Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Start X After Running Update - 9.1
May 16, 2010
I recently (yesterday) did a clean install of 9.1 (karmic koala) on my system. After having struggled with various video driver issues with my 7800GT and getting the proprietary nvidia drivers installed, everything seemed to be working fine. Today I ran some updates and now when the system boots, it crashes down to a text login prompt.
when I try to run startx from the command prompt, I get:
Code:
FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the Nvidia kernel module. Please check your
(EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0)

I have ubuntu 9.10, and installed the latest lampp with default options. Apache/Mysql/Proftpd would start and stop fine. I then did:
...which I got from here...[url] Although I'm pretty sure I was never prompted for the mySQL password. At any rate, now mySQL will not start (Apache and ProFTP are OK). Where can I start debugging this? Where is the conf file for mySQL?

Since installing the 10.04 update on my kubuntu 9.10 x64 system I can no longer log out, kdm doesn't restart. It just ends up with a black screen. Also when I unmute the sound and mouse over anything that has a thumbnail icon in dolphin the speakers pop. This includes pictures and movies. Then also when I leave my computer idle for a long amount of time, it wont wake up, just black screen. I have the newest ati drivers installed from ati website.

While running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.
The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.

I have just installed debian-live-8.3.0-i386-lxde on my old hp530 32-bit laptop
Everything went well but every time I start my laptop I get following message which lasts for approx 1m 20s ...
Code: Select allLoading, please wait...
fsck from util-linux 2.25.2
fsck error 2 (No such file or directory) while executing fsck.ext4 for /dev/sda1
fsck exited with status code 8

with the 3 asterisks above moving back and forth.
... then it boots OK into operating system. so apart from the delay everything is working ok.

I was running the Update Manager when my system froze due to the failure of Karmic to support motherboards using the Intel 845 chipset.
Although the update did not complete when I rebooted and invoked Update Manager it reported that the system was up to date. How do I reset the system so that I can install the updates?

I'm a little bit stuck and in need of advice from people who know what they're talking about. I've had Ubuntu on my office PC, home PC and laptop for about a year now and never had a problem that I couldn't solve, until now. I'd not turned my laptop (Lenovo N 500 with Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit using GRUB2) on for about a month so when I did on Monday of this week I noticed that I'd not updated Ubuntu for 27 days, so ran the update manager. After everything was updated I carried on using it as normal but when I tried to turn it on yesterday I get the following issue...
GRUB loads and gives me all the possible boot options. Whatever one I choose, I get the same results. It starts to boot (I see the black screen with the white Ubuntu logo) but this remains on the screen for a very long time, then it goes to a flashing cursor at the top left of the screen and it just sits there indefinitely.
I've tried playing with Super GRUB Disc but admittedly I'm not too sure what I'm doing with it. I've tried using the Ubuntu Installation disc as a Live CD too but with no joy. The main HDD appears fine when in Live CD mode, all my files are there etc.. Is this actually a GRUB issue or something else? It's like GRUB's doing its bit and then it's failing slightly further down the line.
I'm totally out of my depth here and really don't want to have to reinstall everything, I'm sure there's a simply solution.

I have duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 910. I've just downloaded and installed the latest update for Ubuntu 9.10. After my latest update, Windows will no longer start. When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

I think I have encountered a problem in the way that lucid handles proxy servers. I was having problems running apt-get update due to a firewall at my work. I also noted that I was getting 403 Forbidden for wget. So I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy from my account (which has administrator privileges) and input the http address for the proxy server, and then clicked the button to "Apply Systemwide...".
Following that change, wget worked from my account, but whenever I tried to sudo apt-get update, I got the 403 forbidden response again, even though I could wget the same files that apt-get reported as forbidden. I figured that this was a problem with the root account, and so I typed
Code:
However, upon exiting from the root account, and trying to run sudo apt-get update again, I got the 403 forbidden code again!
So, it seems that the proxy settings are not being applied systemwide.

I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

I'm trying to compile and install new kernel 2.6.32.14 in my ubuntu karmic. After compiling source and executing the deb package for the kernel, I tried to run update-initramfs but got "No space on device" error. My /boot partition size is 100 MB and is currently having 37MB free. After I run the update-initramfs command I noticed that space in /boot got depleted and soon came to naught which led to no space error thrown by gzip. I believe the resultant gzipped archive is no more than 20MB...then why is the whole 37MB is being used up? Please correct me If I'm wrong here otherwise I might be left with no choice but to increase the size of /boot partition. Is there anyway I can make update-initramfs to use the temporary space from other drives(may be /tmp) when creating gzipped archive?

I'm afraid I'm having quite a bit of problems with getting some processes to run at start-up. There are two problems I'm having - the first is that my wireless won't work at startup until I go into terminal and use 'sudo modprobe b43', and the second is that I want to automatically mount a hard-drive partition. So far, I've tried two approaches.
The first is to create a shell file, wifi-fix.sh, containing the following text:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
modprobe b43
mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda7 /media/Documents -o force
This was put into /etc/init.d, and I used 'chmod +x wifi-fix.sh' to change the attributes. Then (if memory serves - it's been quite a while since I tried this method) I used the command 'update-rc.d wifi-fix.sh defaults'.
That didn't work, so I tried adding the last two lines of the above code into /etc/init.d/rc.local.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I have installed openssh.I need to find a way to configure it so that it never start up when I boot into my computer. The reason is: I haven't had the time yet to learn how to set it up and configure it correctly. Until that time comes I don't want it to run at all.Every single time I boot into the system and I have to do that first before I can even do what I really need to on the computer. It's annoying.Does anyone know the best and least complicated way to just make it not run at all until I'm ready to set it up properly? Also how to check what is running on my system after I boot up so I can double check, after making the changes, that it worked right.
