Ubuntu Multimedia :: Radeon HD4870 On Lucid Bar Appears Whilst Dual Screen?
May 7, 2010
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I'm having a problem with the graphics card.
I have dual screens, and I'm using the default card. My Left screen is perfectly normal but my right screen has a black bar, roughly 2cm wide, along the left hand side of it. And that hole screen is shifted to the left 2cm (so if I maximise a window in it you can't see about 2 cm of the right edge).
I'm not sure why this is happening. Worked on Karmic. Haven't installed anything, just the defaults. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4870.
Also, I couldn't get Compiz to work with this card on Karmic, is it possible to get it to work here on Lucid? I heard they were improving the drivers. If so, how?

I have properly ejected a USB memory stick and removed it from the port, but it remains in my 'Places', on the side pane of Nautilus. The /media directory is empty.

I recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and was having trouble getting 3D graphics enabled on my ATI card. I am running on an MacPro3,1I read through this guide as I was having errors regarding fglrx so I uninstalled it and as instructed issued the following:
Code:
sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists)
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a PC with the integrated Radeon X200 card. Currently, I have the free Radeon drivers, but they're either awful or aren't working properly. I get some wonky graphics errors, and any 3D game crashes as soon as the 3D graphics are to be displayed.
My card is no longer supported by fglrx. What can I do?

When I put my laptop, a Presario X1000 to sleep that uses Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500], when it comes back up, I get just black and white "nosie" on the screen.
Even after I do cntr+alt+F1 and then cntrl+alt+F7 it still doesn't appear to restore the regular screen.

I currently have a Hp NC8430 laptop running 10.04 and this one is amazing and love it, but my video card wont allow me to hook up an external monitor. I can enable compiz, but nothing else. When i install the ATI driver from the website for catalyst it allows the external monitor to work, but now compiz wont work? I dont understand what i am doing wrong and would like if someone could help me. My Video car is a ATI mobility Radeon x1600 and is not supported anymore which sucks so if anyone knows of where to get opensource drivers that would be awesome or a way to set this up. I would hate to have to use another distro, but i need external support.

I have a working two-monitor setup with an ATI HD4870 (Samsung 23" @ 1920x1080 and 20" @ 1600x900).I also have an nVidia 8600GT plugged into the secondary PCI-Express port that I use with a third monitor (17" @ 1280x1024) within Windows 7.I want this third monitor running in Linux as well. I have already tried installing the kmod-nvidia driver, but that screwed up my xorg.conf every boot, so I've reverted back to my old setup. What I'd ideally need is all three screens in a "big desktop" setup. My current xorg.conf is:
Code:
[craig@galileo ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically. Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I have an ECS A785GM-M and the integrated HD4200 HDMI audio was working out of the box on a clean Ubuntu 10.04 install. After the updates and all, everything still worked just fine for a month.
Then, I installed a HD4870 with ATI DVI to HDMI adapter and the sound is not working (it works flawlessly on Windows 7, so it is not the hardware). The creepy stuff is that on Pulseaudio GUI configuration, everything looks right: ATI 48x0 HDMI is selected as output and when some sound is playing the bar moves, although there is no sound coming from the TV speakers.
I tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested on this link, but it didn't helped. I'm kind lost here, since it looks that there is nothing wrong and yet, it is not working.

Hi I am new to ubuntu and am having major problems setting my displays up. my setup is a hd TV to the Left of my pc monitor, i have managed to configure catalyst to let me have a main display with the second display being an extension of the first, the problem is i cannot seem to swap my primary display, at the minute my HDTV has all the taskbars and everything on it while my pc monitor is just a blank background, i would like it so i could start a film playing for my children, then drag it across to the HDTV while i can still use my pc in the background.

I am running a 2.7Gh with 2G ram with an ATI X1300/1550 Radeon Card and running with dual monitors. I had the monitors functioning in Linux Mint but it was an older driver version and it was slow. I was reading about the Ubuntu Maverick 32bit and fresh installed it I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 32bit. Everything that I have found on here concerning ATI and fglxr has not worked.

I am running Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment.
I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.
Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.
I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.

I have successfully installed an ATI EAH4350 (Radeon 4350) to work as a dual head in Ubuntu 10.04 but there is a bug though, which I noticed given the following scenario:
* Dual Head config (Multi-desktop)
* Monitor 1
- Running firefox and terminal
* Monitor 2
- Running WinXP in Virtual Box 3.1.6
- Virtual Box is in full screen mode
- WinXP is showing a flash movie using firefox also full screen mode
* Monitor 2 is configured above Monitor 1.
Sometimes the mouse gets trapped at the top of Monitor 1 (in between the two monitors). Keyboard doesn't function as well but the currently running apps continue to operate "normally". Ctrl + Alt + Fx doesn't work.
What is frustrating is when it happens it's beyond my control. I can't do anything else besides reset the PC.

When Karmic came along, I upgraded and it was possible for the first time to get a dual monitor display working using only the GUI apps supplied. (I think I used screen resolution) It worked out of the box and took no time whatsoever.
I had a dual monitor set up working with 2 1024 x 768 monitors, with a desktop spanning both, and a background picture doing the same.
The Lucid update has just spectacularly broken this, along with a large number of desktop type changes that were unwanted.
The version of Ubuntu was the usual vanilla, but with enough K stuff installed to make K3b work. The card is a Radeon 9250SE.
Give up and re-install Karmic? Wait for some sort of upgrade to allow either Monitors or Multiple Screens to work - the option to remove cloning is greyed out in one and unticking clone in the other does nothing? Try some other distro?
Does anyone know of a decision to remove any functionality from Lucid that existed in Karmic? Is there any useful background to this that is perhaps not obvious?

In the previous kernel 2.6.31, everything works as expected (also when I boot Lucid with that kernel). On 2.6.32, the only thing I get is two clones. Is there some new type of configuration required that I missed or should I still compile some new kernel module???

i installed kubuntu 9.04 yesterday and updated it with everything that was available, i have ati radeon xpress 1100 and i got everything running fine including kwin effects but i have a small problem i cant figure out how to fix:
When i run glxgears and put any window on top of it, i can still see the 3d gears rolling and i think this same problem is responsible for occasional artifacts on the screen. Its a very minor problem but i would like to see if fixed because i cannot use google earth properly, it seems that any 3d application likes to be focused on the screen, its like they flicker while being overlaid on top of everything.
Also i read the countless threads here complaining about not being able to use fglrx etc because of updated xorg. Well the reason im using 9.04 is because my wireless card alfa awus036h does not work with kernel > 2.6.31 and i have already tried kubuntu 9.10 on this laptop i wasnt having any problem with the display. All the kwin effects ran fine and no distortions of any kind. Seems there is some bug in 9.04.

I have a Logitech Quickcam Chat webcam (USB ID 046d:092c) that's worked with my Ubuntu with minimal problems (just some nVidia driver crap) for ages now. I'm not using nVidia anymore (Intel now), but since my fresh install of Lucid, my webcam doesn't seem to capture anything. It is detected by lsusb, but when I open Cheese, the picture is just black. Skype doesn't give me any video at all, not even that annoying static or green lines. Clicking the Test button in my Skype Options undedoesn't do anything;double-clicking it gives me a full-screen grey screen - pressing Escape takes me back to the preferences window. After I get the grey full screen and press Escape, the Test button is gone until I close the Options window and open it up again.Going into gstreamer-properties and testing v4l2 (under Video -> Default Input) just shows me the 'Testing ... Click Ok to finish' window for ages until I close it - no video appears or anything and I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be seeing. Testing with the 'Test Input' option does give me the coloured lines and static. Testing v4l seems to make it crash, but no error comes up in the terminal I'm running it from.lsusb output:

I'm trying to get my Dual Monitor setup working. I have a 1900x1080 LCD and a 1280x1020 LCD. Cards are dual nvidia 7600GT.
I had the system set up using TwinView for a while but I opted to switch over to "Separate X Screen" so that the two displays could serve as separate desktops with different functions. Initially they were both running off of GPU0 and everything was fine. I then decided to swap the smaller monitor over to GPU1 to make better use of my available resources. I have no issue using the nVidia configuration utility and all appears well but when I respart X it comes up with a black screen and a white mouse cursor and then just lags. The mouse moves initially but after a few minutes it freezes and the whole system locks. I have to hard reboot and then it comes up with only one monitor. Inspection of the xorg.conf file shows that it has disabled the second monitor in order to start X.
Can someone look at my xorg.conf and see if there's anything obvious that would cause it to break? Is there some issue with separate cards that is fundamentally different from a dual-head card?

I have a 24inch monitor and a LCD TV both connected to my graphic card, by HDMI for the TV and DVI for the monitor. Here's my problem: I would like GDM and Boxee to start simultaneously when I start my computer, Boxee displayed on my TV and GDM on my monitor. I made some research and I unfortunately did not found anything about starting a graphical software and GDM in parrallel (two separated DISPLAY). I have no particular attachment to GDM so if you think it would be easier to use the classic login prompt or another Display-Manager do not hesitate, The crux is to have an authentification system before accessing to Gnome and an detached Boxee running on my TV.

I've played around with a second monitor, but so far I haven't found a satisfying solution. I am using a laptop with a GeForce 9600M GS graphics card. I have managed to set up twinview, but my monitors don't have the same height so I'd rather have something like the "seperate x screen" option. Or how I imagine that option would be like. After some problems with the nvidia configuration tool (I couldn't change the xorg.conf, until I read this: [URL] I now have two separate screens, but the second one is all empty, with black background and X-shaped mouse cursor.
There seems to be no window manager running, I can start programs there with -display :0.1 , but they don't get any frame decoration and, which is worse, no keyboard focus. I'd be fine with a fullscreen konsole there, so I don't really need a window manager, but I do need access from the keyboard. I'd prefer a setup that would allow me to easily (without editing xorg.conf) switch between using both monitors and using only one, because I don't always use the laptop at home.

I use Ubuntu Netbook Remix, and I've installed Lucid over Karmic. (Not an upgrade process, because I didn't have enough space on my primary drive.) I have an Acer AL1511 LCD screen attached as a second screen - ie dual head. All that works fine. However....
I rely on xcalib from Stefan Doehla to invert my screen gamma ramps, ie turn them to white text on black backgrounds. This worked perfectly, just using
xcalib -i -alter
but now, xcalib only inverts the netbook screen. The second screen remains stubbornly unaffected.
Since xcalib has not changed, and it works on one screen, maybe something changed between Karmic and Lucid.

After a few tries, I managed to install Ubuntu on my 3rd generation Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1). I installed the proprietary drivers for the Nvidia graphics card and got all the other features working with the information from this page. However, I am having various problems getting the screens working as I would like. When my laptop is at my desk, it is connected to an external 24-inch monitor via DVI, however I regularly disconnect this screen when I go to uni etc.
Ideally I would like Ubuntu to do the following (all of which I can do in Windows and Mac, or the equivalent thereof): Auto-detect when the external monitor is plugged in, set that monitor as the primary screen (with gnome panel etc). And auto-detect when it is unplugged and set the laptop screen as primary.
Support moving windows between both screens Compiz on both screens Separate colour calibration on each screen So far, I have only been able to get a subset of these working at once. I got 2 working alone, without any compiz and the colour calibration only worked on the laptop screen. I got 3 and 4 working without being able to move windows between screens. I have not been able to get 1 working at all - when I disconnect the monitor, I have to tell the nvidia control panel it is gone.
Is there any way to get all four of these things working? I would be willing to sacrifice 3 if 1, 2, and 4 were all working. (I posted this thread to Apple users as well, but I figure there will be more activity here).
