I 10.04 32bit server edition on a box I had lying around, set it up for samba+upnp, and everything was going great.
When rebooting, the server now turns the monitor off, and I'm not sure if anything's loading. I see the initial dell splash screen, and hear the hard drive start to run, and then the monitor goes into standby.
But when i try the Ubuntu Server Edition, using the same method of burning the iso file i downloaded from ubuntu homepage into a cd, and when i reboot my pc and the screen display the following:ISOLINUX 3.63 Debian 2008-07-15 Copyright (c) 1944-2008 H. Peter Anvin
Loading...Initializing gfx codeand it hang there.Do anyone know what happened? I have verified the file i download and the disc i burnt through MD5SUM.

I tried installing Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Server Edition 64 bit on one of my drives today...
The install completed fine until it went to reboot. Then it faills while initializing the graphics. It tries (a purple flash on the screen) then goes to a text based dump on the monitor.
Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Desktop Edition run great on this machine. I'm wondering if the Server Edition confused by multiple instances of a video card? This computer is SLI bridged:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a good grasp on windows server 2003 but I don?t want to pay outrageous license fees for software and services and clients. I am newish to terminal as I only know a few commands. I have no problem installing services for the server edition for 10.04. Its just understanding whats going wrong to troubleshoot. I guess there is you guys and I have good working knowledge of Cisco's IOS's so I understand things like routing tables and interfaces and such for troubleshooting.
Questions I have... Can I install the desktop version of 10.04 and just install the server services? I was looking at the server guide [URL] and would like to know if these can all be installed on the desktop edition without too much trouble. I would imagine one could just use the server edition but I would really want a graphical user environment for some of the activities, if not all that I can. This would be becuase on my skills in the CLI. I priced out a server from Dell. I fits my budget perfectly if I go the Ubuntu 10.04 route. I was wondering if anyone sees any conflicts with the hardware for the Ubuntu OS....

i downloaded Vmware Workstation 7 onto my Windows XP PC and i have tested the os on a HP laptop so the OS is fine, well back to the point i load it up and VMware has a error saying it can not find "C:/Documents/allusers/applicationdata/" something like that ill add a picture so you will see.

I am trying to install Ubuntu server edition on an old HP XT963 that recently came into my possession. I mainly just wanted to use it as a home file server and print server. I have been running ubuntu desktop on my laptop for a little under a year, but this is my first go at the server edition.

I would like to provide more information such as ifconfig and any other commands but I'm not exactly sure how I would do that without being able to copy/paste. I guess I would have the command dump the output to a file, but I'm not familiar with the -options this being my first time CLI-only.
I recently installed Unbuntu Netbook edition on well my Netbook and it works all fine but I notice when I turn on my Netbook it will hang on a black screen where I cant manipulate anything except hit return a few times. It finally loads after a minute or two and Ubuntu works fine afterwords.
Is this normal? I am pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general.
I've set up a ubuntu server 8.04 with ntp-server. At boot time the ntp service is started, butCode:ntpq -pdelivers:No association ID's returned.I've set up the ntp the way to be able above my private network to use this as reference.If i restart ntp everything is fine.First i thought that the problem is that dhcp is started after ntp, but after changing the start-order in the runlevels this enigma remains.

After that I installed the minimal xfce system with the guide at [URL] . I've tried every trick I could find on to disable it from starting up, but it appears every time! Wierdly enough, it doesnt display any standard looking login screen, but instead displays this old looking login screen with a debian logo. Not sure how to get a screen shot of it. All I want is it to boot into a command line!
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a truly freakish thing happening here. First I'll start with a general map:
Workstation A (10.10.0.100) - Ubuntu 10.10 joined to mydomain.local via likewise-open
Workstation B (10.10.0.101) - Ubuntu 10.10 joined to mydomain.local via likewise-open
Workstation C (10.10.0.102) - Ubuntu 10.10 NOT joined to any domain
Server A (10.10.0.1) - Windows 2003 AD Server on mydomain.local
Server B (10.20.0.1) - Ubuntu 10.10 joined to otherdomain.remote
As you can see I've successfully installed likewise and I've been able to get SUCCESS notifications from the join. I've been able to log in locally with a domain user and use a domain user password. I've also added a special Group in AD for linuxadmins and then added that to my /etc/sudoers file so I can sudo from a Domain Account. Great right? I'm slowly replacing Windows. But there's a hitch:
I can't SSH from machine to machine! but it's still not quite that simple.
I can SSH from Workstation A to Workstation C as a Domain User.
I can SSH(Putty) from Server A to Workstation A and B as a Domain User.
I can SSH from Server B to Workstation C as an alternate Domain User.
I can't SSH from Workstation A to Workstation B as a Domain User.
I can SSH from Workstation A to Workstation B as a Local User.
I can SSH from Workstation B to Workstation A as a Local User.
I can't SSH from Workstation B to Workstation A as a Domain User.
Complicated enough for you? The simple version is that if it's joined to the domain I can't ssh into another machine that's also joined to the domain while I'm a domain user. But give me a local account and it's as if there's not problem. I tried looking through the logs to find something but wasn't about to find a "sshd" type log. Syslog was completely unhelpful as it doesn't really show anything for the time stamps of my connections. Where does one start troubleshooting this?
I thought it might be a groups thing like the sudoers file, but I don't have an ssh or sshd group. Oh and what does SSH do? What's the error it throws?

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 on a home PC as a local-only file and web server for some private projects.After a few minutes Ubuntu will stop responding to the network and a cold reboot is required to re-enable the NIC.I've been able to stop the above occurring with a user logged in and constantly pinging the gateway, although this is obviously undesirable.
I read here and elsewhere that a fix is to set acpi=off in grub. I have done this but now instead Ubuntu will not boot and shows the message:

The system will boot fine if I revert the changes but obviously the sleep problem remains.The BIOS does not have an option to disable ACPI, just select S1 or S3.Is there anything else I should be looking for in order to disable sleep? I am using Exceed (the hummingbird) as an X emulator on my PC, I have X11 forwarding turned on in putty, and I have the DISPLAY environment variable set to the PC IP address + , like so DISPLAY=192.168.100.11:0. When I type startx, however, the Xsession starts at the console. How can I get it to come up on the PC?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried booting up natty server on both a unetbootem usb flash drive install and on CD. I get the menu of options to install like Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Server 9 expert install, Cloud, etc. Hitting install either the 1st or 2nd option leads to a black screen but not at a frozen state(I can still reboot with ctrl-alt-del). The server Im installing on is a ibm system-x rack with a single xeon and a raid5 already setup to be used for installation. Now Im back to using lucid 10.04.2 which I might consider upgrading through Update Manager since I cant get natty to boot correctly with a working display. Anyone having similar problems on Natty server stable release?Also as I post this, I dont see a ubuntu server prefix, maybe it should be added?

I am currently working on a Diskless Fedora10 based PXE image that should auto login and then launch the ICA client without launching the desktop (so normal autostart will not cut it)I have got the image up and running, the clients boot correctly, autologin etc, but still launch KDE, and I was hoping replace the desktop with the ICA Client.

I have got Apache2 and the LAMP stack installed okay, along with phpMyAdmin and can give my external IP to anyone with the http:// and anyone can view my website that way but what I want to do is have my IP resolve into a domain name like ooloo-website.net but I don't know how to do this.
Is there any way that I can do this like register my IP to a free DNS and domain website without buying a domain or using one of those free ones like ooloo.webhost.net or do I need to host everything myself like DNS and the domain? Can I even do all of this myself?
I have 64-bit ubuntu 9.10 server edition running in a media server for my house. But over the last few months I've discovered that its loosing files! Its not all files, Just music. It will lose anywhere from about half an album the every song in the folder, leaving the artwork if it was in there. At first i thought It was iTunes reorganizing my files, but thats not the case, as i've looked around for them, and told iTunes pretty much to stop messing with my file locations. My boss who's pretty Linux savvy says that 9.10 is really buggy. I've tried doing updates (sudo apt-get update/upgrade) but its still losing music.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've tried to set up a Hadoop cluster on a few freshly-installed 10.04 Server Edition machines and hit a problem. (I was able to set up the cluster using Desktop edition previously). The issue is that I can't connect to the service even though the Java process is running and listening on the port and there is no error in the logs. Anyway, I started to wonder if it was firewall issue so I googled it and found conflicting information.

All the howto's I've read so far tell you how to set up certain things, but I don't know what I actually need to set up.Rather than asking the same questions all over again on a forum like this, and generally being a bit of a noob, I wonder if there's a resource somewhere that someone could direct me to in order to know what I need to do to set up a fileserver.

I am upgrading my linux server to Mandriva MES 5 server. Although its working fine (I can copy/delete/execute files from/to linux server), at mac workstation, at chooser, when I click on appletalk icon nothing happens. I have to click on Server IP address button and type my server IP, which is 192.168.0.123. Its is annoying and time consuming. I have to do this every time I want to access my server. At previously version, after I click on appletalk icon (at chooser), the server name comes up right away.
