previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

The title says it all. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my PS3, but the keyboard isn't typing. I can't complete the install, because I can't type anything. I've followed all the steps properly, everything goes smoothly, the mouse works just fine, and the capslock and numlock lights light up on the keyboard, and toggle when I press the corresponding buttons. The keyboard even works at the kboot prompt. After I choose the partition to use, I have to enter my information to continue. Without being able to type, I can't progress. The keyboard obviously works, since I can type just fine at the kboot prompt.This one's got me scratching my head. I'm going to try a 9.04 cd tomorrow, see if that works, but I was really hoping to get 9.10 on there.

During the installation, I tried to change the default keyboard mapping to Spanish, but right now, when the system boots it uses an English mapping. I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.

I am trying to play with my WLAN by changing its modulation, power, bitrate, channel etc. When I am trying to change the modulation type i had an error like this # iwconfig wlan0 modu 11g Error for wireless request "Set Modulation" (8B2F) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. so i checked for different modulation types my WLAN supports this produced an error like this.

I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:

Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"

Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?
I am running 10.10 on a few deferent machines, and my problem is this, My son's name is Sren I am using a U.S. keyboard and can't seem to figure out how to configure it to make the on mac it is option+o and on win it is alt+0248. but there does not seem to be any easy way to set this up in Ubuntu. for now I have to google his name then cut the out and paste it where it should be,

How does one set it so one does not have to go down and change the file types every time? So that it shows all file types, all the time, by default.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi currently have both xubuntu 10.10 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit installed on my laptop which i use mostly for college work and basic programming (i'm still learning to program).i have a 150gb partition with win7 installed, a 20gb partition with xubuntu installed and a 15gb partition with my linux home folder on, the rest of the space is unused because i thought i may need it for something else in the future.the home folder partition is formatted to etc4, i now have a need to access this data from win7 for college work, i know that windows doesn't support mounting of etc file systems so i have hit a problem.
i thought about changing the type of partition from a ect4 to fat32 but will this delete my data? or ,are there any third party software packages for windows that will allow me to mount ect4?
Yesterday, after browsing for a while, my keyboard suddenly started to show different characters than typed. The keys are just typing different letters than pressed. For example, the j displays a 1, the k displays a 2, and so on. This only happens on the x server. On the terminal, before starting the x server, the keyboard works just fine.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.
upgraded from Karmic to Lucid Friday. All seems OK, except I now have a "Uzb" icon in my taskbar. When I click it, it's the keyboard layout settings, which are now set to "Uzbekistan" by default.When I remove Uzb, to leave just GB, the icon disappears
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have added a Latvian keyboard layout to my Ubuntu 9.10 system (Russian as the system language). I cannot type Latvian letters with diacritical marks. I chose an apostrophe-based keyboard layout, so that I get the letter I need by pressing an apostrophe before. For example, to get ā, I would press 'a.The problem is, when I press ' followed by a letter or space bar, nothing appears on the screen. I continue typing as normal, but each time I press an apostrophe, the next character I press displays nothing on the screen. I have tried installing a Latvian language pack through System -> Administration -> Language Support. It was generally a useful addition. But it did not solve the problem. I still could not type Latvian. After that, I tried removing the Latvian layout from settings and adding it again. It did not help. I tried removing the layout, restarting my computer, and adding the layout back. The problem was not resolved.
I have tried different Lativan layouts (with tilde, with F, and standard). I had the same problem regardless of the layout I used. I browsed dozens of forum threads, and in one of them I found a workaround for this problem. For example, to type �, I hold down Shift and Control together, and while holding them press u0160 (because 0160 is a hex code for � in the character map). The first 0 is not significant, so to save time I type u160. I looked up the hex codes for the letters I need in Applications -> Accessories -> Character Map. In that application, at the bottom of the window, for each letter there is a code U+(four hex digits) e.g. U+012A. I wrote out all the codes I need on a small paper slip and stuck it to my monitor.Entering symbols this way is rather inconvenient. But at least it is possible.How to enter Latvian letters using just a Latvian keyboard layout? Is it a bug I should file? Would be great to find out.
my keyboard layout keep changing from windows to windows. When I am using my French keyboard, I set the keyboard to English and it doesn't make the change for all the open windows, despite having selected the "separate layout for each windows" unselected.Plus if I am in firefox with a French layout go to another windows and come back to the firefox windows, the layout is back to GBR.

I export the output of some applications (like Skype, Google Chrome etc.) to my Windows desktop, where I run Xming as my X server. Everything works pretty neat, but... I can't change the keyboard layout, because the applications are running on the remote machine. So is there a way to change the keyboard layout in CLI?

Suddenly (after using this keyboard for 6 months), some randomly times I need to press the button 6-7 times before something appears on screen. This happens randomly, I may be able to type a whole paragraph without problem, and suddenly I can't type anymore for few seconds. My system is opensuse 11.3 and it happened last friday 9/10 ( if it is related to any update). I tested the keyboard to another pc and it is working. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed Ubuntu on my laptop I selected English US (dead keys) as my keyboard layout, but a couple of days ago I decided to change it to English US (dead keys ALTGR) so I just went to the keyboard settings and added the layout, then deleted the old one "English US (dead keys)", logged out and selected the new one "English US (dead keys ALTGR)", logged back in and then restarted, and now I can't boot into Ubuntu, all I get is Grub but when I enter to Ubuntu I get a black screen and the Caps Lock light blinking.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI decided to give Linux another chance and installed Ubuntu Server. During the setup, I was asked about my keyboard layout in a rather cumbersome way. I remember answering a number of questions and even having to type a few keys so that Ubuntu could guess the layout, rather than just letting me select "Swedish". But that's okay; Ubuntu guessed right and suggested me to use to Swedish layout.
After setup I was still left with some standard US layout. This deserves ranting about. I may have expected to run into some show-stopper this time too, but I never expected it to be something as fundamental as getting the keyboard layout right! Anyway, I googled and found the same suggested answer in many places:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup I ran it a few times now (selecting UTF-8 and Latin1 mostly), but it makes no difference. There is no setting for keyboard layout there, so I don't see why it would work. Are all server admins expected to get a US keyboard or what?
Since yesterday I have been having a strange and fairly aggravating keyboard problem. For some reason I am sometimes unable to type upper-case characters. My shift key doesn't behave normally. If I type shift-C, for example, nothing happens; if I try it several times, sometimes the character will eventually appear, sometimes preceded by a ) character. What's worse, some key combinations, such as shift-I, kill the brightness on the screen. After this happens a couple of times, the mouse freezes, and only a reboot will restore it. This does not seem to be remedied by logging out of the session (either gnome or KDE) and into another session. The problem seems to affect both desktop environments.
This problem seems to be intermittent. For example, it seems to be working normally now, but about five minutes ago GNOME gave me a bug reporting window on boot and informed me that the keyboard-switcher panel applet had crashed. I have tried exciting to a console with ctrl-alt-F1 while my keyboard is behaving in this way, and have found that my keyboard does not work correctly in the console either.
I would normally use several keyboard layouts as I need to write in several languages, but I have turned them all off and reset the keyboard control panels to defaults in both environments, and I am still experiencing the problem.

Am carrying out installation of CentOS-5.5 on a Sun fire X2270 server using PXE. The installation starts well but on getting to the keyboard type the installation halts. View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought this not too long ago and it worked great in my ubuntu 8.04 install. When in windows I decided to pair the bluetooth combo with a different bluetooth dongle. After changing it back to the original MS dongle (which I used in ubuntu) the keyboard no longer responds in ubuntu. It works in the CMOS, it works on my windows computer, but not in ubuntu anymore. Mouse works fine, and so does the touch pad on the keyboard.
Is there any way around this? I've tried re-pairing, and waiting a very long time...

Wrote a file named "ChangeKeyboardToUS" which reads

All that syntax is as per [URL] ....
I put that file into my local bin (home/bj/bin) and in terminal add that to my path with the command:
export PATH=$PATH:/home/bj/bin.
When I run the script in a terminal (by typing "ChangeKeyboardToUS" I get "Permission Denied". Even running it as su, still get the same response.
