Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 2.6.35 Kernel Which Didn't Work Either?

Aug 26, 2010

Wow -everything works with alpha-3 version with a fresh install. Sound, wireless modem, processor speed scaling, sound controls, touch pad, all cores running, power management, battery, fans, etc. NVidia driver is also working. I tried multiple other distro installs - opensuse, Fedora, and ubuntu 10.04 - none worked. Also tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 which didn't work either. also tried upgrading to 2.6.35 kernel which didn't work either.

I'm running a toshiba satellite a505-6030 with an i7 core, nvidia graphics gforce 310M. i didn't have to pass any arguments to grub either . First boot seemed to stall, rebooted machine, and it's been working perfectly since.

While trying to Make the driver source I receive errors of missing libraries. Is the hostap driver included in the Centos Kernel? I tried with insmod hostap but it didn't work..? Is there a kernel patch with the hostap drivers? I will be glad if someone can give me ideas or directions for setting up the driver properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Kernel In A Karmic Persistent USB Installation

Jan 30, 2010

I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Kernel On A Live-cd?

Mar 15, 2010

I am building a live-cd using live-helper on Karmic (9.10). The process executes fine and I am able to build a live cd of ~200MB in size with minimal and xfce. But things does not work if I try to upgrade the kernel with the one of them from [URL] site. Ubuntu kernel team publishes the kernel for testing and I would like to upgrade the kernel for testing. But when I upgrade the kernel from inside the live-helper's interactive shell, it upgrades fine and iso gets created. While booting, it loads the kernel and errors out with the following message:

Code:
(initramfs) mount: mounting aufs on /root failed: No such device.
aufs mount failed.

I am running initramfs after installing the new kernel (a .deb file) using dpkg.

What else should I need to do for getting this to work?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To Kernel 2.6.28.2 In 10?

Jan 26, 2009

I've never compiled a kernel before and I'm in need of the 2.6.28 kernel (two words: macbook aluminium).

I guess my biggest question is, will this guide work well for F10? I would hate to get half-way through it just to find out that F10 does something different than F08 or F09. Is there anything that you experts can see right away that would possibly be disastrous? If things do come to worse, I can simply select the previous kernel at GRUB boot right?

Or will the Fedora team be releasing the update soon through the package manager? Is there a way I can activate the development version and only get the kernel update?

Debian Installation :: Upgrading With A Handmade Kernel?

Aug 11, 2010

I have a hand-built kernel in Lenny. It's much smaller and faster than the stock kernel and doesn't need an initrd, but I am not sure how to upgrade it in a way that will be compatible with the new udev package. The recommended procedure is to upgrade the kernel and udev together and then reboot before doing the rest of the upgrade, but obviously I can't do that.

There seem to be two possible procedures I could follow:

1) Upgrade kernel sources and rebuild and install the kernel, then reboot and upgrade udev. But then the new kernel would be booting with the old udev and I don't know if that would work.

2) Upgrade, rebuild and install the kernel, then upgrade udev without rebooting, ignoring the warning messages. Finally reboot into the new kernel.

At my last update, apparently some 2+ years ago, it was possible to run the system update first and once installed, let it check and download any corrections and changes. Does that not work anymore?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Default Kernel After Upgrading From 9.xx To 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Jul 21, 2010

after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Chose advanced istall

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu

I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted

I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

Boot Info:

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Driver And New Kernel 2.6.35 Kernel - No Longer Work

Nov 24, 2010

With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.

So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.

I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.

For this to work properly I have to type the password and then use the mouse to click the Authentication button. Why is this? Is there a way to solve this so I can just type in my password and click return like I do with everything else?

Ubuntu :: Graphics Card Didn't Work

Feb 11, 2011

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 3078-tx. It is was a great laptop when it was running windows 7 but when I tried installing Ubuntu, I slowly began to hate it more and more. The issue is with the ATI and Intel switchable graphics card. Ubuntu installs fine and things seem to be great but I cant use the better graphics effects in ubuntu. I installed the driver that ubuntu provides for ATI and it didnt work and ubuntu booted into a terminal etc.. and I had to put it back to the way it was before. After sometime researching on the internet I know the problem is with the swtichable graphics.

Unfortunatley there is no option to turn off switchable graphic in my bios and hp arent much of a help. I dont know what to do now ? Is there any way to get switchable graphics to w ork with linux, is there way to get version of the bios that lets me disable it ? any variations of ubuntu or linux that it works with. I would prefer to use the ATI if i have to disable one or the other cause Im usually running on ac power anyways.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Catalyst Didn't Work After The Upgrade To 10

Jun 12, 2010

Maybe saying Ubuntu is getting worse is unfair. I'm not a big user I have to say. I use it more out of curiosity than anything else. I first used 8 and it was brilliant. I told all my mates about it. Everything work great. I had all desktop effects. I could use a KDE session. Then I upgraded to 9 and lost KDE ability but still had all desktop effects available. Upgraded to 10 a few weeks ago and now no desktop effects. Non of the above is a problem but I feel like, for me, it's going backwards.

I use an old AMD 2600 machine with a Radeon 9600. I used to be able to use ATI Catalyst but that didn't work after the upgrade to 10 and I can't seem to find a solution. Ubuntu is still brilliant but I don't like things being taken away from me.
