls the OS or something? Is there a system repair that does not require me getting all the updates again?
Whenever I click a website link to a .pdf I get this error message, "Could not launch Adobe Reader 8.1.2. Please make sure it exists in PATH variable in the environment. If the problem persists, please reinstall the application." Even though there is no Adobe Reader installed on my p.c.
I then have to right click the link and "Save link as How do I set the PATH variable so that Evince can open the document directly without first having to save the link?
I installed firefox 3.6 from the firefox-stable ppa repository and I noticed that the location bar autocomplete stops working after opening an external link (e.g. clicking a link in evolution or empathy). The problem still occurs when starting firefox in safemode, so it doesn't appear to be related to a misbehaving extension. The problem is only fixed with a browser restart or when I open and then close 'show all history'.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen checking emails, many will be notifications from forum threads or other internet links. I have noticed it is very inconsistent in the way it opens them. Sometimes the browser will stay in the background so I can keep reading the emails and keep clicking on the links for reading in the browser afterwards. Other times the browser will jump to the front with every link so I have to keep switching back to Evo.
And other times it's a mix of both, seems completely random.
I have my Ubuntu 9.10 server setup with apache2 and it will load web pages. The cgi-bin perl programs do run in the web server. What I would like to know is how to have it access video files and download then from a link. The video files are at /media/usb-drive/Movies/movies

I have check all my settings and they seem to be fine. Firefox is default browser, clicking a link should open a new tab in Firefox
but id does not work.
What happens is that when I click a link it starts/opens Firefox but with empty address bar.
I need to manually copy link location and paste it manually in Firefox.
What to do to fix it?
