The idea behind mounting it automatically to ~./Music was for the partition to be transparent to me...Is there a way to remove that icon from the desktop and from the Places menu?

At the moment it shows Windows XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode & like 2 more.. which are also Ubuntu & recovery mode. I've never selected the other Ubuntu ones, only the first one. So, how can I remove the ones I don't want to show on the list.

I installed my system on one partition, then I added another with free space. Now I want to format the second partition, but the kernel doesn't know about it yet. I tried sfdisk -R /dev/sda, but it refuses while the root partition is mounted. Is there anyway I can avoid rebooting?

- first drive is the system
- I mounted the 2nd drive (ext3) on a folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go

This is probably me looking but not seeing an option somewhere. I re-installed 10.10 over 10.04 by formatting the root partition but keeping the home partition the same, to save me a lot of work. (64 bit) However, now when I mount a CD, DVD or USB stick, they don't appear in Dophin's "Places" window. What have I missed please?

Is there a way to do both at the same time? Ideally what I'd like to see is the output of fdisk -l but with an additional column that shows if a partition is mounted or not.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.

The same goes for 11.04, but... all the drives/partitions are also shown in the launcher.Because it gets a bit crowded on the left side, I want to get rid of those drive-icons.I can only open them, not remove them from the launcher, except my external drive (safely remove), but than it also disappears from Nautilus Is there any (easy) way to remove those drives?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen booting opensuse 11.2 or 11.3 there is automatically created a folder in /media to mount my external usb drive (in /media/disk). The problem I have is that sometimes these folders are not automatically removed when I shut down. On the next time boot this device is mounted at /media/disk-1 or /media/disk-2 which throws off for instance Krusader or Amarok. Also the folders that are not removed seem to have really strong permissions such that I can't even browse into them in Krusader or Dolphin. I have to manually clean the /media folder as super user so that when I reboot, they are in /media/disk. Does anyone know how to ensure that opensuse removes the folder(s) upon shutdown?
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I powered-up my computer today I received the message that the home partition listed in /etc/fstab cannot be mounted and to press ESC to go to the recovery shell.
My computer is dual-boot, with Windows on the first hard disk (sda) and Ubuntu 9.10 on the second hard disk (sdb); I am using Grub version 1.97 beta4. The home partition is thus on sdb2 and the file system is ext4.
The /etc/fstab file contains all the partitions and has not changed since last October. Also, when issuing the command fdisk l, all partitions are correctly displayed, including the home that cannot be mounted.
Finally, the command fsck /dev/sdb2 quickly returns the result that /dev/sdb2 is clean!
I am trying to actually wipe my entire hard drive and figured it may just be easiest to format the hard drive and deleting the partitions. So when I go to System => Administration => Disk Utility => Select the Hard Drive => Click Delete Partition => And I get the error shown in my screenshots. What would be my best way to delete this partition and remove ubuntu completely for the time being. And yes I am using the latest RC. 10.04. However I don't suspect this is a bug.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have both Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP installed on my PC. I want to remove the Ubuntu partition and leave the Windows partition. The question that I have is that when I remove it, Grub will go with it. Will that mess up my Windows partition?
What I need to do is remove Ubuntu and add the hdd space back to the other partition. I just don't want Grub's absence to keep me from being able to load Windows.
I had my hard disk partitioned as below:-
Size Label Mount point File system
52 GB Multimedia /MM ntfs
52 GB Backup /ABackup ntfs
52 GB Extras /Extras ext4
27 GB root / ext4
60 GB home /home ext4
The problem is that I cannot access the /MM and contents. I tried Properties > Permissions and changed applied the changes to subfolders and contents too. Now I can access /MM but not the contents. All are marked with a lock logo.There are numerous folders/files.Changing the permissions individually is a hectic work.possible to do it in a command line/script?
I'm totally new with linux and Ubuntu. I've just installed 10.10 yesterday and since then it's been an uphill struggle These forums has helped me out quite a bit already so I hope you can continue doing it with this problem I have.I got a single drive where the bootpartition is ext4 and the other "storage" partition is a remenant from a windows 7 installation I had, with NTFS. Decided I wanted to give Ubuntu a try! Now i've run into permission trouble though, mainly because I wanted to set up an FTP server (oh what a struggle THAT's been, I have some stories... ). I've done a "mount --bind" so that I can reach different resources directly from my chroot. It turns out though that the mounted partition isn't giving anyone except the owner (me) permission to see the resources. FTPing into the server gives the mount points but gives a 550 error and can't list anything inside of them.It works perfectly for me just running it at the prompt or using the mount points directly in the Ubuntu GUI though (since I'm the owner/admin/whatever).
My intended solution that I've found was that people with NTFS drives did a few magic tricks with the line of text in Fstab so they could access their NTFS drives. Problem for me is that my sda3 mount isn't showing up at all in fstab, even though fstab is supposed to (as far as I know) show all mounted devices on there. All the while, I have my sda3 totally accessible from /media/Storage/. Any pointers as to why this is?After I installed Ubuntu, I just mounted the sda3 with the Disk Utility from System->Administation and didn't think much of it afterwards until now.What's the best course of action here? remount the ntfs partiton using fstab? Convert the ntfs partition into an ext4? I have a lot of data on there I want to keep as well.

I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
I have installed Xubuntu on an old laptop which has a floppy disk.
On the desktop where mounted drives will normally appear, it constantly shows the floppy disk on the desktop even though there is not floppy inside, so I have disabled the desktop from showing mounted drives, however now anything else like a CD or USB drive will not show up on the desktop. Is there a way to choose what types of devices are shown on the desktop?
I have considered disabling the floppy from the BIOS(assuming that is possible), but I would rather not go down that road just yet.
For some strange reason, my media mounted in /media is not showing on my desktop on Lucid (10.04).I've been through gconf-editor to make sure the box is checked to show the mounted media in Nautilus. I also checked the options to show my Home folder and Computer icons on the desktop, but these do not show either.Tried ubuntu-tweaks to see if it would work, but no go there either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two external hard drives mounted to my computer. They both work and are accessible. The one shows up on my desktop when it is mounted just fine. The other one does not. I went in to Configuration editor-apps-nautilus-desktop and checked the volumes_visible. That makes the other one not visible/visible but not the one I am having problems with. I read somewhere that devices must be named for it to show up and both devices are named, I even changed the name and that didn't do anything. Again, this device shows up in my computer but not on my desktop like all my other devices do. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get this external hard drive to show up.

For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? I have a symbolic link to that mounted partition, and when I click on it, I can see the first level of folders, but I can't execute them (even though they seem to be set to 777) and I can't open anything...
I have a really odd problem when I mount a partition with Nautilus is attributed to another user, I don't know why. I've tried by adding the following like in /etc/fstab
/dev/sda2 /media/windoze ext3 user,noauto,rw 0 0
Then I can mount the partition but in this case it is attributed to the root and I don't have the permission to read it. I cannot understand why since I've given the 'user' option.
I am trying to copy my /home directory to a separate partition. I have seen a lot of info on this on the internet. Most of the information uses cpio to copy the files. The destination partition has been successfukky mounter.

Then, I started to wipe the entire hard drive with random characters using dd. Only later I realized that I hadn't unmounted that partition. what could have happened? When I ran the disk analyzer, it showed that most of the space is going towards the videos folder in /media/win7. My ~/Videos folder is symbolically linked to the videos folder on my Windows partition, which is mounted in my fstab using ntfs-3g under /media/win7. The question now is, shouldn't the videos only exist in the windows partition? /media/win7 usage shouldn't affect space usage in my root folder right?
