Fedora Installation :: Restore GRUB After Win7 Installation ?

Jul 20, 2010

I just installed Win7 (I need it for work -.-") and, of couse, it installed its boot loader and I can't boot F13 any longer. The question is, how do I restore GRUB from a F13 live installation media without destroying Win7?

I remeber trying something like that a couple of years before when I had the same issue:

Unfortunatelly, that doesn't work and at the next boot I am stuck with Windows again how to restore grub from a F13 live CD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Restore Normal Dual-Boot With Win7: No DVD Drive

Jun 22, 2010

Edit: I have a Sony Vaio FJ170 laptop with Phoenix BIOS version R0060X6 & a broken DVD Drive. The BIOS doesn't support booting from USB (it does have 'External Drive Boot' option, but my USB stick doesn't get listed under boot devices in BIOS when connected to the laptop).

A few days ago I upgraded to Windows7, then installed Lucid through WUBI. With the help of another thread of mine (here), I changed the default boot option & timeout of Windows to zero to directly boot into Ubuntu. So far it was good. But recently I tried to get back to Windows for some reason but could not succeed as the F8 key no longer brings up the Window's Advance Boot Menu.

Is there another way to restore the dual boot menu timeout to get back to the Windows installation. Or even better, is there some way to make a fresh install of Windows & Ubuntu side-by-side without DVD drive. I am only 14 and absolutely new to Linux. The network booting methods given on the Internet were too complex for me to understand. I like Ubuntu but also need Windows for programming C++ & Photoshop CS4.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Bootloader Is Broken / Doesn't Seem To Detect The Win7?

May 2, 2011

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

Ubuntu Installation :: BURG - Can't Boot To Any OS

Sep 5, 2010

Thought BURG would be cool so I installed it. Something is very wrong. (See attached photos) all I get is the 1st photo, BURG version 1.98+20100623-1+karmic. If I tab I get photo 2. At this point I'd be happy just to restore GRUB2 & forget BURG but I can't even boot to any OS. I haven't had Ubuntu on this PC for long so maybe the best, or simplest option, would be to re-install Ubuntu- which would rewrite grub2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing BURG Prevents Windows From Booting?

Apr 19, 2010

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 Beta 2 64-bit
Dual-boot with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Compaq CQ50-215NR laptop with 3GB system memory, 1.9GHz Athlon X2 QL-60 dual-core processor, nVIDIA GeForce 8200M G, 160GB HDD

Today I decided to install the BURG bootmenu on my computer so that I could enjoy nice, pretty graphical bootmenus instead of boring old text-based ones.I installed and configured BURG using this tutorial(after some few snafus wherein I tried to use older tutorials and went through many needless complicated steps that didn't end up working anyway).Restarted, and it worked great - except for one thing. Windows would no longer boot.It would get to the "Starting Windows" screen, then about halfway through there it would flash and restart. It wouldn't start in "Startup Repair Mode" either (the same thing happened). So, I did some frantic googling, and discovered this thread. I followed a set of instructions posted therein to install Lilo, reconfigure my MBR to Windows' liking, and reinstall Grub2.Windows booted after that.Well, I thought that the problem must have been caused by one of the numerous false starts I made while trying to get BURG installed, so I installed BURG again, set it up again, and bang - Windows wouldn't boot any more. So, I re-did the MBR with Lilo again, only this time I forgot to reinstall Grub2 (oops!) and had to boot from my LiveCD and install it thataway. At any rate, I'm fairly certain that installing BURG is what's keeping Windows from booting.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Installation Alongside Win7

Jun 29, 2011

I've been dual booting Ubuntu and winxp for a few years and the Ubuntu installation in my machines has always been a matter of a few clicks, with Ubuntu recognizing my current xp installation and offering to repartition my disk to have both OSs coexist.I recently bought a new laptop (HP dv6t, win7 x64) and while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04, the installer informed me that I would have to get rid of win7 to install the new OS.

What happened to the friendly installer? Is there still an easy way to set up a dual boot in a system in which win7 is already present and an installation cd for it is not available?

OpenSUSE Install :: Win7 Ate The SUSE After System Restore?

Hardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.

Ubuntu Installation :: MBR Fix For Win7 Required Using U10

Jul 28, 2010

I made the MOST basic of errors. I had ubuntu 9 installed on a partition of my netbook HD that was primarily running w7. I was running out of disk space and decided to remove the ubuntu partition as a short term measure - however I didn't change any of my GRUB settings so now I can boot into anything...

In only get a GRUB RESCUE> prompt on trying to boot. From searching the internet I've come to the conclusion that my MBR is F%^ked and need to restore it. I've downloaded ubuntu 10 and can run it from a mem stick, but I cannot get the ms-sys package to install - I keep getting the following error.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install ms-sys
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package ms-sys
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Is there another way of removing GRUB completely? Or is there something else that I can try to successfully install ms-sys?

Ubuntu Installation :: Best Bootloader With 10.04 And Win7?

Oct 3, 2010

What is the preferred bootloader with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7, when multiple booting also with Vista and XP all on one hard drive and each on separate partitions? All are installed except Ubuntu and now boot with the windows boot manager. I have heard that if you install grub 2 on the MBR, then boot windows 7, that it will replace the grub boot code with windows boot code automatically. So is it best to use that NeoSmart EasyBCD tool to add Ubuntu in to the windows boot manager, and can I install grub on the boot sector of Ubuntu's root partition ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting 9.10 And Win7?

Apr 18, 2010

Until very recently I was running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) installed on a 20 GB hard disk and Windows XP (SP3) installed on RAID 1 array of 2 x 250 GB disks, very happily along side each other and using GRUB as the bootloader installed on the smaller 20 GB drive.

I have decided to upgrade to Windows 7, and was struggling with the installation failing with the seemingly quite common "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate and existing partition" error. Google seaching suggested unplugging my Ubuntu drive and then installing Win 7. This worked fine with the Ubuntu drive unplugged, however with the 20 GB plugged back in I can boot to GRUB, but it still has XP in the menu, and no option for Win 7.

I think I could get around the issue by re-installing Ubuntu, which would place GRUB on the MBR which is now on the 250 GB RAID 1 array, but I would rather have the system as it was before with GRUB and Ubuntu on the 20 GB drive.

I know I need to edit GRUB to remove the XP entry from the menu, but I have no idea how I would get Win 7 into GRUB, and what to do about the MBR which Win 7 put onto the RAID 1 array.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Win7 After Upgrade From 9.10

May 18, 2010

I had 9.10 installed for a long time as a dual boot with win7 on this computer. I mostly use win7, but today i went into ubuntu and it said there was a new version available so i installed it.the error occured with the grub installation. it said if i was unsure of where to install it, i should install it on all drives, so I did. ever since then i've been looking online using this liveCD to find some solution to fix the problem, but I cant.here is what i've tried:

1. i downloaded a windows 7 repair disc and used the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but this ends up with a blank screen with a cursor blinking.
2. I've tried re-installing grub, but this ends with the boot freezing at a screen with something like: "sh:grub>" and i can't do anything.
3. I've tried testdisk but this also didn't work for me.

i've been trying to fix this problem for 7 hours now but nothing. so i'm hoping maybe someone here would help my specific situation out.the current status of my computer: i have uninstalled grub in sda1 and sda5 (my ubuntu should be in sda5) and i used the windows7 repair CD to /fixboot and /fixmbr, so now when i boot, it freezes at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. anyone can help me, please?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 And Win7 - Device For Bootloader

Nov 20, 2010

I'm trying to create a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10 on my acer laptop with windows 7. I looked at my hard drive and I found out that it has three partitions, one called System Reversed, another one called PQSERVE or something like that (which is a recovery partition since acer laptops dont have a recovery cd), and the third partition is C:.

So I shrunk my C: drive, and created a 44gb partition for ubuntu, and a 6gb swap. I then booted with the ubuntu cd and went into manual partitioning. I selected the 44gb partition as "/", and set the 6gb partition to swap. The problem is at the very bottom of the partition manager, where it says "Device for boot loader installation". I get several choices, and I'm a bit unsure which one to choose.

The choices are as follows:
/dev/sda ATA WDC WD5000BEVT-2 (500,1GB)
/dev/sda1 Windows Vista (loader)
/dev/sda2 Windows 7 (loader)
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6

My first thought was of course why do I have a vista loader? I don't even have vista!
