Ubuntu Installation :: Apt-get Will Not Install Wine W/o "upgrading" Libc6?

Feb 4, 2010

I am trying to install wine on a Karmic box, but apt-get is trying to upgrade libc6 at the same time. _I know better than to touch the runtime C library. When I boot the same computer with a live session of Karmic, apt-get installs wine flawlessly.What is going on here? _Why is apt-get trying to do this

root@machine:~# apt-get install wine

Debian :: Updating Libc6 W/o Upgrading?

May 17, 2010

I run Etch. Yes, it's oldstable, but Lenny and Squeeze annoy the heck out of me. However, I'm trying to install the latest version (5.1) of Google Earth, but it requires >=glibc-2.4. Etch only offers 2.3.something. The earlier version of GE I have (4.3) does work, but is apparently no longer supported by Google as it fails to connect every time I fire it up. I found Lenny does have the required libc6 version. Can I update the libc6 packages by installing them directly (separately downloaded packages) or do I get the dependency hell that I want to avoid?

Ubuntu Installation :: Package Installer Closes When Trying To Install Libc6?

Jul 22, 2010

I have a laptop which has Xubuntu on a Wubi install. I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install Fail On Toshiba Equium A100 (libc6-dev Problem)

Apr 23, 2011

Clean install.
Appeared to work fine.
Restart after install OK.
Ran Update Manager:

It started work on some 300-odd updates, But froze when "Applying Changes" to the following package:

libc6-dev. It was "Preparing to configure" libc6-dev, But couldn't get any further. The Update Manager window said it was at this point: "Security Updates - User-space parcer utility for AppArmor" Total freeze-up.

Forced restart.
Got to password screen OK.
Then to blank screen:

[code].....

This is all most unfortunate. The computer belongs to someone I know. They were getting fed up with their other operating system. I suggested Ubuntu. I've got their laptop on a promise to set them up with Ubuntu. I don't have long. They need it quickly. I may have no choice but to give it back to them with their old operating system on it. Won't be any skin off their nose.

Ubuntu :: Can't Install - Downgrading Packet (libc6)

Feb 17, 2010

I installed wrong version from this package (I didn't knew that libc6 was very important package) so now i get a lot of errors. I tracked the original version and downloaded it. I have it on my PC as .deb package but i can't install it because it's older version then the installed one. Normally, I would first remove the old package and then install new. But now I'm not sure because I don't know will my edubuntu work without the libc6 package. Version of my edbuntu is 7.04 installed on asus eee 900HA. I only have internet on my desktop PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 To 11.04 - Upgrades Hangs At Configuring Libc6

May 18, 2011

I can not perform the upgrade. Installing upgrades hangs at configuring libc6 xscreensaver and xlockmore must be restarted before upgrading One or more running instances of xscreensaver or xscreensaver have been detected on this system. Because of incompatible library changes, the upgrade of the GNU libc library will leave you unable to authenticate to these programs. You should arrange for these programs to be restarted or stopped before continuing this upgrade, to avoid locking your users out of their current sessions. I've stopped xscreensaver it is the only session running. I will reboot and stop xscreensaver and then run the upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To RAID 1 Without A New Install?

Feb 21, 2010

I already have a 300 GB SATA drive with Ubuntu 8.04 installed on it. It is currently running off my mobo's onboard SATA 1.0 Raid Controller. I recently purchased a SATA 2.0 Raid PCI controller that I will be putting in the computer and 2 new 750 GB Western Digital Caviar Green Hard drives. I wish to add the two drives in a Raid 1 configuration to store all my Pictures, Files, and Movies on. Every instruction and tutorial I can find on setting up Raid on Linux assumes you are performing a fresh install on Linux and gives no tips or instructions for current installations. I already have Ubuntu installed and do not wish to have to reinstall it. I want to leave my installation on the 300 GB drive and just add in the 2 750GB drives for storage.

Ubuntu Installation :: Need A Clean Install For Upgrading To 10.4

I'm a relatively new user of Linux, I use Kubuntu 9.10, and I would like to know whether I need to make a clean install for upgrading to 10.4 (I know, stable isn't ready yet, but I'm impatient , and I want to prepare in advance) or I could do it in some way without losing everything I have installed? Or maybe it would be better to only upgrade to the newest version of KDE (I'm using 4.3.2 now)? Which one is easier and/or better? How is it done (Note: using KDE)?

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done.The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

Installation :: Wget Install / Upgrading Main Distro Files

Jul 10, 2010

Recently I did a wget for DreamLinux 4beta6.3, which I now cannot burn to a disk. Another issue with linux in general being just a hobby. Why could a dev not set it up where you could just wget the upgrades for the main distro files themselves ?? We already do this when upgrading the apps, so why not the distro? Why could you not start at alpha, and just slap do a rolling upgrade into rc and beyond?

I understand the potential stability issues, but why can't we ghost the drive and hence have a backup on hand and then do this as outlined, and hence do a single install from alpha the distro's grave? I am wasting four months on "Setting Up" each install, only to wind up reinstalling again. This happens in every variation I have come across. Even in stable versions, the rolling upgrade just craps the install, and the major do overs hijacks all my data.
