upgraded from Karmic to Lucid Friday. All seems OK, except I now have a "Uzb" icon in my taskbar. When I click it, it's the keyboard layout settings, which are now set to "Uzbekistan" by default.When I remove Uzb, to leave just GB, the icon disappears

if I click partial upgrade, it looks like it did during the upgrade, then says:

if I click close from the first "not all updates can be installed" dialog, it says:

In Synaptic, fixing broken packages does nothing. Mark All Updates > Apply seems to work, but I'd still like to figure out why Update Manager does not?
I have tried to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on my Aspire One netbook. I tried both the full version and the netbook remix and both installations stall at the keyboard layout stage. I select the layout and click forward but it stalls and doesn't go any further. Anyone else have this problem on any of their machines or do you think it could just be specific to the Aspire One? I just find it odd that it happened on both versions. They work fine in live mode so I don't know what could be causing this.

So for me, since I upgraded, keyboard input (either local or via VNC, so it isnt hardware) does nothing for either the caps lock key or the shift key. Kinda makes it imnpossible to eneter @ or any uppercase character, for example !

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I'm having a problem with the graphics card.
I have dual screens, and I'm using the default card. My Left screen is perfectly normal but my right screen has a black bar, roughly 2cm wide, along the left hand side of it. And that hole screen is shifted to the left 2cm (so if I maximise a window in it you can't see about 2 cm of the right edge).
I'm not sure why this is happening. Worked on Karmic. Haven't installed anything, just the defaults. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870.
Also, I couldn't get Compiz to work with this card on Karmic, is it possible to get it to work here on Lucid? I heard they were improving the drivers. If so, how?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI has a look at the release candidate today as a live DVD and found that my keyboard settings were incorrect. I was obliged to remove the USA settings from the keyboard layout.
When I reverted to Karmic I found that it was necessary to correct the keyboard settings back to UK as somehow or other the settings from the live DVD registered.
It might be worth watching for this when testing/using live DVD before full adoption
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.4 on a Dell Studio 1537 Laptop with a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 USB Keyboard. Currently, my keyboard is not responding at all. It's been like this for half a day now. With the exception that it was working fine for quite some time, it used to periodically, and randomly do this out of the blue. Meaning I can come up with nothing logical to tell me why it stops working. The only hint is that the problem first occurred after my upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running a fresh install of Lucid 64bit with Desktop effects enabled and the latest driver from Nvidia 195.36.24 (but had the problem also with the ubuntu repo driver. The issue can be reproduced as follows. Set AWN to group common windows (I believe this is the default) Open several gedit windows (or any other app) Then open firefox and maximize the window (or simply move the window so it's directly above your gedit dock icon.) In the AWN dock, select the gedit icon and try and select an open gedit window. When you click the gedit icon in the AWN dock, you'll see a popup with all of your gedit windows. If you move the mouse to attempt and select one of the gedit's, the menu disappears and you can't select anything.

However, when I use VNC to connect to my desktop, I'd have to pan around a lot, so I use wmctrl via a script to resize Eclipse (and Chrome, etc.) to better fit my smaller VNC viewport.
When I return to my dual-monitor desktop, I want to resize/move my windows again. But wmctrl does not work correctly. If I do

(from a script), then instead of putting the window at 0,0 and width 3200, the window appears on the second monitor (i.e. at 1600,0) with width 1600. So I must manually resize it which is more difficult.
Am I using wmctrl correctly? Is it not wmctrl's problem but my window manager? I'm using compiz in Ubuntu 10.10.
I've got a generic USB keyboard (not wireless) that works perfectly on WinXP, the BIOS and the GRUB boot menu. As soon as Ubuntu 10.04 loads, however,he keyboard stops working. Tried different ports, still nothing. I haven't tested on previous versions of Ubuntu or other Linux distros. A PS/2 keyboard works great on Ubuntu except the one I have is broken, hence why I'm using this USB keyboard. Any ideas on how to fix this? I have just updated ubuntu from koala to lynx via reloading the synaptic repositories, and after having restarting, to boot into lynx, found that my laptop's keyboard doesnt work, none of the keys are reponding at all, which is odd as I have never had this problem with my laptop before.. I thought this might have been a (semi) common problem with lynx, but after a few searches, have not found anything similar to this problem..Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem here, I can still use the laptop to do things via the mouse and even access the internet and grab text and paste it for things, but obviously would like my keyboard back (i didnt write this on my laptop!) I am 99.9% sure it is not a hardware problem

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to get Ubuntu blazing fast and I started out by changing the swappiness to just 10 and got a huge performance spike. I was very happy with that. Then I used rcconf and GNOME's startup applications GUI and edited out quite a bit but still have a somewhat slow boot. Well, the next thing I thought I should do is edit the inittab and rid my self of some surely unneeded services. Well, according to this website, Ubuntu doesn't use this inittab, but etc/event.d doesn't exist either! Well I looked in /etc for something related to init, and I believe I have found where these services are called upon. /etc/init.d and /etc/init.
Now the files contain many scripts for different services so I was wondering how to edit these to turn them off to optimize my boot! Do I comment out the unneeded ones? My next question is what strategy should I use as I edit these? I think I can get rid of "ssh" and "cups" and "samba" since I don't use these. Can someone point me to a nice list of services and their functions? I just want to optimize Ubuntu as much as possible to not only have a fast computer for my self and family to use, but to impress Windows users with the speed that can be obtained from Linux!
I'm using an Apple bluetooth keyboard, model A1016 the one with a white bottom inside clear plastic. The machine is a Mac Mini (2,1) and I also have an Apple bluetooth mouse. The mouse works fine on Ubuntu 10.04. The keyboard has issues.
When I add the keyboard using the bluetooth applet, I find that I can't assign a specified PIN. I have to use automatic PIN, and then type the random number presented. That works until I reboot the machine.
After reboot the bluetooth applet menu shows both the mouse (connected) and the keyboard (not connected). If I tell it to connect the keyboard, nothing happens. The only thing I can do is delete the keyboard, re-add it, with a new random PIN.
I have tried Lucid on two computers. Wireless mouse and keyboard are DEAD. Even the server version (before the desktop is installed) ignores them. If I connect a wired mouse or keyboard they both work fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu Lucid for six months now without problems. Last night my keyboard suddenly stopped working in any applications under Gnome. Rebooting didn't help. Mouse still works fine.But the keyboard still works fine when typing in my password, and if I start KDE instead it also works OK. So it doesn't seem to be hardware failure.I see from googling that others have had similar problems, but most seem to have been on installation, and involved either VMWare or USB keyboards. I'm not using either of those.When it broke I was trying to build PyCairo into an alternative installation of Python2.5, don't know if this is relevant, if some key package got somehow corrupted.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Firefox 3.5.8 and the Synaptic touch pad driver for laptops. The problem occurs no matter if I choose to reinstall Firefox or the driver, a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10, or a combination of them. As I browse through Firefox, on no certain, but continually occurring occasion my mouse cursor distorts as I hover over links.
The distortion look as if the cursor is rapidly alternating between its normal state and the link hovering state. The thing is, this happens so rapidly it can become distracting and even downright maddening, as it sometimes doesn't click the link. The best term for the oddity is: it freaks out; it goes crazy. This has happened on various themes and preference settings, so it apparently has nothing to do with that. It does not happen anywhere else apart from Firefox, as far as I know. I think this is a generic Ubuntu-Firefox bug, but I have not been able to retrieve a solution.
I upgraded to 10.04 on my Macbook and everything was working fine. Now, my keyboard isn't working at all. I didn't do any system tweaks or anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedKarmic there was a tab inside "System->Preferences->Appearance" called "Interface" which allowed me to modify the keyboard shortcuts. I had <Backspace> to move backwards in Nautilis and <Shift><Backspace> to move forward.
Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.
I typically have pidgin and amsn, as well as firefox and thunderbird running.Once in a while, the left mouse button ceases to function as the left button, and the right button becomes the left button, or almost.. I wonder if this is a bug, or am I hitting the left-handed-mouse function while typing accidentally??

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.3 (64 bit) with the latest kernel update as of yesterday. I've recently moved from NFSv3 to NFSv4 on 4 servers. Between the 4 servers there are 9 exported directories. All of them work except 1 on 1 of the 4 servers.

Well that explains why the NFSv4 mount of /apps/oracle fails because for some reason it can't "see" any files below that, but as I say the ftpserver sub-dir & mount are fine.
We have Nagios running on a server, and are installing NRPE as a daemon on web servers we need to monitor. I'm two servers in and have hit a small snag. The two servers we're currently trying to monitor are, to the best of our knowledge, very similar (Centos 5.4, Apache, MySQL, PHP etc etc), and the installations of NRPE on them should be the same. One is being monitored just fine, however we can't check on the other one without including the -n switch (to disable SSL) in the check_nrpe call. If we don't, however, the error we get is, "CHECK_NRPE: Socket timeout after 10 seconds.". In /var/log/messages on the machine that fails we see:

The only kind of related thing I can think of that's different between the two machines is that one (the one that works) has actually had an SSL certificate installed on it, for the site it hosts.

Everything used to work fine but then the server ip changed and I can no longer access it with the web name and have to use the ip directly
