Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

i'm using Centos 5.3 (2.6.27.10-grsec-xxxx-grs-ipv4-64 x86_64 kernel) and i got a problem with installing apf/configuring iptables. It seems that my kernel doesn't support Loadeble Kernel Modules. I'm receiving following message when catting /proc/modules: Quote: cat: /proc/modules: No such file or directory /sbin/modprobe -l FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.27.10-grsec-xxxx-grs-ipv4-64/modules.dep: No such file or directory

I'm trying to compile a kernel for my Crux Linux install. I figured I'd do a 'make defconfig' to setup a .config file with the default configuration and then try to add anything I will need for my specific system. I found a script that scans my system and prints out a list of any current modules I am using. That way I can make sure to add these to my new kernel. It looks something like this:
Code:
ac.ko.gz
agpgart.ko.gz
ata_generic.ko.gz
ata_piix.ko.gz
battery.ko.gz
button.ko.gz
compal-laptop.ko.gz
dcdbas.ko.gz
dell-laptop.ko.gz
drm_kms_helper.ko.gz
drm.ko.gz
ehci-hcd.ko.gz
Is there a way to add these to my current configuration without having to go into 'make menuconfig' and search for each one? It's not too hard to search for many of them. But the ones with short names I'm not finding. Like ac.ko for example. 'ac.ko' returns 0 search results and 'ac' returns anything and everything with those 2 letters in it.

I'm trying to do some network bonding in RHEL 5.4, and I'm not seeing the results I expect. I have set up a number of servers using mode 1 with no issue, but I need to configure a new server differently. bond1 is created from eth1 & eth2 bonded together using mode 802.3ad with layer2 lacp bond0 is created from bond1 & eth3 using mode active-backup with bond1 as the primary interface When I bring the network services up, all traffic is passing over eth3 instead of bond1, which is the primary. Below are the modprobe.conf * ifcfg-* files involved.
My modprobe.conf:
alias eth0 e1000
alias eth1 e1000
alias eth2 e1000
alias eth3 e1000
alias scsi_hostadapter mptbase
alias scsi_hostadapter1 mptsas
alias scsi_hostadapter2 qla2xxx

Maybe its set to be not written by anyone other than networkmanager ??

I'm using 9.10 Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit (but same thing happens on my 32 bit VM on same PC).
My /etc/resolf/conf file is not updated with DNS information on first boot. The DNS information is in the /etc/network/interfaces file.
The trick I have to do every time I reboot the PC is:
Code:
sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
First off, why? Second how can I resolve this issue?
I have three NICs eth0 and 1 are normal LANs connected to the internet, but I choose eth0 as the primary. eth2 is a local private one. the DNS information from eth0 should be in the resolv.conf file but isn't. The file is empty at bootup, except for some comments instructing me not to edit this. After running the above sudo commands the file is properly updated and internet works.
Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file's contents:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
[Code]...

Everyone once in a while Google drives me nuts, this is one such case.Everything I have found from Fedora or Red Hat on stateless or even diskless implementations is old as dirt. Based on Fedora Core 4 or 7. Where is the updated or current documentation for Fedora 13 or 14? With everything going to clouds one would think stateless would be a hot topic again? At least diskless should be right?

we're about to migrate a set of workstations (ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to a new kerberos/LDAP setup. Basically, this requires the installation of some required deb packages and to copy some new .conf files over the original ones.We made a deb package having these "features":requires the needed other packages as dependenciesbacks up original conf filescopies the new conf files to the right places (i.e. /etc/krb5.conf,/etc/ldap.conf)The problem is: apt-get complains because the deb is "touching" files owned by other packages (kerberos, ldap, etc.). Therefore, the only way to skip this check is either to force apt-get to proceed or using the "replaces" directive in the deb control file, specifying the clashing packages. omething like this:
Code:
Package: <package-name>
Version: 0.9.9

I am running Slackware64-current(multi-lib) and I have stumbled across something that I don't fully understand.I have read that the kernel-headers should not be updated as glibc is compiled against them and therefore requires that set of kernel headers. Recently the kernel version has been bumped a couple of times but glibc has stayed the same.Should glibc be re-compiled each time there is a kernel update?
Perhaps someone can explain, in very simple terms, the relationship between the kernel, the kernel headers, the kernel modules and glibc.

I looked for a solution to this, and found a thread for it ,but I dont know how to do what it says. Here is part of it by the user "cameronol": There is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic with the default /etc/X11/xorg.conf involving Nvidia. receive the error"Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'.Then he posts:
[Code]...
Then he says to delete the first section with the default screen, and it will be fixed. But HOW do I look for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit it,and how do I edit it?I am new to ubuntu, but I have learned to use a terminal(I think)It seems to be just like the "run" box on Windows.I did a search for the file, but came up empty.I want to fix this cause every time I restart,I have a low resolution that is impossible to work in.

I installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx a while ago. but then upgraded it to 10.10
I don't have the CD with me right now and i need to fix some mistakes of mine (being a n00b to ubuntu) urgently i.e. i can't wait for morning. Is there anyway i can rollback to the time when my ubuntu installation was in mint condition?
One more thing. Let me tell you my mistake. Almost a month ago i installed Apache2 on my Laptop (for LAMP). and now i have to install Apache Tomcat for JSP development. but the problem is that the files made by Apache2 and the PHP5 installation i made are not removed with
Code:
Code:
So now the apache2 files are superseding the Apache Tomcat. hence i cannot distuinguish between apache2 or apache tomcat when i goto:
Code:
So if anyone has a way of ridding my laptop of this disease without complete overhaul, please post your replies here.
Until then, I will have to defect back to Windows.
