Dec 4, 2010I'm installing 10.10 on a Dell laptop it appears the installation has stalled while retrieving file 26 or 64. It's been on this file for about an hour now.

Oct 19, 2010I've been running various releases of Suse Linux on my home PC for about 6 years (currently running Suse 11.2). The old hard disk in that machine is starting to experience read errors, so I bought a new disk to put into the PC which otherwise works fine.
So I figure now is a good time to give Ubuntu a try. I plan to install the KDE version of ubuntu on the new drive, but once that's finished I will want to mount the old disk and copy as much as I can off of it onto the new disk (JPEGs, old documents, stuff under my home directory.
The old disk uses Reiser. I have read various threads concerning problems with mounting Reiser FS disks under ubuntu, but many of them are old so it's not clear to me what the current status of support for Reiser in ubuntu is.
I am planning to do the following:
1) Remove the old disk from the PC, put the new disk in its place.
2) Install kubuntu on the new disk.
3) Put the old disk back into the machine along with the new one with the old one being the slave/secondary disk so that when I power up the machine, it will be running ubuntu off of the new disk.
At this point I will want to mount the old disk so I can then start copying files off of it.
What do I need to do to mount the old disk, keeping in mind it uses the Reiser file system?

Jun 24, 2010So I had a problem with my ubuntu 10.04 on wubi. so i saved the root.disk and uninstalled it then reinstalled unbuntu 10.04 as another partition. I did the mount thing with the root.disk and now and trying to move files over. I need permission for that and its asking me for a sudo password and i didnt set one. i tried using sudo bash and its also not working.

General :: Retrieving Files From Damaged LVM Disk On CentOS 5.5?
Nov 3, 2010I'm running CentOS 5.5.
A couple of weeks ago, my 500 GB disk crashed after suffering an accelerating error rate for a couple of days.
Now that I have a new disk in place, I want to mount my old disk, which is (was) an LVM disk, as a second disk and recover files from it if possible.
The question is, how do I go about this?
If I mount the old disk:
# mount /dev/sdb1 /sdb1
the top-level directory shows only two subdirectories:
lost+found, which is empty; restored, which is an image of files recovered from old disk's predecessor.
'df' shows (or appears to show) that the disk is 11% full. Sorry, I don't recall how full the disk was before it crashed.
How do I get the system to recognize the LVM structure on the old disk & mount it?
Or is the directory structure too corrupted? Do I need to send the disk out to a recovery service?
P.S. Have aleady done some poking around with lvmdiskscan, which shows the old disk whether it's mounted or not, and vgchange -ay, which doesn't appear to do anything.
CentOS 5 :: Copying Files Stalls For No Reason?
Apr 29, 2010I am using Centos 5.3, and when I try to copy a batch of files, it just slows down and stops, the files are not that big, few megs. first I realized it when I used secure ftp, I thought maybe my internet is slow, but now it does even from an external USB drive,.
I use Krusader for copying.

Burned the image and restarted my laptop for installation.
Well I get the Ubuntu logo with the little points down and looks like loading but it stalls and does nothing after some time.
Don't know what to do I'm on Fedora now but I want ubuntu.
Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Stalls During Partitioning Step
Mar 6, 2010I have tried installing Ubuntu 9.10, 64 and also 32 bit versions, neither works. During the install, I get to the step where the installer wants to bring up and show the partitions but the partitions never appear. If I quit, I am show the Ubuntu live screen where if I bring up Gparted and choose to install on the unused partition (second half of a data drive), the install proceeds but stalls at about 15% partitioning of that space.
I have installed Ubuntu many times before, have used gparted live to resize and create partitions in the past, something seems really amiss this time. And all I can think of is that I now have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (quad core AMD processor, 64 bit, 8GB ram; two hard drives, Win7 on the first drive, second drive is data on a partition and an empty unused partition to which I unsuccessfully try to install Ubuntu 9.10.
Is it just Win 7 messing this up? If it is Win7, that is very very disturbing.
I was not even able to get Wubi to work-- in installed, but then when I rebooted and chose to boot into Wubi I got an endless jam up of errors windows on the screen saying there was no "/" root partition.
Ubuntu Installation :: Mythbuntu Install Stalls Out At 85-90%?
Feb 26, 2011Total noob here. I am trying to install Mythbuntu 10.10 on a computer with and empty hard drive using a CD.The install start fine, I make a couple of selections to tell the installer I want to use the entire harddrive, select the timezone and the install starts without any problems. Unfortunatly after about 30min or so, the installation seem to be stalled out with the progress bar at the 85-90% range. There are no obvious errors in the log.
I have successing installed Ubuntu in the past (although not on this hardware). The PC includes an IDE based DVD-R, 120Gb sata based ssd, 939 dual core processor. 8600GT video card. 2Gb memory. One possibility is that I don't have a TV tuner card installed yet. Was going to do that after I got Ubuntu up and running but perhaps the installer is looking for a tuner card. I realize I am not giving anyone much to work but I am not sure what I could post.
General :: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Installation Stalls?
May 1, 2010I've downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 from the UK mirror of the Ubuntu site. When I try to install the OS from the CD it stalls at various different places. I have been able to get it to a max of 25% of installation before stalling, but more often than not it stalls when I'm trying to choose the keyboard type, or when I'm trying to setup my username / PC hostname.
I've carried out an md5sum on the iso and it shows no errors. I've downloaded the iso a second time and carried out the same check, and similarly no errors.

Feb 11, 2010I had Lenny installed on my Acer Aspire laptop however I've had to try to reinstall it.The installation stops at 'Retrieving file 811 of 811' from the ftp server and thats it.I've tried a few times with the same result and I have done many installs without any issue except for this time.

Mar 16, 2011Using UNetBootin on Windows, I flashed a USB keydrive with the Ubuntu 10.04 Minimal CD and proceeded to boot up a brand new PC.
Problem is, after choosing Install, language/keyboard, and then a repository from which to download files, the installer just stops there. I tried two different repositories, to no avail. The network hardware is correctly detected and set through DHCP.
Has someone seen this? Should I use an other option?

Aug 28, 2010I am trying to install the PPC kernel on an iBook G3. The CDs boot up, however both the net-install and the regular install cd both freeze up after it looks for harddisks. The screen is blue. The box title says

I have no clue what to do. I am trying to get an error readout, but nothing but the power button works. It shuts it off. I check the system clock and it was wrong, but I got it set to the correct time. I don't have and OSX disks. I am wanting a full Linux HD. Please let me know how to trouble shoot. (I have seen that many people have no problem installing this on there macs. The os is still working on the os side, but I want to switch it to Linux.)
Fedora Installation :: F13 Live CD Stalls At Copying Imade To HD?
Nov 9, 2010I am doing a clean install of Fedora 13 XFCE4 spin from the live CD. Live CD boots and functions normally. Installation from Live CD works as advertised up to point where the installer starts to copy the disk image to the HD. Progress bar initially moved fairly rapidly then stopped and installations stalls.
I've tried the installation three times with the same result. I've seen other posts referring to problems with SELinux, but this should not be a factor here as the install is clean.
Debian Installation :: Reinstall Stalls At Installer Boot Menu
Jan 18, 2015I'm trying to reinstall Debian on one of my machines after an unsuccessful install of FreeBSD (it didn't jive with my ssd). Debian installations have never been a problem before on this particular setup before but now for some reason it won't get past the "Debian GNU/linux installer boot menu". The USB goes into idle mode and the menu does not respond to keyboard strokes. I've tried several debian images to no avail. Ubuntu seems to work just fine though but I don't want to install Ubuntu just because Debians having some problems. I booted ubuntu live and reformated the SSD I had tried to install FreeBSD on because there were no partition tables on it but that didn't work either. I'd like some expert input before I go do another `dd`.

May 23, 2011I have just installed Squeeze on my laptap with a radeon mobility equipped laptop. When it boots, I see the following message:r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV635_pfp.bin".and some others, too, but it stalls at that point, and I cannot use CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a text-based prompt - in fact, I can only seem to get it back with a ALT-SYSRQ (R-E-I-S-V-B) sequence to force a reboot. It is a multi-boot system, with a windows partition, Ubuntu partition, and the new Debian partition. The Ubuntu and Windows partitions will still boot, only the Debian stalls.
When I boot into Ubuntu, I can see the Debian partition, and can see (for instance) the /var/boot/dmesg file, but it only says:"(Nothing has been logged yet.)"So, being new to debian itself (even though, I know, that Ubuntu has a debian base), how can I make it boot without X, which is I presume, the center of the difficulty? Can I change some file on the debian partition using Ubuntu to get the debian partition to boot in text only mode, and then try to fix the radeon driver?
Alternatively, can I put the proper files for the radeon driver *from* the Ubuntu partition *to* the debian partition and expect it to load and boot correctly? I did, at one point, download and install the proprietary ATI driver files on Ubuntu, so can I put them in a proper place on the debian install?
Fedora Installation :: CD/DVD Boot On Intel Core 2 Duo VPro Stalls?
Jun 13, 2009I've been using Linux (Fedora) since 2005 (when I happily abandoned Windows) and loved every minute of it. No installation or other unresolvable problems. But now, I am totally stuck. A month ago, they just gave me a new desktop in the office: Dell Optiplex 960 with the Intel Core 2 Duo vPro chip. So I waited for Fedora 11 to come out, burned the x86-64 Install Media on a DVD, repartitioned the hard drive like I always do on new Windoze machines, and began installing. The install process gets to this announcement and stops:
mounting /tmp as tmpfs... done Then, after a 5-minute wait, if I push the power button on the computer for a hard reboot, then it says:
running install running /sbin/loader and then stalls for good. Then all I can do is hard-reboot again.
So, out of curiosity (and for other reasons), I tried booting the machine from other linux disks: Knoppix, and SystemRescue (www.sysresccd.org). They all stall at different points. The funny thing is that both Fedora 11 x86-64 and SystemRescue happily boot on my personal one-year-old Lenovo T61 Intel Centrino Duo VPro laptop.
I get a feeling that somehow the Intel Core 2 Duo vPro is causing the problem. I also think that there is got to be someone else out there who either had this problem, or was able to install F11 on similar Dell box. Google search did not produce actionalbe answers for me.
Debian :: Dual Boot Installation Stalls - Timer Not Connected
Jan 25, 2010I am new to linux and I am attempting to establish a dual boot with Windows Vista 32 Bit and Linux Debian 503 i386-netinst. When I place the install cd into the cd drive and boot from the cd a problem occurs at "Booting the kernel."
A message appears:
[0.116007] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8524 timer not connected to IO-APIC
Then the installation just "stalls" and never moves past this point.
Fedora Installation :: F15 Network Install Stuck On "retrieving Installation Information"?
May 29, 2011i'm doing a fresh network install of f15 from a usb stick. the installation has now been stuck on the "retrieving installation information for fedora 15 - i386" stage for over an hour. on previous releases this stage has only taken a few mins. i can see from my router that there have been thousands of packets sent and received from the laptop. i've searched all the normal places but can't find anyone else reporting this. does anyone know if this is a known bug (and if there is a fix) or if this stage takes significantly longer in f15 to any previous release ? cheers.

Retrieving the key in Ubuntu
The easiest way to generate a new OpenPGP key in Ubuntu is to use the Passwords and Encryption Keys tool. If you are using Ubuntu 10.04 or an earlier version, it is located at Applications > Accessories > Passwords and Encryption Keys. In Ubuntu 10.10 and later versions, it is located at System > Preferences > Passwords and Encryption Keys.
Step 1 Open Passwords and Encryption Keys.
Step 2 Select the My Personal Keys tab, select your key and open the property window by pressing Space Bar or double clicking with your pointer. Select the Details tab of the property window.
Step 3 Select the Fingerprint text (the ten blocks of numbers and letter). Copy the text by pressing the Ctrl+c keys together.
Retrieving the key using the GPG command

so i followed these instructions, and there was nothing in my "personal keys", same for the command. so my question is how do i get the fingerprint to be able to register my key in launchpad?

Jul 16, 2011I've got a laptop here where the Windows product key has been torn from the bottom. Windows will not boot up on this laptop (it blue screens). When I remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into my working Windows computer, the partition shows up as "raw". However, the partition mounts under Ubuntu just fine, so I'm wondering if there are any Linux tools that will allow me to retrieve the Windows 7 product key, from within Linux...

Sep 2, 2010I have several Gmail accounts. On one of my Ubuntu-running computers (Hardy) Evolution remembers the passwords. Which is a good thing, as I can't remember one of the passwords.
When I'm out and about with my netbook, I like to check my email. But I don't use Evolution on the netbook; I access the Gmail accounts via the web. And because I can't remember the password for one account, I can't check it.
Obviously, on my Hardy desktop, Evolution/Ubuntu remembers the password - so it must be stored on the computer, right? How do I get Ubuntu to tell me the password?
Ubuntu :: GUI Stalls When Sound Is Out?
Jul 21, 2010At times sound does not work and opening Sound Preferences produces only "Waiting for sound system to respond". Any time a sound would play in Firefox or Thunderbird it instead stalls the application window (or all windows) from responding for about 5 seconds.
Sometimes closing all applications and restarting clears up the sound problem and the stalling. But it usually comes back after shutting down with some applications left open. I do not restore saved applications at sign-in.
Fedora :: Retrieving File From RPM?

$ strace -o /usr/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d user
Of course this truncated the dovecot-lda file I was trying to trace down to a size of zero.
Is there a standard way to get this back from the RPM ?
That package has some configuration files I don't want copied over with the original RPM versions.
I am hoping for some nice option to rpm that will retrieve lost files like that and get the permissions and ownerships set right as opposed to brute force rpm2cpio and then manually copy the file into place and then try to figure out correct ownership and perms.

Dec 12, 2010I am trying to install ubuntu studio 10.10 it starts to go through the setup steps but after it scans the cd I get the message "Retrieving apt-mirror-setup" and it stays ay 0%.
I have tried both with internet and without and I get the same problem. It is a brand new disc with no os ever installed on it. Is the a way to force the installer to skip the mirror check?
