Debian :: Didn't List Ubuntu Or Windows 7 Installation

I just installed Debian and when it was almost done it asked me something about GRUB installtation. It said the only loader in the main boot loader file or something was Vista but I don't even have vista installed on my laptop. It didnt list my Ubuntu or Windows 7 installation so I picked to set the boot location (or whatever) manually to (hd0,2) .. just to be save. Now when starting up the computer it only gives me Ubuntu and Windows 7 as options. Ubuntu starts but when I try to start Windows 7 it gets stuck at the 'starting windows' logo. Another thing I wasn't sure about in the installation was the format of the partition.. I just picked Ext4 (I read somewhere it was good ).
I installed the thing on an empty Logical partition (not primary.. couldn't figure out how to do that without formatting my disks). I wish to get my W7 back up and the Debian to show up in my boot list.. Right now I can only access my Ubuntu so you'll have to guide me through here

i was installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. But when the installer reach step 4, i cannot see my partitions on my computer that i has previously made. I already enter the manual partition editor sectin, but the list show that my harddisk has no parition no it. The weird thing is that i can normally access my partition on ubuntu live-cd's file browser, but it didn't appear on my installation wizard. Here is a screenshot of my desktop:

I've installed Debian on another partition aside with Windows XP: and when I restart the machine it only list the Debian instalation.
When I do fdisk-l, I see this

I just installed Debian, after having some experience as a Ubuntu and Mint user. I'm not sure if this is normal, but my installation didn't include neither 'make' nor ' gcc', which I thought were very basic programs. They where in the cd though, I installed them through apt. I realized that they weren't there when I tried to install the drivers for a D Link DWA 525 wireless card. I was able to install the drivers on Ubuntu, but I can't do it on Debian. When I try to 'make' it, there is an error. I don't recall the exact error (since I have to reboot back and forth in order to get internet access, I won't post it right now).

I am a rookie to both Debian and Linux. There is a need of Debian so I just started my experience with the Linux system.
I have installed the Debian squeeze testing version and since when I installed the system it didn't recognize my ethernet card, I could only install what is in the installation CD1. Now I have a nice looking Debian system but very simple with a lot of necessary packages or whatever missing (I don't even have the update manager). Is there some way that I could launch an automatic installation of content in the rest CDs from internet?

The story was starting newbie named cassamovefall installing graphic driver for his new Debian Squeeze. Here his uname -r : 2.6.38-bpo.2-686-bigmem He use Dell N4110 notebook, with specs : Core I5-2410M & Dual Graphics ( Intel HD 3000 & ATI Radeon HD 6630M with codename TURKS )

He had tried kinds driver to install it; from fglrx, ati, radeon & radeonhd ; and also with kind ways. But they are gave same result, when login screen should appear, but it didn't. It's just showed blank black screen with blinking '_' (underscore) at top left. This is his Xorg.0.log when using radeon driver, via recovery-mode (text based) :

I have recently (today) installed Debian on a logical partition of my master hard disk, but when booting it will just list Debian or Debian recovery not listing windows at all. I know there may be some that will think that is a good thing but I do need access to windows.
I had a root about and found this thread which I thought might solve the problem as it is similar:

But when I got to the part where I entered the command su -c "nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg" the terminal prompt changed to a > and I felt a little unsure of what I was doing as I would have prefered to have opened the grub.cfg file as a text file, as it is I recieved a syntax error.
As you can probably tell Linux to me appears to be a bit of a black art, but I am enthusiastic none the less. I will list the output of the terminal window so that you may see the steps I have taken.

I am newbie in linux and trying it on my virtualbox. I am trying customize my envireonment. I like when my opened windows list placed vertically. I can do it in Windows and Debian + LXDE easily but what about Debian + Gnome? I can't find any settings for that.

I have a dual boot with Win XP which I rarely use. I went into XP and used a program which became unresponsive, so I ALT CTRL DEL to get into Task manager and tried to end the process. Anyway the computer froze and I had to do a hard shutdown (with the power button). Now XP will only boot to Safe mode. If I try to go into normal mode it just goes to the XP screen before login and shows and endless bar timer. I am afraid to use my XP disc to repair XP as I might lose my Ubuntu partition. How do I safely fix XP?

I'm testing out 10.04 on one of my partitions, and I love it. I have been using it exclusively for a while now, I have not logged into Windows since! Really don't care about windows anymore!However, yesterday I went to boot into windows... and I noticed the option to choose it is missing from my list! Maybe I'm just not getting to the correct list? The list I get shows like 5 different modes and versions of Ubuntu and something called Windows Recovery (which does nothing), but that's it.

i have recently installed ubntu 9.10 and u wanted to dual boot it with xp that i already got installed i have installed it and than i didnt know how to get two my windows back becuse the grub menu didnt show and it had bugs . so i formted the ubunttu partion (to ntfs) with the live cd of it and now wiil now boot windows it showes me "grub recovery>" commend line somthing like that what to do to boot my windows back i am now with the live cd of ubuntu wrting you this.

ive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..

I tried to change the basic toolbar to cairo dock,a tutorial that i found told me to write in terminal gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.listso i write it and a window opened,i couled not find the text that told me(the tutorial i mean)so i closed the window,after that i keep taiking the same error

I have added to Debian Wheezy testing repositories. After a restart there is no desktop anymore just the wallpaper picture is visible but no desktop pop-ups.
When I want to install the desktop through recovery mode, I get an error message that it "can't fetch...repos". How I can repair /etc/apt/sources.list through recovery mode?

In order to try debian 6, I started by using debian 6 live, I burnt the following file ((debian-live-6.0.0-i386-kde-desktop.img ) as iso via cdbernerxp (from windosw xp), I tried to use with my old pc pentium 4, 512 mb ram,120 gb of hard dsk space, but it didn't start, it just stuck at menu (live, failsafe etc...).

I have installed Debian a few times now (and other distro's), so I'm fairly used to installing linux. I'm not used to installing it on Apple hardware (back in 2009 on my laptop I had some issues that were solved rather quickly, but that's about it). Now I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a new (well, bought today, but it is the previous model: iMac 11,2) desktop iMac.
Installing goes well (resizing partition, rEFIt, booting Debian 6.0.1a netinstall CD, installing packages etc.) I followed a tutorial [URL] to install grub explicitly with force after installing and running gptsync. Everything went according to the tutorial and I rebooted to be welcomed by rEFIt and then grub: perfect!
BUT when I chose Debian in the grub-selection list, I only see a few lines of starting the kernel, and then my screen goes all black. A few seconds later I hear a sound, and iirc it's the sound of gdm prompting to select a user. I cannot switch to a TTY and I have to use the power-button to shut the system down.

I have gotten Debian working quite well on my Sony Vaio laptop for the past 6 months or so, and it's a very rewarding experience. I however have a small amount of problems that I could not find the answer to through googling or reading Debian instructions.
1) I have an Atheros-based wireless chipset in my laptop that didn't work with the default wireless drivers in Debian. So I replaced them with madwifi drivers and it works great now. However, every time I restart the computer, it defaults back to 1mb/s wireless speed; making me go into root terminal and change the speed with "iwconfig ath0 rate 54M". Obviously this gets a little bit annoying to enter every time, so I am looking for a way to make it automatic. I have looked on Google and gotten some hits but none of them have been successful.
2) Whenever I put the computer on stand-by then return, the wifi refuses to connect. Networkmanager tries to connect then crashes. I have found no hits on this issue with my configuration. Very odd.

When is the 10.04 upgrade going to show on my update manager? I have been running the update manager since yesterday and the 10.04 upgrade hasn't shown up yet. It is still showing an upgrade to 8.10. I have been waiting to upgrade while exploring and using the 8.04 LTS Hardy. Now that it has been released it isn't showing on the update manager.

I just installed ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) on my system. I mounted / on my SSD and /home on my HD. The installation proceeded for a while and then I suddenly got a message that the installer crashed. Nevertheless the installed linux seems to work and I can boot in Ubuntu. Not sure what exactly is wrong now that the install didn't complete. Any way for me to check what went wrong and what exactly I can do to make sure my system is ok? All appears ok but appearances can be deceiving.

I'm using a system which is based around 9.04 and yes I know this is not the latest and greatest however the softwares in question hasn't been confirmed on the newest version of ubuntu. However I was doing a new build and noticed when I went to do and apt-get install there didn't appear to be any repo's I'm just wondering have the repo's for 9.04 been turned off??

I've been using Ubuntu and Mint for a few years now, and I want to try Linux on my HP Stream7 Tablet. I was very excited to learn that Debian 8.0 and later has support for 32 bit UEFI on 64 bit Processors and went ahead and installed the multiarch version of 8.2. It works, but I have no GUI (Just a command line) and no WIFI connection. It seems the GUI didn't install and the WiFi card is not supported. I have found a driver for the wifi card but don't know how to install this driver. URL....

I tried to change card to Radeon HD 4350 but it didn't give more than terminal view, Xdm didn't start. I believed the driver would support both cards?

On my notebook there was a preinstalled OEM Windows 7 Home Basic (disk C, sda1). I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on disk D, and was not using Windows 7 any more, although the "seventh" was present n main loading menu and in grub menu. 2 days ago I discovered, that in grub menu appeared "Windows Vista (Loader) - sda1" ! I didn't install it, and I'm sure that nobody else had access to my notebook. "Windows 7 (Loader)" now links to sda2.
When I try to run this strange "Windows Vista (Loader)", appears the Windows loading screen, than the empty Windows desktop background, and than the system reboots. How can Windows Vista (Loader) appear in grub, if nobody installed it? Can it be an imitation of Vista loader, made by some malware? How to remove this item from grub?

There is something I don't quite understand in ubuntu and that is where do you install programs (something similar to the Program Files folder in Windows perhaps) and is there something similar to registry, because I installed JDK from a downloaded binary and when I installed Netbeans it didn't see the Java installation, and where exactly are the system files?

Wow -everything works with alpha-3 version with a fresh install. Sound, wireless modem, processor speed scaling, sound controls, touch pad, all cores running,power management, battery, fans, etc. NVidia driver is also working. I tried multiple other distro installs - opensuse, Fedora, and ubuntu 10.04 - none worked. Also tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which didn't work either. also tried upgrading to 2.6.35 kernel which didn't work either.
I'm running a toshiba satellite a505-6030 with an i7 core, nvidia graphics gforce 310M. i didn't have to pass any arguments to grub either . First boot seemed to stall, rebooted machine, and it's been working perfectly since.
