Ubuntu Installation :: Online Update To 10.04 - Loss Of Windows Boot?

Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.
Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.
Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).
I used to have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 RC on separate partitions and I could choose to boot into either. Today I installed Windows 7 Enterprise trial version over the Windows 7 RC partition, and lost the boot screen. Reboot goes to Windows automatically. How can I get the boot options back to launch Ubuntu?
I loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?
I've installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer (well actually Ive done it twice, once with full DVD image and once with network install). Everything was OK until Ive made update (yast/software/online update <-- BTW kupdate applet isn't working, just update bar appear and stuck on 0%). i haven't installed any additional packages, only the defaults (KDE desktop). after update only fail safe option is working (booting normally and looks like normal desktop, no visual differences between normal and fail safe booting, if there should been any). When I've tried to find solution for this problem, very ofter answers were -> graphic drivers problem (im using ati hd 4670 AGP <-- yea, AGP . well when i start normal boot green screen with lizard logo appear, then screen goes black for a second or two, then the green screen come again, and after another few second screen goes black permanently with working hdd for 30-40 second (hdd led blinking) BTW i have windows7 pro (booting fine) on this machine too, it was installed as first system on hd0,0. opensuse was installed on stand alone PATA disk (secondary EIDE master, ODD on slave). how to gather info which u all need to get this problem more detailed. I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:
A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.
W:Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dis...kports/Release Unable to find expected entry main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.
I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.
Cant boot windows or ubuntu Well i have two hard drives, i used wubi on windows (which is on my c: drive) to put ubuntu 10.10 on my d: drive. Everything was running smoothly until the update manager uptated ubuntu. When the installation was completed, i was told to restart. So i did. When it restarted, nothing happened. My computer froze and i cant access windows or ubuntu, and i cant change anything.
With a bit of help from this forum I managed to install 10.04. The solution was to add i915.modeset=1 to the options when booting up from CD.Now I need to do the same in order to boot up from HD. I've opened /etc/default/grub and changed the relevant line to include the above option. But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. What can I do?
When I access [URL] and I can't see tv online like windows. I would like to install "GOALBIT" so that I can watch this channel online. I was reffered to this site [URL] to install goal bit. It says that its a free software and you can use it with GNU/LINUX. If someone knows how to install this software I'm using ubuntu the latest desktop version on my laptop.
I was really enjoying the speediness of 9.10 on my HP Pavilion ze4900. Once I got the wireless driver loaded correctly, anyway. Tried to do an on-line upgrade to 10.04, but figured I should have had a hard-wired internet connection when I got installation messages that "Could not set up..." the network. But, installation continued without any other apparent issues. As soon as it rebooted at the end, the problem started. It hangs right after the ubuntu logo, with a completely blank screen.
My questions: 1) Can I get this to start booting properly? 2) If not, what would be the best way to retrieve my evolution mail files, so I can do a clean install? If I boot from a CD, will I be able to retrieve those files and maybe put them on a memory stick?

I just installed 9.10 Karmic Koala and everything was kosher. I installed Amarok and the libxine plugins etc and was getting sound and able to play my mp3s, I let the update manager run and voila now without any sound. Machine is a gateway desktop using Realtek High Definition Audio.
Not sure this right place for this. After updating from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 lost internet connection - was instantaneous loss. Wired connection computer to router. Icon on computer shows "wired connection 'auto Eth0'active" The router shows line connected ok. Computer shows connection is established. Connection information menu shows details such as IP address broadcast address and other details. Where do I go from here to reconnect to internet.
I have a Hardy which last night asked for updates that included kernel changes. Today I find I no longer can connect using WIFI and have no sound. The GUIs are just not there and it's as if the controllers themselves have disappeared. For example lshw -C network reveals a Cisco Airon Wireless, but it's not listed as a wireless device, just as network controller.Can anyone advice me on how to approach this? Is it possible to revert changes or something?

Partition 1: Windows 7 - NTFS Partition 2: Ubuntu 10.10 - Ext4 Partition 3: Data - NTFS Partition 4: Windows Recovery - meh...
Basically, I have it so that I have one large NTFS partition (Data) for sharing files between Ubuntu and Windows. It works very well. I keep all my Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos on "Data" and then sym-link those folders to my home folder on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I'm afraid to bootup Windows. Sometimes when I boot Windows, files that I made or edited in Ubuntu get lost, unindexed or corrupt. It happens very frequently with image files (.jpeg, .png, etc.) but also happens with PDFs and folders. This means that not only do these files become unusable, but I also can't delete them. Even using $ rm -rf my_file returns a "Cannot delete my_file. It is not a file or directory."
The only way to get rid of these files is to perform a CHKDSK on Data when I boot Windows. CHKDSK always finds a shed-load of files that have gone haywire. I'm usually greeted by an seemingly indefinite list of "Removing index entry xyz from $afxyz" and other scary looking actions being taken out on my files.I keep backups of my files on an external HDD and a remote server, but it's no use when I'm backing up corrupt files.
Last time I installed Ubuntu in a dualboot configuration with Win7 on one of my machines, my entire boot sector and Windows install got corrupted, resulting in a complete loss of all my data and requiring a fresh install of Windows.
I looked into this a bit after the fact, and it seemed to me it was due to conflicting hard disk geometry between Linux and Windows.
My question is, how likely is this to happen with Fedora? Is this because of Ubuntu? A bad install? Is there someway I can avoid this from happening when I install Fedora if it will happen?
I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I'm running Opensuse 3 on an EEE PC, and so far had no problems. I brought it to another house today and now Firefox seems to be unable to connect to the network.. Network is working however, as Skype is running fine. Online update won't work either.
On my work computer I installed Opensuse11.2 in VirtualBox. However online update or installs which are downloaded through YAST2 are not working. I get the message "Failed to download media ....." and that's it. I configured the proxy and when using the test proxy button it tells me that the proxy works OK. If I copy the link from yast into Firefox I get to the site of the repositories without problems only Yast cannot connect. Neither from the GUI nor from the console. I had no problems with Opensuse11.0 and previous versions. WHat is the problem?
I performed the online update which included a kernel upgrade. After restart I no longer get a working display. Otherwise appears to boot, as I can see the drive from my laptop via samba. I cannot get a display in either normal boot nor in failsafe. I am also not able to get a terminal screen.Grub boot includes VGA=0x31aAre there any other boot options I can enter to at least get to a terminal?
I was using tripleboot system in one hard drive. That included Windows 7,Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04. And yesterday I decided to added openSUSE 11.3 at another partition. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 grub2 as bootloader.
At first there was no problem. All OS detected well, but after opeSUSE online updates last night my openSUSE partition won't boot. First, at boot I chose openSUSE and it said "Boot kernel first" and nothing happens. And then I boot to ubuntu and ran update-grub then I saw grub no longer detected openSUSE partition.
Since applying a number of updates using the online update tool in Yast, the online update tool can no longer contact the software repositories which were configured in Yast.If i browse to the URL which is configured within the software repo config tool, I can see the updates & folders fine in Firefox.Zypper seems to do the same thing & just sits there if I do zypper update.I see a number of other people in this forum have had the same problems, any ideas as I couldn?t find a resolution?
I'm running 10.3, KDE, 32bit. I am working with a fresh install. The updater stated that I had updates , I accepted the updates. At this point the updater failed in some way. It did not become a zombi but stalled. I quit the updater. Now when I try and get online updates using the sys tray updater it sais none available. When I use yast online update it has some recommended updates but does not install them. I rebuilt the rpm data base and this did not help.
How can I "reset" the updater. I believe that it thinks that it did go thru the updates and therefor cant see that they still need attention.
Yast online update is installed, but no repositories were configured. On previous installations, they were. Is this a known problem, and how can I pull in the full list?
I know I should be able to do an online update using cl zypper but would much prefer to use Yast's sw manager as it's easier to review and respond to package issues that always arise (because of packages made by me or dl'ed from obs but from repos not enabled in the repo manager)currently running 11.2
Not sure this is the right place and I feel really stupid for asking this but, I want to change the frequency of the online update checks but, for the life of me, cannot find out how. During install, I can configure it but I now want something different. I thought that there was a topic with yast under software but no. Only "online update" which basically give me manual update. I click on configure but same screen appears.
in the last few days, Kpackagekit, which I use to update my system (openSUSE 11.4) had some difficulties to
1. install updates for flashplugin, because whenever you accept the license, Kpackagekit closes, and starts from beginning = a never ending cycle is started
2. fetch updates from Packman. It always throws a message with connection timeout - in Zypper and YaST no such problem occurs
Thats why I have fiddled around in YaST online update and found a feature "automatic online update". For that you need an extra package yast-online-update-configuration. I installed it and configured it to do automatic Updates.
So now I have a question on how it works. Because I have some additional repos activated: KDE updated Apps, KDE extra and the KDE release 4.6 repo, which brings the most recent KDE updates for KDE 4.6.
These repos have priority 90 whereas all the other repos - Packman, OSS, Non-OSS, Contrib etc. have prio 99.
Will YaST install all the updates from KDE with this setup? I am asking, because when I did online updates in Yast before, with prio 99 for the KDE repos, it did not update them, unless I choosed, "Packages --> update all, if newer version is available". I would like to set Kpackagekit into silent and just stick with YaST for that, but have an automatic system update.
